Chris Gunter, wasted potential?

This aritcle from a Spurs site mentions Gunter as not fulfilling his potential. Seems a bit premature with him only being 20!

Gareth Bale looked like a cracking prospect... before he moved to Spurs. So did Alan Hutton.

Maybe it's Spurs... I can't say they've ever improved any of the talented youngsters they've purchased, including the likes of Bentley, Dawson, Jenas and Huddlestone.

Indeed. However, I think Spurs fans need to have a bit of a reality check here. In truth, sides like Spurs create such pressure on their manager to find instant success, that players like Gunter become a risk for said manager. There is no longer the patience to build a side and wait for players like Gunter to grow into their roles - this is particulalry true of defenders, where consistancy (which comes with experience) is so important to their managers ability to keep his job, that talented youngsters are routinely passed over for expensive foreigners with match experience. It's also true, that these youngsters will never fulfil their potential by rotting in the reserves...so for what it's worth, I reckon Gunter has done the right thing, moving to get first team football.

Youth Team
Spurs end up buying just about every exciting British youth player in the country for vast sums of money. They then play in their reserves team for three years or, if they're really lucky, make the bench. At the end of this 'nurturing' process they either sell them to a Championship side or West Ham.

I've never really understood this "good old Spurs, here's hoping they break the top four" attitude. They spend more than some of the 'big' clubs and proceed in wrecking a lot of British youth's careers. Luverly.

Add Bostock to the list, made a huge meal signing him from Palace and i'm not sure he has even played yet..

The reason said players allegedly aren't filling their potential is because teams like Spurs buy them and essentially let them play for the reserves for a season or two before eventually getting rid of them.

Players like Bale would have been better off staying at Southampton for at least another season, first team football goes a long way.

cor blimey hes only 17..hes played in friendlys and in the uefa cup. And it was Palace who made a big deal, spurs offered more money to palace in the first place, it was palace who were being greedy.

Thy wind me up how they seem to have no idea how to handle youth progression. If any youngster is offered a quick move to the premiership then Spurs should be used as an example why not. Dawson is a shadow of his former self. It's as if they get bored of them after a few weeks before even giving them a real chance.

I seriously believe they had the chance to mould some of these younguns into top class players, but blow it by not pushing then or giving them the opportunity !

Spurs is the graveyard for British talent. They can't accept mid table mediocrity which is what they are and still assume themselves a top 4 club. For the sake of British football I hope they continue to sign the Modric's and Pavlychenkos of this world

I like to think that it is only a matter of time before they "do a Leeds" and implode. Unfortunately I think being a London club there will always be a line of lunatics ready to throw their money into the pit.

They considered it as a wasted potential from their end , because they never made it at tottenham.

It's the same when any young players we have did not make it into the first team , of course , for spurs fans , they called it "wasted potential" , generally for our fans , they would called it "crap". Any players that did not do well or never got a chance at forest generally get labelled as crap. McPhail - crap , Chopra - crap etc.

I don't think Gunter is a wasted talent, he has good ability to be at a club in the Premier league. Not sure on how Spurs can say that about Gunter, when he barely got played. Also Bale, I rate him highly, think he's a cracking player.
Another person to the list of Spurs players of young english talent what haven't improved much is Aaron Lennon.
For many years we've seen that Lennon can't cross very well, but yet he still can't cross! and he can be a quality player if he worked on his end product.

Maybe It is Spurs afterall :D

Lennon is a good example. If he'd gone to Man Utd or Arsenal, he'd have improved loads.

Absolutely correct - you only have to look at how much Theo Walcott has improved since he went to Arsenal.

Realistically, Spurs are so far behind the "big four" they can't afford to by young players and coach them like maybe Arsenal can do, they have to buy players, throw them in at the deep end and panic when it doesn't work.

Spurs - as pointed out - are a graveyeard club for young players nowadays.

Chris Gunter hasn't even begun to reach his potential - anyone who saw him playing for Cardiff could tell you that.

I honestly thought when Dawson went to Spurs in 2005 i thought if he can play the same he did in 2003 he could of joined the Big 4 once he has got a decent education of Premiership football at Spurs,But at 25 going on 26 in November Dawson has not progressed the way i would like him to.

Aha! I spotted the tremendous flaw in an otherwise good post!

Still...At least Spurs appear to have found the replacement for Darren Anderton that they've been after for so long....
