Cant believe he only scored 13 goals, i thought he'd got loads more than that. Hes got a mint left peg and never misses in the Masters!

I remember his goal away at Bayern Munich though. A great player in his day, 100% forest

Yup. Used to do it from the old Geoffrey's newsagent in old Nuthall. Never failed to give me 20 quid at xmas (a load back then compared to Geoffrey's measley £1.20 per round) tight bastards !

I used to deliver Kenny Burns' paper when he was a Forest player (I'm obviously a bit older than you!) and the tight bastard didn't give me a Christmas tip at all.

I've held that against him to this day. :(

It's quite depressing that our last captain in the Premiership looks about 50, happy days :(

What a momeny that was ;D They were still playing the music to celebrate the Bayern goal when Chettle headed in.

The terrace there was great for celebrating. I was running up an down the aisles hugging everyone in sight.

I would have Chettle now at 40....As im only 16 he was one of my first forest heros....A great leader, steel eye look, and could take a penelty.

Steve Chettle was the first Forest player I ever met. When I was at primary school we played in some football tournament each team had their picture taken with him. I must try and find that picture.

John Robertson
I was at school with him, he was the year below and a genuinely top bloke even then, there were other kids at the school who on the face of it were better than him and had trials and signed schoolboy forms with other clubs but none of them made it.

When he was still an apprentice he still took the bus back home sometimes (no 17 from Trinity square) and he'd still have a good old chat, never got above himself... mind you never forgive him for provoking John Barnes with his "I'll have Barnes on toast" headline before the FA cup semi-final at Hillsbrough (1990 not '89). That just seemed to make them mad that day...

.....And his short back passes to Beasant that never made it and cost us a goal

Met him at the Grass Roots football exhibition a couple of weeks ago, what a really nice guy he is.

Also sat next to his Mum and Dad at Halifax in the FA cupmany moons ago, equally as nice.

His parents kept him grounded

To be fair from age of about 11 he stood out

I know the Junior Forest Academy team he played in very well

Hansen was the top centre back in senior football at the time and Chettle as a Junior played the game like him at that level

Never hurried and always composed (thats at junior Level) not so easy to do that at senior level where he was just a solid reliable centre half but nothing like as classy as when he was a Junior

Poster above is right the two "stars" in same Forest Junior team in those days Chris Reid and Mark Harbottle never delivered as they got older

Mark Harbottle (who has a footballing brother Dave) ended up at Notts but got thrown out due to his behaviour

Phil Starbuck came through from that same academy team as well

Chettele made a big mistake in first FA Cup semi final v Liverpool by being quoted in the papers as saying "I will have Barnes on toast"

John Barnes and co duly turned Chettle and us over without hardly breaking sweat

Knowing Steve I am convinced he would have been misquoted

I heard at the time, in Forest tradition, he was giving nothing away and certainly nothing controversial................When asked what he was having for breakfast, he was a little bemused by the question, when it was repeated, the reply was along the line of beans on toast.....................which with artistic licence was turned to barnes on toast by the Sun, so an inexperienced youngster was done up like a kitten.
