Probably shouldn't have named this thread after a serial killer and it might have drummed up more interest. That said and I'm no expert but surely a thread about a killer you would think some of you would comment on it what with you all annoucing where you are of a Saturday afternoon and not wanting to annoy the author lol
 
On a scale of one to Shipman - Manson is my 4th favourite serial killer. Just behind "The Iceman"
 
Herpes, syphillis, gonnorhoea, AIDS, getting knocked over by a bus and being shot, stabbed or burgled are all more popular in Nottingham than David Platt.

Serial killing?

Name one person Manson ever killed, go on... he was convicted of conspiracy under a joint liability rule that existed in the state he was based in. The Tate/LaBianca murders were all done at once, by a number of people, though Manson was not there. So even the killings Manson didn't do weren't serial or even mass in criminal classification, though they were multiple. Manson shot a dealer named Crowe once and believed he had killed him (Crowe had threatened to off Manson's 'family' over a drug debt or such) but the chap was only wounded.

Lovely how easily the media makes lazy people believe any old shit though, isn't it? A fact best remembered when reading Forest stories in the press and online.

How many people did Churchill kill? I think we can draw a line between a commander in chief of a huge armed force and a bloke whose spurious claptrap incited a handful of nutters to go on a rampage. My point was that there's a huge discrepancy in the how and why of a serial killer and a cult leader, there's a profound difference in why Manson is an interesting character and why Gein, Brady, Sutcliffe or Shipman might be. Manson has more in common with Derek Bentley, who as an aside has received a full posthumous pardon from Her Majesties' Pleasure of the High Court. In the case of both of these people, insufficient intervention by state authorities in the lives of these two individuals who had fairly ruinous upbringings could be argued as being as directly to blame for their incitements as they were for the actions perpetrated by their incitees.

Ultimately comparing Manson to serial killers is like comparing Pride Park to the City Ground. It's fallacious and unhelpful.

Manson looked better in shades. I guess the Family were a murder cult while the Branch Davidians were a suicide cult, or a murdered cult, depending on your feelings towards the DEA. If your daughter brought wither of them home for tea you'd be a bit worried, though.
