"We are seeing a lot of them gaining international recognition at junior levels and we are battering teams, including Premiership academy sides".

It will be interesting to see if Billy is going to bring anyone from the youth setup through to the first team any time soon; although it mentions the next couple of seasons, this is a reason to be optimistic for the future.
 
Did wes morgan come through the academy? I remember on the buses, there used to be adverts for south notts college, using wes as thier example.

I hope doughtys right about these academy players. Ever since hes been here hes talked of this bright future built around academy talent - that has yet to happen. Since the paul hart era, only mcgugans actually come through and achieved anything.

Hopefully this new batch will be really good and actually make the grade :)
 
I have a feeling we signed him from Dunkirk when he was 16 or so. He was on Notts' book as a youngster though, but they released him when he was 15.

I like how Nige, professional in every respect, uses the phrase "battering teams."
 
Another interview with mr doughty; what is going on with the world?! Thats a few interviews in the space of a couple of months. Is this interview a sign that we shall be relying on youth and not spending or am i reading too much into this.
 
We are long overdue some exciting talent from the academy; since McGugan made the step up in early 2007 there has been no-one since; the likes of Thornhill, Heath, Moloney and Newbold were all massively out of their depths.

I've often wondered whether the academy is worth what NFFC put into it each year as it has produced nothing good in the last few years; hopefully ND is right on this one.

However the sceptic in me thinks he could just be getting his excuses for not backing his managers again in early.
 
There's Karlton watson and Jamaal Lescelles who are centre backs. Hopefully one of them will be ready to step in and replace Kelvin Wilson if he dosn't sign a new contract.

The lads who are coming through now would have joined the club at the time when we were churning out high quality players like Jenas, Reid and Dawson. Our academy had an excellent reputation then so hopefully we secured some high quality players.

Nialle Rodney is supposed to be a good striker and Kieron Freeman a good left back.

It's probably from the same interview. They are just using it for a few different stories and spreading it out.
 
He's preparing us for no signings in January already!

ND said the academy side from the last two seasons had the best crop of young players we've seen in recent times ...... only to release the majority of those future stars!!
 
dont believe a word Nige says anymore if Im honest. More doing and less talking needs to be done before he can regain my trust. Until then its in one ear and out the other
 
Well that means hey we have not signed anyone but dont worry the "children are our future Teach them well and let them lead the way" so we dont need nobody.

This could also mean, yes we have lots of players out of contract (including McGugan) at end of the season, so dont worry if they leave as the crop of young guns coming through are that good they can replace them and push us on!!


But got to say re his latest timed interview, that didn’t we hear this just a couple of years back with regards to a batch of exciting youngsters coming through?

The likes of Joe Heath, Arron Mitchell, Adam Newbold, Mark Byrne, James Reid, Emile Sinclair, Hamza Bencherif, Richard Tait, Shane Redmond, Paddy Gamble, Dale Roberts, Brendan Molony have all been part of the first team squad after coming up from the academy, all named as exciting next big thing talent to justify their selection. Some even started.......yet where are they now??

Only Molony remains - probably the best of the bunch and he can’t get a game. Calderdud then Billy gave opportunities to some of those players (Billy had to in his first season) so they had their chance....but were ultimately proved to be not good enough

Many thought Tim Hopkinson would be a fine striker, Calderwood liked him now he is playing in the College system in the USA.

McGugan has taken time and patience and for the last month or so we have been reaping the rewards- but ND didn’t name any players names, I don’t really think he is the best judge of a player in the first place when it comes to football matters....

It would been alright if he had made them comments after we had brought some players in, you know building now as well as promising future but he didn’t and I think he needs to live in the here and now!

Guess we will have to see in a few years or so to see if his claim comes true, that they are the new Jenas, Reid and Dawson etc -(which as history shows us says he will sell them as soon as they establish themselves in the team anyway) or will they be like the last bunch of promising players then bragged about?

I don't think the batch you mention was ever particularly well regarded. Players like Moloney, Gamble and Reid were highly though at one point of but a lot of them were just fodder.

I don't think this is a case of Doughty idly 'bragging' either, Nick Marhsall's said quite a few times recently that some of the players we have now are very promising. I wouldn't want them to start naming names, either. Talk about putting pressure on a kid.

Considering we'll have made near on £20m through sales alone from academy grads in the last 5/6 years then yes, I'd say his invesment in the academy is viable. Shame the rest of the club hasn't been as succesful.

I think it's also unrealistic to expect any club to keep on churning out talent like that year on year. Even the top clubs whose academy budgest probably surpasses our whole club budget don't do that. Having spent 3 years in L1 and the cost cutting that went with it would have harmed our ability to attract and retain the top young kids as well.
 
Perhaps they should though go further with this if they really are excited by the next generation of young players...why not run a feature giving us names and profiles of the breakthrough stars to look out for.... Call it the "Future Forest Young Guns" Initiative, and push it heavily the OS and in the Programme

Go the whole hog, get us excited, don’t be ambiguous, give us names to look out for, push them into the spotlight, give us more info on them away on the OS (not hidden away on it)... let the fans get behind them. Create interest and getting us to go to the Youth and reserve teams to watch their progress-

Get fans to vote for the next star?

Hopefully this will get the Academy players competitive and eager to get on themselves into the "Future Forest Young Guns" Initiative. And for the ones who don’t make it...prove them wrong and push your case by playing well (hopefully in front of more fans)

IMO they should be thinking of ways to keep pushing the Forest product and get the fans interested and caring about now and the future of the club, no half hearted predications that we have all heard before.

I can see where your coming from

Firstly about me being cynical :p ...... And secondly the pressure on the players

But let’s be honest the kids that are going to go on to success obviously need to be good but mentally strong enough to make it too!

No ones mentioned James Perch - £1.5m will more than pay for the academy this year.
 
I was thinking about this earlier so decided to check the academies results;

Played 9 - won 4, lost 5.

August
Sat 21 Cardiff City A W 4-2
Sat 28 Portsmouth H W 3-2

September
Sat 04 Manchester City A L 0-1
Sat 11 Wolves H L 3-5
Sat 18 Everton A L 1-2
Sat 25 Derby H L 1-2

October
Sat 02 Middlesbrough A L 0-1
Sat 09 Leeds United H W 4-0
Sat 16 Barnsley H W 1-0

Now this doesnt seem to tally with ND saying "we are battering teams, including Premiership academy sides", seeing as the Forest team lost to each of the Premiership sides academies. Perhaps NDs wording is a little deceiving as he may be classing any of the other sides in the leage as a 'Premiership academy side' due to the leagues name. Either way there has only been one battering of the opposition in all of those 9 games.

He couldnt be refering to the side of last season as several of the players have been moved on. Mitchell, Reid and Heath went in January whilst, amongst others, Hopkinson and Thomson were released at the end of the season. From what I'd read these two were a major facto in the academys success last season.

Makes me wonder ND has made these comments in the first place as, even if the players were decent, Billy is unlikely to give them a shot as he only wants to bring in experience

I think the results you've listed are for the U18s - maybe it's at some other level ?
 
Yes, it's at a younger level. I don't think too much is expected of this current U18 group, even last years team which came runners up to Arsenal wasn't expected to do much.

As I said earlier, the talk about a promising group of young kids isn't idle chat from the Chairman. The academy have been optimistic about them for a while.

Of those players, only Thomson was a regular in last years academy sides, the others were too old.

So ND is preparing us for several transfer windows with no signings before this golden generation break through in 4 or 5 years time
