Youd imagine we have irons in the fire which might have been reliant on Turner moving on. Expect we'll see something soon...
A couple years ago we came pretty close, with only Turner and Horvath available for the first game, and of those Turner only arrived a couple days beforehand.Obviously we can’t start the season with only one senior goalkeeper.
I wouldn't call either of those two keepers though. That's true, he asked for a new keeper only a month after joining, and we already had 2 of them.
Apparently lost faith in Jota too (which I agree with). Definitely has a ruthless streak does Nuno, it seems.Nuno seems to have an incredibly low tolerance for shite keepers, which isn't too surprising considering his expertise at the position. Miguel has almost been a Muric-esque disaster waiting to happen whenever he's played so it's not really a shock.
He won't have gotten as far as he has without knowing exactly what he wants.Apparently lost faith in Jota too (which I agree with). Definitely has a ruthless streak does Nuno, it seems.
Same, Jota was incredibly frustrating to watch and I'm sure Nuno was even more frustrated with him being our main attacking sub. He'll know exactly what is needed to get us competing again next season. He won't have gotten as far as he has without knowing exactly what he wants.
With Miguel that cup game/injury ended any hopes of a future it seems, with Jota I suspect he was too niggly - too many cheap free kicks conceded for me.
In Jotas defense his numbers weren't bad, but that's kind of offset by asking your back line to have to defend multiple free kicks because you've clattered into someone again after making a mistake...Same, Jota was incredibly frustrating to watch and I'm sure Nuno was even more frustrated with him being our main attacking sub. Isn't that typical of nearly all Goalkeepers though? Ask any fan what they think of their team's 'keeper and you'll usually get a response at one end of the scale or the other - you rarely get an 'He's Ok, I suppose' or a 'Meh, Average'.Our keepers over the past 4 years have been brilliant or abysmal. Nothing in between.
I agree but oddly many would have said that about Sels this time last year.Isn't that typical of nearly all Goalkeepers though? I don’t believe keepers decline like that. The best can keep going (pardon the pun) til late 30’s easily.Sels is 33 as well and so may start a natural decline soon. It shouldn't take much to convince an up and coming keeper to play Europe for a season this year and then be in a position to take Sels #1 shirt within the next 24 months.
Think finding a decent backup keeper will be our easiest job of the summer.
No he's crapKarl Darlow?
No thanks.Karl Darlow?
You may have heard the name Nikopolidis. Our NT's goalkeeper when we won the Euros, and one of my favourite-ever Greek players. During that Euro 2004 summer, he made the huge jump from Panathinaikos to Oly, being 33+ years old,, essentially starting a new career in Piraeus. Got to his peak level after 35 and up until he was 38, and retired at 40+. One of his best-ever games was vs Arsenal in the CL, where Oly lost 2-0 but he prevented an absolute battering, aged close to 39. OK, the physical demands of the PL are very different from those of the Greek league, but my point is, keepers who take good care of themselves and are lucky not to get major injuries can go on until their late 30s without a big drop-off.I don’t believe keepers decline like that. Nuno must’ve just watched the Exeter reply then. That was the match I threw the towel in with both of them. Miguel’s inability to catch a ball and Jota’s inability to stay on his feet. I was embarrassed for themApparently lost faith in Jota too (which I agree with). Definitely has a ruthless streak does Nuno, it seems.
We all saw Keylor Navas too - what was he, 37?You may have heard the name Nikopolidis. Our NT's goalkeeper when we won the Euros, and one of my favourite-ever Greek players.
