Brian Laws commentary

She bloody well is wrong!
Splitting an infinity like that.
These journalists have the English language as their primary tool of work.
They should at least know how to use it.
I know this was only in jest, Cap’n, and I’ll leave it to those with recent experience in the world of journalism to say what the current recommendations are regarding the use or otherwise of the split infinitive, but my understanding is that the idea that splitting an infinitive is wrong or ungrammatical is only based on that being the case in Latin. And on that basis I will happily split them and encourage others happily to split them too if they wish.

Caveat - I have never learned Latin (see what I did there?)

Quod erat demonstrandum.

Well, at my Grammar school, my English teacher would beat your hands with a ruler in time to you repeating "I must not split an infinitive".
However, I recognise times change and fashions change.
I wrote a chapter fot inclusion in the Local Village Plan a couple of years, and the editor and I nearly came to plows when she (had to be a woman!!) replaced all my proper noun first letter capitalisations with lower case letters.
We luagh about it now, but at the time I told her to boldly go elsewhere!

Ah now, I’m with you on proper noun capitalisations…

Shame there was no spellchecker back in those days…

We're biased, but think the consensus is Steve Hodge is better than most pundits/co-comms in the national media. Always seek out his view after matches as it's genuinely insightful.

Brian Laws is kind of like a favourite uncle. One of my heroes from my favourite team so definitely some nostalgia involved in my view. He loses it for goals like Hodge does. In a sport where players sign for the highest bidder and loyalty is no longer expected, I love hearing the players who got me into Forest in the first place can still get that excited by a goal we've scored thirty years after they retired. It was a little sad when Sutton called it a day and teared up on the radio. And I'll be sad when these two stop doing it.

Also, think David Jackson is around the same age as me. And you can tell he's living his dream working with his childhood heroes following Forest in the PL and now around Europe. I do enjoy listening to his pre/post game chats with Laws and Hodge in particular.
David Jackson is from Arnold and his true allegiances lie with the Stags and Arnold Town. Agree Perch is hopeless on the radio and Laws is not much better. The worst had to be Jason Lee on co commentary on Radio Nottingham - I think he lasted 2 games. He described a defender as “getting mugged off” by a forward in one game and I could feel Colin Fray shifting uncomfortably through the radio speaker.

Steve Hodge is excellent & far better than most pundits..........in fact I can't think of one pundit that is better. Compare him to Rooney and it's laughable that Rooney gets as much air time as he does. John McGovern was also very good, as was Steve Sutton.

Is that right? Never have guessed. Good at his job, I suppose.

Liked listening to Martin Fisher. Incredibly biased towards Forest (as you'd want him to be). Would often lose it when Forest score. Hodge's late equaliser in the fog at Southampton in the cup run when his voice cracked stuck in the memory. His commentary for Collymore's winner at Peterborough in 94 or Bart-Williams' goal against Reading in 98 still get played back. And all the while he was a Derby fan.

I wasn’t keen on David Jackson to begin with. He speaks in what I would call New BBC English where they talk quite quickly then drag out a word or phrase usually at the end of a sentence. I heard a broadcaster doing it Radio 4 a few years back and found it a bit condescending, like he was explaining a point to children.
I’ve got used to him now and he does bring some enthusiasm to match days.

Takes me back,QED. Triumphantly put in place when I at last understood a concept.

Agree. Hodge insight into tactics, formation etc is brilliant. I remember years ago, under Pearces management we were playing i think Fulham, Hodge raised before the match the flaws with this and concerns as they played a diamond in midfield. Sure enough they ripped us apart in first half. In prem he very knowledgeable about other teams and strengths/weaknesses which are likely to determine the outcomes of matches.

We’re spoilt with all the guys on radio Nottingham.
The mainstream commentators and pundits on national radio are an embarrassment, especially talkSPORT.
I sometimes listen when I’m at work on nights, Sam Matterface makes you want to rip your own ears off. Dreadful.
Sam Matterface makes me want to rip someone else's ears off, not just mine!

I've mentioned previously the two "experts" on the radio I simply can't abide are Brian Laws and Clinton frigging Morrison. A few years ago Morrison was on 5 live giving his expert opinion on a Manchester City game and there was the rare case of Kevin de Bruyne misplacing a pass and Morrison had the audacity to say something along the lines of "That was a bad pass but you know what I'd have done" Arrogant sh3t. And he lives across the road from where I used to live in **** Eaton

Yes we had Martin Fisher and Andrew James (massive Notts fan) on Radio Nottm Sport at one time. Martin Fisher was good but he always had his eye on a future national commentary job, he still lives in WB. Anyone hear how Chippers is getting on in Aus, last I heard he was doing women’s cricket commentary there ?

The commentary for that CBW goal v Reading in 1998 is one of my most favourite bits of commentary ever, the guy barely keeps it together!

Chippers is doing a lot of sports work with the national broadcasters out there. Seems to be coping.
