Bragging Rights or Points???

I personally, believe points should be the priority over anything else. League success opens oppurtunities financially and in terms of status that the cup competitions simply cannot compete with.

However getting the tie against Derby has brought a great debate amongst supporters (within my school) on which is more important. Not only a bragging rights at stake now there is also a home tie to the "world champions" aswell. It has only infuriated the whole debate.

As I mentioned If we were to get 3 points on saturday against Cardiff but end up losing to Derby I would be more than satisfied. For me this FA cup run was a success before we had even played a game in the competition (we had automatically got further than round 2!!!) We then went on to beat the richest club in the world convincingly so I am proud of what we have acheieved this year.

It does concern me that an FA cup run could lead to a loss of league focus. I know someone like Billy Davies will always do his best to ensure the players full focus is on the league but that is a tad challenging when you have a squad like ours about to come against Man Utd should we get through. The last thing we need is another relegation to league one. It was not mentioned at the start of the season with our "promotion aspirations" but of late particularly after CC's sacking it was thoroughly reinforced that league one was a place where we were to keep well clear.

It would be great to say "we beat Man Utd and got through to the quarter finals of the cup" I doubt people would be too impressed enjoying those memories travelling to glamourous clubs such as Carlisle or Yeovil.

To conclude my views are simple. 3 points are far more essential than giant killings. Anything that occurs in the cup should be considered a bonus and no more. Prioritises need to be sorted in preparation for such a big tie and I think Davies is probably one of the better managers at getting his message across to players as he has demonstrated in the few weeks he has been here.

Why can't we have both? :-*

perfect situation for me would if we beat derby in the fa cup, then lose to man u by the odd goal.

we can then concentrate on the league.

by the way, derbys re-aranged fixture with cardiff away is 3 days before we play them in the league.

Given our current injury crisis it would seem only right that we rest players for the cup game if needed. However, we should try and win every game regardless of the competition, I am a big believer in tying to win every game you play.

If you could only have one, anyone who doesn't say points is a fool.

I think the cup run has done us the world of good. Beating city has given everyone at the club loads of confidance to carry on and put together a great winning streak. Hopefully we can progress in the cup and face Utd. We will lose that without doubt - but it should be a day for everyone connected with forest to enjoy and should make us a nice few bob.

I know the league is a million times more important than the cup but to get one over on the scum would just be amazing. Think about it, when was the last time we saw a sell out at the CG? Ages ago. And we have sold out in one day for the reply, so obviously a lot of fans rank this game up there.

If it was against anyone else in the country, i wouldnt be that bothered if we lost (im always bothered when we lose) but you know what i mean. Knowing full well we are going out next round anyway - one more win would be a dream come true, to send them out. Both clubs could do without it, but lets enjoy it for what it is and spank them. I just dont ever want to give them any satisfaction and beating us in our own backyard would make there season.

In summery i want both. If i had to choose a win and a loss out of the games with Cardiff & Derby, then i would take the F.A Cup victory everyday of the week. Beating derby in the F.A Cup in front of a packed CG under the lights - how can anything compare to this supporting Forest
Cant see us getting anything at Cardiff anyway.

I'd go for beating Derby then being relegated to the Conference.

This is an interesting view. On surface value, Beating the Sheep = bragging rights. Simple. HOWEVER there is also an additional issue of pride at stake here. It is imperative that we perform better against Man Utd than Direby did in the Carling Cup.

Naturally the media will draw comparisons between us and the Sheep (given our rivalry) and the fact we will have both played Man Utd this season. Doubled with the fact, we comprehensively beat United's local rivals Manchester City, this clash then becomes a Best of the East Midlands vs Best of the North West game. Realistically, we aren't expected to beat Man Utd unless they have a very poor day and we get the rub of the green. It would be great, but its unlikely. For me Winnits gets it right....

Agreed. While hammering the Sheep in the FA Cup would be great and bragging about it even better, it would be short lived if we ended back up in League One. We've got to look at the long term perspective. Our Championship survival is the priority. While I am a firm believer in trying to win everything, we are highly unlikely to beat United and thus this is great chance for the club to gain some valuable exposure, make some money and most importantly give the City Ground fans a great day out.

Let's defeat the Sheep, enjoy it, then concentrate on the League and watch Derby retreat to their relegation pen where they belong.

Ipswich-Forest is re-aranged for the same night as Cardiff-Derby.

Why is it if we win against Derby we are automatically relegated to the League below ? Have I missed a new rule or something ?

I think a better way of putting it is like they did on Radio Nottingham last night .... Robin Chipperfield and Colin Fray were having a right disagreement :-*

Would you rather, if you could have only one, BEAT Manchester United or Cardiff ?

Whilst beating Manchester United would be amazing, and brilliant, its so unlikely and so unexpected and the Cardiff Game is simply so much more important.

I'll probably disagree on Wednesday when we're playing the sheep - but I don't really care as long as we get something from Cardiff ... as hard as I expect that to be.

I'd choose a victory over Man United - semi finals of the FA cup as the prize, much better than three points which in the long scheme of the things won't count for much as we'll stay up and we're unlikely to beat Cardiff anyway.

TLDR: We'll stay up, so lets have a flutter at the cup. Sorry if that makes me an idiot Al. :)

If we beat Utd, then it will be the QF wont it, not the SF?

If we beat Derby than il be happy anything after that is a bonus for me.

Good on ya mate

Supporting Forest is a passion and everyone has different views on what is important for them personally. For me, beating derby is the pinnacle - i come from Heanor, half the people on my street are reds the other half are rams. The same applies to my mates and our sunday team 50 / 50 forest n derby fans. To lose to them would be unthinkable and unbareable. I would never hear the last of it. If we lose to Cardiff, well fair enough, there a top team in the division, weve got a small and young squad and are expected to get beat. Im desperate to win against them as well, dont get me wrong, but between the two its a no brainer for me.

Like i said, any other team and a crap draw next round id go for the league match. Hopefully we will pick up enough points in the league to not even remember if we lose to Cardiff. I support Forest because i love football and love supporting them. I wont us to be the most successful team in the world but im also a realist, so il except the next best thing. As a forest fan living in Heanor, being better than derby and beating them means everything. Wheres the fun and excitment in accepting defeat against derby and going out of the F.A Cup? These are the games that i live for, especially if the winners get to play against the world champions! Imagine it, Forest verses Man Utd on telly on a sunday afternoon in front of a sell out crowd, for me this is what football is all about.

I know people come on here and talk in detail about Forest finance, and the board of directors, Mark Aurther, this stuff doesnt really interest me. I just like turning up on a saturday, having a few beers and cheering on Forest. Not having a pop at anyone whos gets involved with all the finance stuff, just doesnt appeal to me. Ive got enough financial issues to worry about at home before i get to engrossed in any one elses.

I might be a traditionlist (probably born in the wrong era). I like football for what it is, a passionate game, and it doesnt get any more passionate thatn Forest v derby in the F.A Cup

To be fair if we beat Derby or not I cannot really see us going down.

£275,000 for TV money (I believe has mentioned) would be great for the club, on top of that prize money for getting to the 5th round I would suspect jump that up to £300k, which is quite a lump of cash the club hasn't budgeted for which is a bonus.

Either way if it is cup, league, or friendly we should ALWAYS go out to beat our closest rivals..

As someone has already said, BD is will try and keep their feet on the ground and take every game as it comes rather than the youngsters' minds wandering..

beat the sheep-beat maure-beat the arse's-beat the scousers-beat everyone then we'll win the play-offs and go unbeaten in the PL win the FA cup twice in a row and the league cup then win the quadrouple(spelling?) in 2011/12 season done*

*this will only happen if they apoint me manager

My head says the points are far more important, but I have a little urge to say I want the win against Derby and the big occassion against United

If the question was a win against Derby next week in the cup or a win against them in the league, I'm sure 99% of fans would say the league and rightly so IMO. The 1% would be the cup romantics who fancy a crack at Man U and as has been mentioned in this thread, then fair enough if that floats your boat - you should be able to support Forest however you like (as long as it's constructive of course.)

The caveat to this is obviously, mainly due to home advantage now, most fans believe we can beat them in both games (and I'm one of them.)

I think Cardiff away on Saturday is going to be an incredibly tough game, certainly the toughest we've had since Coventry away (and even they weren't that great). The Man City game was a one-off spectacle where we had absolutely nothing to lose - the lack of pressure on us that day was a massive factor in our victory IMO. Although it was a fantastic performance, I'm sure most fans would admit that City were poorer than we thought they'd be.

I would bite my own arm off for a point against Cardiff and frankly with our current set of injuries, mainly up front, I really don't think we should be that dispondent with a defeat. As with Derby away to Brum in mid-week, these aren't the sorts of games that will determine our survival. They ones against our immediate rivals will.

So for that reason, I would take a win against Derby over Cardiff. For me, football is about memories - those stand out games that stick in your mind for years after - and next Wednesday could be another match to add to that. Unless we beat Cardiff 4 or 5 nil (not going to happen), would a victory really provide as much joy than one over Derby after waiting 3 years to get them back at the CG? I think not.
