Bitcoin / Crypto-Currency thread

An interest of mine for a while now, thought it deserved its own thread.

Anyone invested in Bitcoin? Or Litecoin/Doge? Thoughts on how it'll fare in the future? Especially given news about MtGox today...

Its just gonna get bigger. I need to invest in dogecoin, started as a joke but is doing big things now.

I think a small group of people will make a lot of money out of it, everyone else will just be funding their get-rich-quick-scheme. Money is complicated enough for most people at the best of times without introducing the idea that money can be created out of nothing just using numbers and maths.

No it isn't, it's made of metal. At least it was until Gordon Brown had his bright idea...

Anyone who invests in a currency inspired by unfunny pictures of dogs with Comic Sans font captions deserves to lose their house, car, job and family as a result.

Only poor people think of money as metal and paper.

I thought I was mixing with more distinguished folk here :bigboss:

Bought a small about of bitcoin in January shortly before the recent round of bad news. Not heard anything regarding mt gox today?

It's still a way away from being an established currency, it faces a lot of challenges. But I think cryptocurrency has legs, on an open internet anyway.

Investing in Bitcoin probably isn't worth it anymore given the risk of it dropping in value (currently it's stable at around $500 per coin isn't it? That's a lot of money for something that doesn't actually exist). I'd only get some if people start panic selling for a low market value due to some kind of unforeseen circumstance such as the disappearance of that website last night. I know a guy that made around £10,000 from Bitcoin after he sold his last year and there are guys from the /g/ board that are pretty much set for life because of the profits, but they all hopped on the bandwagon long before Bitcoin was receiving a massive amount of media coverage. It might be worth mining a few bit/lite/dogecoin if you have nothing better to do with your time and know a thing or two about computers, but buying bitcoins at this moment in time would be insane. Given it's ties to illegal websites and online markets it wouldn't surprise me if the US Government was trying to close it down somehow, like what they did to the Silk Road.

Buy / mine some Dogecoin and wait a year or two for the value to soar up as it's low risk given the current lack of value and it might just follow a similar trajectory to Bitcoin. Not too sure about Litecoin as it's only risen to 7x it's starting value and will probably never be on Bitcoin's level. I'd say avoid any other imitation coins such as Feathercoin or Peercoin as they'll probably just die. The "next Bitcoin" will probably be the Pandacoin, it's going to do a little jump in value like Dogecoin and Litecoin some time soon.

I'm going to set up my own currency up named "BoingCoin" and will feature pictures of past WBA greats such as Ishmael Miller & Gary Megson

Having looked at Bitcoin in 2010 when it was like $8 a coin I'm seriously thinking of buying a shedload of Doge. It won't rise anywhere near the amount but like you say, might follow an upward trajectory.

It all seems too dodgy - no regulation and no base, and transactions are untraceable - and a couple of repositories holding LOTS of people's money are "hacked" and all the contents have been stolen?!

Hmmm.

that's what i was thinking. i don't really care about the theme. I heard about a guy from norway who bought 200 bitcoins and forgot only to find last year that he had £63,000 sitting in his my documents folder.

I wish I had done it years ago when I had a pretty powerful PC on most of the day doing very little, just from that I could have become very wealthy in the bitcoin boom

Bump. Some investors in here from 2014! Be very interested in hearing if they held all that time or sold at a good point

I’m a massive crypto enthusiast although not been in the space for very long. Interesting times at present, some great opportunities to buy.
