Why has Birtles used Reading as an example of parachute payments not guaranteeing success?

Surely Direby would be a better example.

Is he just trying not to offend them?

By Reading staying in the championship, don't they get the payments? thus it would be too early to suggest they don't work as they havent had chance to spend any of it.

Brum went straight back up so they don't get the payments.

Derby are just hopeless anyway and should certainly be used as an example of failure.

The figure being touted around when direby won the richest game ever at Wembley was 65 million.

My understanding is the 40+ mill was paid when they were in the prem and this would be followed by two payments of 10mill - each following season if they stayed down in the Championship.

direby have already stated that this money has been spent or is accounted for in terms of wages etc

Basically their shafted.

They still have high earners on the books like Savage, Carrol, Commons (C**t), Teale, Villa + a few others I cant remember as they are that dire

The club is still 35 million in debt.

Dont be fooled by apparent high attendance figures either. A huge proportion of direbys gates are made up of free and dirt cheap tickets. Season ticket prices are also very cheap compared to Forest for example.

Even with our attendances of low 20's, I would not surprise me if Forest generated more match day revenue that small town direby despite their apparent higher attendance.

direbys 11 point all time pi*s poor record for Prem points total will stand for eternity. Stoke & West Brom has easily eclipsed this total 3 fold.

& for any direby fan who gives you the predictable we finished higher than you line....

A simple reply, for a simpleton.

Derby went into last season as self proclaimed promotion favourites and failed miserably. Only escaping relegation fears with a week left in the season. And as for finished above Forest? Well, take our two local derbys out the equation and our form against the remainder of the league Championship teams is superior to theirs.

Derby are the next Norwich, Southampton, Charlton.

Nigels going to be running back to his Mummys apron strings before you can say "Commons is a fat fu*k face whos only loyalty in life is to the Pukka Pie seller outside the Brittania Stadium, Stoke" - Watch this space.

He got them their only win.

Id say if you took his points to games total across the whole season its ALOT more that 11.

Haven't Reading released a load of players? and they didn't sell a vast amount of players in order to aim for an immediate return. Players like Hunt, Doyle and Harper were all kept at the club despite nominal fees and premiership interest and that was in return for promotion now that has failed and so they are going to have to get rid of those players without replacing them because parachute payments will have been paying for the players who stayed this season.

I find Southampton and Leeds the best examples. Look at them now if anything relegation from the premiership and spending big to make a failed instant promotion has ruined them financially and now both are plying their trade in league one trying to get back on track.

Reading will get another set of parachute payments this year, around £10m-£11m, I think.

Only slightly.

He was indeed on course to gain more than 11 measly points, but he's also the man who thought Darren Moore was good enough to play in the Premier League amongst other carthorses.

I do admit to harbouring slight doubts over his eye for a player, although so far his signings have been very encouraging and our transfer team don't tend to sign joke players like Moore. We'll have to see though won't we.

In fairness to Billy his Derby team did actually win a game in the Premier League (albeit against Newcastle), unlike his sucessor Paul Jewell.

he has also stated that they got promoted too early, and because of the play offs he had very little time to sign players etc.

He was also not backed by the board as a huge majority of their promotion money was spent clearing debts, if im not mistaken?

Please don't go knocking Davies, there is absolutely no point in associating him with that club anymore. He is our manager now and has a bright future planned for us

Totally agree. He knew that team weren't good enough and didn't have the backing needed. Their biggest outlay was Earnie. i think he mostly relied on freebies after that. Add to the mix he had a bunch of old journeymen and had to rely on 1-0 wins, Billy knew that team needed to be totally rebuilt !

I truly believe that is why he keeps on about building a side over 2 or 3 seasons. we however have a great young squad with bags of potential, a chairman who is willing to back the manager.

It wasn't a miracle to avoid relegation. The miracle was how he turned a gutless team with no stomach to fight into a hard battling, versatile squad !

I said at the time that BD got sacked for being to successful.
By that I mean they went up to early, and totally unprepared for the premier.

Yeah D*rby's failure in the premiership ran a lot deeper than purely mismanagement by Davies. If Billy had his way,I'm sure he would like someone better in the central of defence than Darren Moore but he was royally screwed over by the board in that summer after promotion and had to work with a bunch of championship players in the top flight, which was always going to be a disaster.

I always understood his budget was limited in terms of wages and that is why he was ever reliant on the Howard's and Moore's etc. from what I remember he was enforced to keep most of that side that somehow managed to gain promotion in the first place. Am I wrong in saying Earnie was their most expensive signing at 3.5m?

I think here he has a much better budget and the players he is aiming for are quality and precisely what we need.
