Birtles: Forest signings must gel:
JUST as Billy Davies was probably ready to erupt with frustration at the lack of transfer activity, a flurry of new signings came along like buses.
And, when you look at the nine players that Forest have brought in, there is only one possible conclusion you can come to.
That is that, quite simply, Forest are far better equipped to flourish than they were last season.
It was not that they lacked quality players. They just did not have enough of them.
Now Billy Davies' problem will be rather different. And rather more welcome. Because – while I still feel they need another defender – the issue for the Reds boss will be keeping all his players happy.
But there is a bigger issue as well, because good players do not make a good team.
At Manchester City, Mark Hughes has assembled some of the brightest talents in European football.
But there is a very big difference between quality individuals and a quality side.
Don't get me wrong, with Davies at the helm, I don't think that will be an issue at the City Ground.
But my point is that, unless Forest have all the required components, their hopes of securing a place in the Premiership may well go unfulfilled.
With the impressive work they have done over the summer, they are 95% of the way there.
But just a little more work – to bring in that centre-half – could make all the difference.
Just another fruitless statement that he's being paid for!!!
What has he told us that we didn't already know?
