Billy says "no" to loan signings and "yes" to winning ugly

BILLY Davies today told his Nottingham Forest team they have played the best football in the Championship this season – and challenged them to get back to playing at the same level.
The Scot (pictured) believes the passing style that the Reds produced during their climb into the promotion race has been better than anything seen outside of the Premiership.
And, as they look to bounce back to winning ways following the 1-0 defeat at Doncaster, Davies called on his players to remember what they are capable of.
"There are many games left, many points to play for," he said.
"This young side has entertained and the football we have played has been recognised throughout football.

"We have played some wonderful football, probably the best in the league.
"But sometimes we have an off-day and it will happen again between now and the end of the season.
"These players have entertained the fans of this club to the highest level; they have produced some wonderful flowing football.
"That will come back into their game when we get over this blip.
"We sit where we are in the table because we deserve to be up there.
"We have had one or two blips in the last few weeks but, as I said, the world has not collapsed around us.
"Three defeats in 25 is a record we can be proud of."
Tonight, Forest face a tough, physical Blades side with play-off aspirations of their own.
"I would be happy with an injury-time winner going in off somebody's backside right now," said Davies.
"When we can, we will play the football that everyone wants to see at this football club. But we are also in a results business.
"When you win you are everybody's friend, when you lose, you are their enemy. That is the business we are in."
Davies reiterated that Forest are not in the market for a loan signing to fill the void at left-back.
"Before we went into the transfer window, we were in a strong situation.
"Since we came out of the window, we are now a weaker side. That is disappointing.
"But experience has taught me that bringing in second, third or fourth choices is not the answer.
"If you do not get your first recommendations, working down the list is not always the answer.
"I am not too thrilled about the thought of jumping in and signing just anybody."

Interesting he says he's learned about going for 3rd or 4th choice signings. I wonder what crap he signed for D*rby taught him that? Our gain is D*rby's loss!

I appreciate his sentiments about not bringing in 3rd/4th choices....but we dont have anyone else currently available in the squad who can fill that role.

Think Billy maybe going to far here to prove a point.

The term "cutting of nose to spite face" springs to mind....

Agree its all fine and dandy sticking to his principles, but I feel it is to prove a political point. 1st and 2nd choices (Bale and Shorey) proved to be unrealistic in our current position, either due to players ambition (i.e. premiership now) or financially.

3rd and 4th choices were probably the realistic 1st and 2nd choices all along, and personally would rather have a specialist left back than none at all.

Is this a good time to point out that Gregor Robertson was a 'specialist' left back? As was Alan Rogers?

I have faith in what BD is doing but despite this the lack of a proper left back still leaves me feeling uneasy.

Especially when we saw how beneficial bringing in Shorey was. Granted he was clearly a quality player but I'd be surprised if there's noone better than Perch/Cohen in that position available.

Ritchie De Laet on loan?

3rd/4th choices may be rubbish. It's all well and good speculating we should have tried for them, but we don't know who they are.

There is a really important sentence in that article and a few fans need to take note of it

With Cohen providing ample cover at Left Back and Julian Bennett back in training and probably desperate to show the manager what he can do, i'd say that Billy is prepared to wait for him! I would have thought Bennett is two or three weeks away...

3rd and 4th choices on loan aint bad when they havent cost you sod all and they can provide cover for inured/knackered/suspended players.

but I am not the manager and billy is I have been critical recently so im going to stay positive and trust him.

Bennett has been out for over a year and is an unknown quantity at this level, I think pinning our hopes on him to resolve the left back problem is a long shot.

As much as I'd like to believe that Bennett is merely a couple of weeks away from returning I think that prediction is somewhat optimistic.

It'll take him a few weeks to build up match fitness at least. He's been out for so long I sometimes forget he even exists.

is the broads thinking that we will get some players in on loan, get a good look at them and then know for sure if it is worth signing them.

Billy's playing a game with the board now but what he hopes to acheive from this is anybody's guess. It must be pointed out that Chris Gunter came in via the very same loan market last year and did a sterling job and as a result I have to agree with thehockeyhustler's sentiment that he may well be 'cutting off his nose to spite his face'.

Playing Cohen or Perch at left back must be our 3rd or 4th choice already,,would like to see a natural left back brought in to give us some shape back, but we have to trust in Billy knowing what he is doing..he has brought us this far,and its so good not to be fighting for life at the wrong end of the table.

I thought we decided last night that I was the natural choice for the club at left back. I'm fat, old and can't play football. I'm the obvious choice. If Ashley Cole stays injured I reckon my world cup spot is already in the bag.

If there was a suitable left-back available then I am sure Billy would sign him in an instant on loan. I trust his judgement and whatever he thinks is best for the club.

any left back would do
this has been a problem area at the club for quite a few years now, you would have thought they had noticed and done something about it
