I think Billy was well aware of what he had to spend. He opted for the winning from the front approach so in honesty -and i know i keep saying it- he needs to play a system that compliments that. 3 at the back, it just looks like 1 or 2 of them will be midfield players. ideally, with him being defensive minded I'd look to McKenna to lead the back line, wes, cohen. Its early days in the league so lets silence those shouting for it now. then in front of them you have Ando, gugan, majewski, tyson, and in front of them goldie, ade and blackstock.

Saying that i don't think he'll risk mckenna in this game, mebbe not wes too. Its traditionally been a fixture run for trying new players... and i am sure Bradford will after saturdays result.

it's tricky...what's Billy to do? You can't legislate/prepare for injuries/suspensions that just hit you right like that! and not his fault we missed out on all the targets, Mills, Barker, Jones, Fox. Mattock etc...blame the acqusition panel. The pressure must be immense being a football manager, important not to heap any more, really and like he says diving in to buy anyone is not the answer (just cos you suddenly find yourself in that situation) You might say he was a bit quick to loan out a lot of the younger players and they might be able to fill in now, but in the long run its the experience that they need which will do them good. We have to continue being supportive at this time.

It has been short sighted not to at least bring someone in with a view to covering the positions.

Ah well, I'm sure the team are working over time to rectify the situation. At least they are aware there is a problem, which means they're not just ignoring it and hoping for the best.

At this point, I'd be happy with ANY recognised central defender coming in, even if it's only a short term loan.

Kind of requires three centre back type players, though, and we're struggling to field 2!

Its the favoured system in South America.
Brazil have used it to great effect in the past when they often used Carlos and Cafu as wing backs.

I meant in league football. International football, yes, where you can pick fast, athletic players like you mentioned who can actually play in that position. They were both very good defensively, as well as being able to cross/shoot. Our wingers struggle with the crossing and shooting, let alone defend as well! :D Often in internationals, both teams were playing 3-5-2 as well, which isn't so bad. Though Brazil lost in 98 to France, who played a 4-4-2 formation.

ando mcgugan cohen

garner, adebola, goldie, lock-stock, tyson

Many German sides played 3-5-2 (with two 'marking' defenders, a Sweeper and two wing-backs).

Borussia Dortmund won the 1997 European Cup, beating Juventus 3-1, playing 3-5-2.

Bayern Munchen played 3-5-2 under Ottmar Hitzfeld (including in the 1999 European Cup Final, when they lost to Man United unluckily!)

And (of course...) England under Bobby Robson in the World Cup in 1990 played a "Sweeper" formation which was either 3-5-2 or 5-3-2, depending on whether they had the ball, or not!

I think it's more to see "when has *any English Team* won anything playing 3-5-2".

I can recall Swindon playing 3-5-2 in one of the early Premier League seasons, which lead to them conceding over 100 goals, and getting relegated...

Football is constantly changing and when some fancy foreign manager does well with a 3-5-2 formation everybody will copy as it will be seen as fashionable.

Let's start the trend. :bigboss:

I'm pretty sure they didn't...as John Barnes and Chris Waddle played as orthodox wingers in that World Cup. We only really saw the 3-5-2 under Glenn Hoddle?

Holding midfielder anyone? We could play with 3 of them accross the back plus another in midfield, the resyt of the team made up of forwards there sorted :) who needs defenders they only get in the way!!

Funnily enough, when they had the 'tribute to Bobby Robson' the other weekend, ITV played the England-Germany match (yes, the one where Gazza gets booked) and England were playing with sweeper, 5-3-2 (or 3-5-2 when attacking.

Pyscho and Paul Parker where the full backs, and Lineker and Beardsley up front - I don't think Barnes played (could be wrong, as I wasn't really paying attention) but it was certainly either three or five at the back (depending on how you look at it) as they played with a Sweeper.
