Billy Davies should have never been out of work

Aside from the details of yet another quality Forest performance and result, this was my main thought coming out of the pub tonight.

Yes, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the decision of the Derby board to ditch Davies in the Prem is being made to look a pretty awful one in my eyes. Equally, the decision of Nigel Doughty to bring him here looks to be pretty inspired at this stage.

Calderwood had to go this time last year and we should count our lucky stars that (a) Another equally attractive club hadn't sacked their manager just prior to that and (b) ND managed to tempt Billy here.

Davies got a Derby team promoted that was woefully equipped for the Prem (especially after a pretty poor summer of signings) and the team got severly found out. However, surely the Derby board should've had a bit more foresight after working with Davies to see that he was the best manager (or at least a very good option) to make sure they were at least a competitive Champ club, which I'm sure he would've done.

Usually, managers are out of work because they have failed in their previous job (or at least failed in the eyes of their boards) or simply have a lack of experience. I don't believe this applies to Billy Davies and he should've been kept on at Derby even if they ended up getting less than 11 points. They would've been a damn sight better off than they are now.

I could maybe just about understand their decision if they brought in a top-notch manager to replace Davies, but they brought in Paul Jewell.

We should be very grateful that there was an out-of-work manager at the time we needed one that was the exception to the rule and shouldn't have even been unemployed.

apparently he was doing a bit of "cash in hand" painting & decorating between jobs but ironically his preparation work in this field was shoddy and the work soon dried up as word got around , in a nutshell he's a fantastic football manager but shit painter & decorator . it must hurt the sheep board to see him doing so well with us ;D

donny did well considering how shit Derbys ground look, pitch was cut up and half of it was white with frost... unlike our perfect green blanket, that still looks like it did back in Augest. no wonder we beat the fester and derby

Think back to the early 70's and the goings on with a certain Mr Clough and Mr Taylor. Will history seriously repeat itself? I've lauded Billy since the rumours first surfaced about his appointment, I am still confident he will be our best manager since the great man.

While its easy to make all the connections - ex-Derby manager, that fell out with their board, arrives at 2nd division Forest following a boxing day drubbing by Doncaster and sorts out the mess created over a decade by managers trying to emulate the last great manager - its unlikey that we're going to take the top flight by storm in the same way and win the champions league two years i a row.

Nabbing our arch-rivals' First Division Championship-winning manager, getting promoted from the old Second Division, being promptly crowned First Division Champions ourselves and then winning the old European Cup two years on the bounce were all pretty unlikely too...

If you can't dream then there's not much point being a football fan.

To go along with the sentiments of this thread, we can all be thankful Billy is our Manager; our gain is everyone else's loss.

The team are playing some lovely football, and Billy has a plan, although he's doing a fine job keeping everyone's feet on the ground.

Success is coming, and we'll do it with Billy at the helm. I only hope we can keep hold of him!

Didn't Billy say he had offers before he joined us ?

The football he has got this team playing is just a pure joy. Like he said yesterday a good majority of that team were fighting relegation last season, I think it shows that the players all had it in them, but the mark of any good manager across any industry is how you get that talent out of somebody and then how you use it.

Obviously the signings he has made have helped greatly for many reasons, but the competition for places pushes the players, and when they do get their chance most of them are taking it, examples being McGugan, Earnshaw when he came back and probably Moussi amongst others.

I think on The Football League Show last night someone mentioned that all the players have set roles and duties. The forwards have defensive duties along with the full backs having attacking duties. The organisation seems to be there that has been missing for a long time.

Plus the players are probably scared of him too . ;D

We had him on down at The Approach last month & he seems to very much have everything under control on all fronts...

Found his comments about the "purchase consultancy board" interesting yet frustrating at the same time, but we cant blame the board for taking action after the David Prat days.

If he does take us back to the big time he should be rewarded with a 2 year contract extension to try and take us further, and lets hope we dont make the same mistakes the sheep did- if they had got there wallets out and backed the man they could have been tackling the prem heads on like Birmingham & Fulham etc
(good job they didnt eh???)

Merry Xmas Billy- theres a large whiskey waiting for you in Southbank.

It's all about timing and opportunities. We know little about what was going on in the boardroom and Billy's life at the time he was at Derby and things change. Teams change, the game changes and people change.

It's quite possible that Billy didn't feel it was what he wanted or needed at the time and maybe, just maybe, the time is right now.

I, along, with many thousands of others, certainly believe and hope that we can extend our run and growth and make a real success of our return to the Premiership and achieve new things. The sky's the limit with the right squad and the right man. I strongly believe we have the latter and a good percentage of the supporting team to help him achieve it.

The biggest threat to Forest's future is losing Billy Davies. Otherwise I've seen enough to believe he will deliver us the Premiership either this year or next .

How might we lose Billy? Only 2 possible ways as I see things:
1) A underacheiving mid-sized Premiership club comes in for him and he accepts. Personally I can't see any candidates for this right now, unless a club like Everton does something stupid by sacking Moyes. I don't think Billy would accept a position at one of the dross clubs like Hull/Wigan.
2) Billy falls out with the board. His fiery temper and (in my opinion) badly judged public criticism of the acquisitions panel is always something to be concerned about but I believe his personality is also what makes him a great manager. The players work harder because they are scared of him, and scared of being dropped.

I don't think it's foolish to hope Billy could take us into the Top 8 of the Premiership one day. Who knows, maybe even further? I think the argument that Billy is 'just a good manager at Championship level' is utter tripe. People used to back this up by saying he can only play a very direct style of football that doesn't work at higher levels. Well that has been completely blown out of the water! Find me a team in this division who plays more attractive football than Billy Davies' Forest!

Unfortunately it is impossible now. :( This is why I put the Prem League and the Champs League in the room 101 thread. Both these institutions are now geared up to make the rich clubs richer and to hell with genuine competition.

Ultimately I believe it will be a massive longshot as to whether we could break into the Top 4 within the next 10-15 years.... but beyond that timeframe nobody knows what will happen. Certainly, one of the prerequisites for being a Top 4 side is the quality/size of the city in which the team is based. Nottingham must tick most of the boxes for being able to host a top footballing side. You could argue that Liverpool is a less appealing city than Nottingham and yet they haven't struggled to sign top foreign players.

Probably, though, we would need a wealthier chairman than Doughty (most likely foreign) to take us into the Top 4 within the next 10-15 years.

Anyway, this is all speculation. Best if we just concentrate on promotion for now.

If managers attracted transfer fees like players how much would Billy be worth right now?? £5 million?
