First Team Squad
Aside from the details of yet another quality Forest performance and result, this was my main thought coming out of the pub tonight.
Yes, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the decision of the Derby board to ditch Davies in the Prem is being made to look a pretty awful one in my eyes. Equally, the decision of Nigel Doughty to bring him here looks to be pretty inspired at this stage.
Calderwood had to go this time last year and we should count our lucky stars that (a) Another equally attractive club hadn't sacked their manager just prior to that and (b) ND managed to tempt Billy here.
Davies got a Derby team promoted that was woefully equipped for the Prem (especially after a pretty poor summer of signings) and the team got severly found out. However, surely the Derby board should've had a bit more foresight after working with Davies to see that he was the best manager (or at least a very good option) to make sure they were at least a competitive Champ club, which I'm sure he would've done.
Usually, managers are out of work because they have failed in their previous job (or at least failed in the eyes of their boards) or simply have a lack of experience. I don't believe this applies to Billy Davies and he should've been kept on at Derby even if they ended up getting less than 11 points. They would've been a damn sight better off than they are now.
I could maybe just about understand their decision if they brought in a top-notch manager to replace Davies, but they brought in Paul Jewell.
We should be very grateful that there was an out-of-work manager at the time we needed one that was the exception to the rule and shouldn't have even been unemployed.
