Billy Davies: Let me be in charge of transfers

Apologies if it has already been posted, but this morning's Sun carries an article where Davies openly criticises the way we 'buy' players.

NEW boss Billy Davies is ready to spark a massive boardroom bust-up in his bid to rescue Nottingham Forest from the drop.

Davies reacted with fury after a second humiliation in quick succession by bitter rivals Derby.

It was too much to bear for battling Billy as he watched Forest’s bitter rivals follow up their dramatic FA Cup replay win at the City Ground with a Championship victory stroll.

Now former Derby supremo Davies is determined to gain total control of Forest’s transfer affairs once the budget has been set by club owner Nigel Doughty.

Davies said: “It’s the same fight Rafa Benitez appears to want at Liverpool. And I agree with him 100 per cent — as a football professional, the manager is the best person to choose players and set a price for them.

“But here, I have no involvement with finance.

“It’s all left to others with the result that we failed to buy a single player in the January window and failed to loan anybody since.”

Pouring scorn on £60,0000-a-year “football consultant” David Pleat (below right), chief executive Mark Arthur and head scout Keith Burt, Davies sniffed: “I am sure they know exactly what they’re doing.

“David Pleat has a fantastic pedigree. He will be identifying players as he travels around this country and Europe on his ITV duties.”

I completely agree with Billy Davies that the manager should have control over which players the club buys. My only worry is, what kind of players will Billy bring in - we've been down the road of getting journeymen who only come here for a final pay day. I suppose we'll have to trust him and his track record or he'll be on his bike?

I honestly don't think he'll bring in journeymen.

He doesn't have a track record of doing so, so I don't see why he'd start.

Yes, he has said that he wants experienced players, but that doesn't mean oldies whose legs have gone, he means people who have Championship experience.

To compete at this level, we need at least five players. To survive at this level, we need at least two or three.

OK, our transfer committee has brought in some crap players, but they have also bought in some excellent players (Tyson, McCleary, Cohen). I just don't think it's wise to hand BD the reigns for transfers. I believe we would be in constant fear of journeymen looking for their last paycheck.

Why though?

We've bought no-one since the summer and Earnshaw was a publicity signing to say the least.

Things aren't working at the moment for whatever reason, and if you read my last post, I don't think we'd be getting journeymen in.

Who, if that's what you believe, will Davies buy?

He's the manager for God's sake. He picks the team, so why shouldn't he be able to pick the players in his squad?

N D obviously thought Billy was the right manager for Forest so he should back him in the transfer market and get rid of bloody Pleat, but were talking Forest here so nothing seems to make sense, makes me wonder how the bloke made his money in the first place

Yes but they've brought the good players in too slowly and in too small a number.

We need MORE good players, QUICKER.

For all we know, Davies could do that. And I know we don't want another David Platt scenario but if we go down to League 1 again, the whole policy would have failed.

Agree with Adam. It was a sensible policy for a relatively inexperienced manager like CC, with Davies he needs to be in control - it's the way the majority of managers' roles are defined - I can understand why he's f**ked off.

I wouldn't trust David Pleat to buy me a cup of coffee, never mind a decent footballer.

Doughty obviously has the right to set the transfer and wage budget, but after that it should be entirely up to Billy Davies who he buys.

I agree with Billy 100%, he picks and trains the squad why shouldn't he have control over what players he brings in?

Edit: Also I'm happy that Billy isn't pussy footing around the board and telling them exactly what needs to be done, well done Billy I'm still behind you all the way.

I'm just worried he will bring journeymen in - I wouldn't have a clue which names. But it's at the back of my mind what happened during the Platt-era with the overpaid agers in the squad

That is my only concern. I do understand about he should be able to pick the players for his squad. But I don't see how this situation is any different to when CC was in charge.

Regardless of whether it works or not, you have to wonder what sort of man accepts a job, knowing the transfer policy, then bitches about it?

Surely the transfer policy was told to him during the interview stage.

If we are finding it hard to bring in players presumably Davies has to make the best of what he has got.

Why then, at every opertunity does he tell the press his players aren't good enough for this level? We have got enough to stay up, give them a bit of confidence.

Davies is more concerned with his own image and ego than this football club. He is trying to distance himself.

You can bet if we had been winning games it would all be down to his master managment.

It's worth noting that Savage was past it in many Derby fans eyes and was on loan in league one. Then a good young manager came in. Recognised he still had it and made the best of his squad.

Now Savage looks their best player along side Commons who looks consistant and dangerous, far more than he did here.

I saw this coming and whoheartidly agree with this. The further away Mark Arthur is from transfer dealings the better....

BD is not one to be taken the piss out of and has stood up and said it how it is.

Not that I am at the least bit suprised by this news. Hopefully Doughty will agree...

Goodbye Pleat :)

It is also worth noting that if my memory serves me correctly we were linked with Savage in the summer were we not?

Yeah, don't think there was ever much in it though.

The suggestion didn't meet with a very positive response on these boards!

True I was against the idea of bringing him in also, but now he is exactly the player we need...

Savage is a nothing player really. All he did was hoof it over his head, wind up the crowd, play a bit of 'crab football' that everybody so hates, and follow the ref around, telling him what to do.

I'd rather have a Paul Green type of player in the middle.

I agree his attitude stinks like the aftermath of a really bad curry, but I think he is experience that we are obviously lacking in midfield. His passing, distribution from the midfield and work rate on his day can be excellent like he is proving at D*rby.

His passing was the kind that a lot of people on here slated Sammy Clingan for. You're not allowed to pass it backwards or sideways.
