I might be old school but regardless if I'm allowed or it's my right of way, I would never pass a truck on the left on pushbike.

Same as but, apparently, the truck passed her on the right and turned left into an entrance slip road and into her as she was cycling straight on.

She didn't stand a chance. Police investigation ongoing but not looking good for the driver. Looking at what we know, my guess is the driver was looking for the turn-off (train station) and forgot the basics in his rush not to miss it.

Similarly, I'm always nervous when I approach a joining slip road from my left and see a lorry edging to join. In that moment you can sense they will have a moment of 'how fast is he going and will I just make it?'. I find myself shouting out 'don't you fucking try it mate!'

I shout the same from my helmet on motorbike.

I can't understand why people are willing to kill to save the seconds it'd take to slow down or wait till I've passed.

I think a lot of it is common or garden bad judgement shaped by their real-time mental state. I've stopped cycling early mornings and evenings because of this as you know a fair proportion on the roads are thinking about anything other than what's (literally) in front of them. I also won't go near a school at kicking-out time. The one near me is like the wacky races with stressed-out mums, and dads weaving all over the place trying to get in then out as quickly as possible..

The school a few roads from us is mental. Looks like a post apocalypse film sometimes with cars half mounted curbs, strewn across pavements and blocking drives etc. Luckily I miss the kicking out times.

Getting silly round our way now. Another female cyclist killed by a lorry in Oxford on Tuesday. Almost identical to the others I've reported with lorry turning left and killing a cyclist on the inside. This time at a roundabout. Driver already charged so no confusion as to where blame sits.

Ya must be crackers to cycle on UK roads nowadays.

I see plenty of crap motorists today that are just totally oblivious to other ton plus vehicles, never mind a 10lb bycycle.

Interesting you say that Raymondo. I've cycled for decades-commuting and for pleasure and until this year did big miles both in the UK and in lots of other countries.
There are some terrible, rude, inconsiderate and stupid drivers in the UK but by and large I feel pretty safe in Britain, provided I stick to certain types of roads. I think the point above about cycling early AM and PM rush hour is true too. Morning commute is the worst-people just aren't watching, I actually feel safer in the evening when its dark with good lights because people can't miss that.

I'd also say that road safety is worse in many European countries for cyclists. France is pretty awful in many places and the drivers are just horrible. Italy for all its "home of cycling" BS is just about the worst. I cycled Milan to Rome a few years ago and witnessed the most dreadful behaviour towards cyclists I have ever seen-including a lady knocked off her bike into a round about and the driver not even stopping to see if she was alive.

A friend of mine that was in the fire service said Sunday mornings were the worst time for being called out due to cyclists being hit. Their theory was motorists are less alert to other road users due to the roads being quieter and more relaxed, yet from a cyclists pov Sunday mornings are probably the best time to go out.

I don’t get out much now due to a knee injury but I’m more inclined to do trails or dedicated routes if I do. I just can’t be doing with the hassle of the roads, it’s bad enough in a van never mind a on lightweight bicycle.

Nowhere beats the Netherlands for cycling though, mainly because of the infrastructure implemented there.

Nottingham has got way better in recent years, and because of the natural landscape of the region I rarely even feel the need to use the roads. I will always do it as a last resort.

I live in the West of Nottingham at the far edge, and I can get to both Derby and Nottingham city centre barely even using a road apart from crossing occasionally, all cycle paths and bridleways.

I have never got the appeal of road cycling personally, I understand why people do it but I just ride my bike to be as far away from cars as humanly possible.

I would offer Denmark-specifically Copenhagen as trumping Netherlands. They have really good sizeable cycle lanes properly separated from the traffic and more importantly a law that says in the event of any accident between a cycle and a car, the car is always in the wrong. That focuses the minds of the drivers...

Depends whether you've had a double decker try to take you out deliberately or not, missed first time but got me at the second attempt. Tends to put you off commuting in a city.

I get it and you are right. Although its not a competition in decades of cycling my two worst accidents were broken shoulders coming off mountain bikes (which I now avoid)!. So I suppose the real lesson is cycling is never completely safe. But then neither is driving a car. Or walking.

I’ve never cycled in Denmark (never been fortunate enough to take my bike!)

I have previously spent a lot of time in the Low Countries and especially around Utrecht, which was a superb location for cycling around, and the provision for bikes at train stations is magnificent (and has gotten better; go and have a look at the new cycle-park at Utrecht Central Station!)

In Stuttgart I think I’m quite lucky because where I live, I’m a five-minute bike ride (on designated paths) from the city centre, and at the end of my road is a park with lots of cycle trails and a trail up to the edge of the famous Kessel („Cauldron“) the legendary hills that encircle the city. Having a cyclocross bike as well, means both are an option to use.

I can reach my office in 20 minutes too, and the only road I have to use is the road outside the office (which leads to our dedicated bicycle parking garage, which offers secure bike storage, lockers and showers).

Yep you are right it's not completely safe.

Although in general I try to put things in my hands, one of the offputting things to me about road cycling is it will only take a prat on his phone to wipe me out.

With mountain biking at least I know if I crash it's more than likely due to my own errors or riding dangerously myself.

Just my person preference though, I am sure everyone will have their own experiences

The only two things I can recommend about driving in France are:

1. never, ever, drive in Paris. Take the Metro, thank me later

2. if you must drive elsewhere in France, never, ever drive a car with the code „75“ in the number plate. 75 is the code for Paris, and everyone else in France roundly detests Parisians, so if you drive a Parisian-registered car somewhere else in the country, be prepared to get cut-up, insulted, not let out of junctions, spat at, threatened, mocked, blocked-in when parked, if that is, your car is even there when you get back to the car park.

Just. Don’t.
