A classic piece of headline grabbing bollocks by Sky Sports. We did not make an offer so there was no choice to make and therefore no possiblity of a snub.
As other people have said, you can't really call it a snub.
However, even if he had theoretically snubbed us, could you blame him? I wouldn't pick him ahead of Blackstock, Earnshaw, Tyson, McGoldrick or Garner...So his first team chances would be limited at 'Best'...
He has potential ? Well clearly he has missed the chance to work under a manager who develops and gets the most out of players ( Look at the turn around of some of our ' under achievers 'from last season).
He has gone because the competition here means that one bad game and your down the pecking order.
He is a Newcastle player because straight away he is probably their best foward.
He has gone to Newcastle because their strikers aren't as good as ours.
I think hes a top player. If we had got him at the start of the season then brilliant. Hes better than Adebola and McGoldrick and Garner (at the minute). He's a similar player to Dex, and got a great left foot. Would have been a brilliant signing. However, what would happen if we went up, I doubt he's be good enough for the prem s we would be have to many average premiership strikers! So sort of glad in a way we didnt get him, unless we off loaded someone else
The only players we should be signing are those who have the ability to play in the Premier League. And unfortunately, we're in a halfway house as regards that. Players who have PL quality - Shorey, Moses, etc - don't want to come here permanently atm because we aint there yet and a) we may not get there and b) we can't match the wages/status/prospects/'glamour' (Wigan?!) of a PL side. Players who lack PL quality (Best being a good example IMO, along with Pratley) aren't wanted here (or shouldn't be) as we would be committed to a 2-to-3 year contract and they'd never get a shirt if we got promotion, as we'd buy better players or stick with the ones we've already got who are better than them anyway.
The only way round this conundrum is to have conditional contracts - i.e. if we go up, you get a bonus and higher salary or, if we don't go up, there's an escape clause if a PL team wants to sign you. But that's a bit messy and the agents would rather wait four months for the 'ifs' to become certainties, as it will earn themselves and the players more money.
So I don't think Best is a big loss, nor did he truly snub us from what I can make out. Also, you can't blame Shorey and Moses for taking a bird in the hand. Nor can you blame the acquisition panel, who are the victims of our success to a degree.
I am sure Best did snub us when he left Southampton for Coventry, when he would have been a much need acquisition.
He's probably better than McGoldrick, Tyson or Garner but I still think there would have been no point in using resources in a position where we're already very well stocked there, when we need to bolster the squad in other places.
The same went for when we came up from League 1. We had to clear out our whole squad and get Championship level players in. Oh, wait, lots of them have turned out to be good enough.
It might have been that Best, Routledge, whoever, would step up just like say, Cohen did from League 1.
That said, what's kept us up is having promising players, as well as people who know the league. The likes of Earnshaw, Blackstock and McKenna have allowed us to make the step up. So, you are probably right in that we'd need a similar batch of Prem quality to allow other players to step up.
Here's a thing though, maybe our best player this season? Raddy. Unproven! You just never know!
You can see where this came from seeing as we spent the best part of 30 months in a relentless pursuit of Leon Best's autograph on a contract. He rejected us the first two times and his club rejected us the third.
We've moved on from Leon Best. He missed his chance.
All very pretty as a player, but not exactly effective against the better sides? I wouldn't want him and don't particularly think we should fear him if he plays for the pitch-invaders against us.
