Ben Olsen retires

Sad news that Forest mini-legend Ben Olsen (Beninho) has had to retire at the age of 32. He only played 20+ games for us, but went down as a bit of a legend due to his mix of tenacity and skill. He was an exciting player to watch. He never really got over the ankle injury that he received while on loan with us and has missed a lot of football, eventually choosing to retire this week. I think we were set to buy him for £2.5 million or so, but that never happened in the end. Shame!

Anyway, I don't know if anyone cared, but he was one of my favourites growing up and thought a few of you might be interested. Share you Olsen memories!

The coverage from the main soccer journalist included this...

"When news of Olsen's retirement began to circulate, I received an e-mail from Dave Brown, chair and secretary for the South West & M5 branch of the Nottingham Forest Supporters Club in England. (Olsen was on loan at Forest in 2000-01.) "He is and will always remain a part of Nottingham Forest," Brown wrote, "and we are proud to associate his name with us. Wonderful memories, Benny!"

Yeah, Olsen was (and still is) an honorary member of the South West and M5 supporters club branch (along with Chris Cohen).

Cracking player from what I remember. Such a shame we never got him permanently.

OOH, Ben Olsen!

Loved watching him play. I was only about 12 at the time and wanted to get his name on my shirt, but found out he wasn't playing for us anymore so had to change it. I was heartbroken.

Anyway, sorry to hear he's retired.

Olsen was a quality winger, hard working, pacey and had great right foot. My favourite loan signing of all time.

I don't think there was any of chance of signing him permenantly though, even if he had not suffered that ankle injury. We were on our knees financially and could not have afforded the £1,500,000 fee which was being demanded.

It was an incredible witty remark that I made and everybody missed it.

Ben Olsen playong for us was one of the few good moments in an era of depression on Trentside. I enjoyed watching him play for us and was dissapointed when he headed back to the States. All the best to him for the future, i hope he finds a decent coaching role to keep him going.
