Are we wrong?

Football is all about opinions, everyone has a right to their own and a right for that opinion to be repected but it seems that there is a huge chasm as a difference of opinion regarding McLeary.

Everyone I know agrees that McLeary was the wrong replacement night. OK so he put the ball across for the goal but having just watched the entire match again, after being there last night, I can honestly say that he did nothing else.

I agree that his mere pace tended to have an intimidating effect on the Derby defence but, for all that pace, he created nothing. Within 2 minutes of coming on an arm across his chest from a Derby defender was enough to send him veering wilding away from the ball, he constantly ran in to dead ends, didn't track back when Derby had the ball and his distribution was poor.

I think that his days are numbered at Forest as he was an unused sub at Charlton in Davies's first game in charge and didn't make the bench against Plymouth. He probably wouldn't have made the bench last night if it weren't for the fact that we named 7 subs.

I don't think your post is complete without stating who would have been the right option to bring on.

What would you have done?

IMO I hink he did alright for a lad that was playing in the lower echelons not so long ago. I am not sure about his long term future though, I have seen him at reserve level and he looks class there, but as we know the step up isn't easy.

I am not sure we can slate him for last night really as his cross set the goal up.

I do however feel he is running out of time to make an impact at the level Forest are at. It will be interesting to see what happens with Anderson out and see if he is given his chance...and whether or not he takes it...

The step up for Garath McCleary from non leauge Bromley is huge. He is young and only has 12 month or so of leauge experience.

He is a gamble (not Paddy) and perhaps signed on future potencial, rather than 1st team readiness?

I would have preferred to drop Perch to left back, push Tyson wide and put Garner on up front with Earnshaw. That way we would have retained the width with Tyson and Anderson (until injured) and got the extra fire power of Garner.

We went into half time 1-0 down with Derby all over us...Changes were made at half time...(Not just the substitution)...We then got a replay out of this Cup tie back to the City Ground...So why are people questioning changes made by the mangerial staff?...If you want to question McCleary thats a different matter...

He's 21...but i see him more as teenager as he's been a full time professional for a year...He came on at half time to replace Lynch who wasn't playing very well...the team was shuffled round...McCleary who hasnt been playing for the last few games ( for whatever reason)...tried to be exciting, creative, took a few balls from the wing cut inside found earnshaw in his feet (where he hadnt had it previous)...The goal was worked by McCleary he didnt run into a dead end he was calm and with two players around he picked out Tyson in the box who dummyed for Earnshaw...What more can you ask?....Defensive Duties...I don't think he was brought on to help us defend a 1-0 deficit...but yes after the goal was scored everyone has to do the dirty work...I went to the game and iv also watched it again on TV McCleary did his fair share with work back helping Chambers and his lovely crunching tackle, he also tracked back on occasions where Chambers decided to go on a mad one.

In my opinion he did have an influence on the game on right wing, not the biggest, but at times he was a threat and gave derby defenders something to think about on both wings.

I'm sorry but I fail to see how you can say that would've been a better change?

Tyson ran their two centre backs ragged in the second half, giving more space to Earnshaw. If you'd have moved him onto the left then his running would've been far more restricted.

Anderson also, caused no end of problems (along with Cohen) down that left hand side. Your decision to keep Anderson on the right (where he struggled to get past Stewart) and Cohen in the middle would not have been a more successful change, I'm sure.

You seem to have an irrational dislike for McCleary.

I thought it was a great substitution. Moving Tyson onto the wing would have been a waste as he was pulling the centre backs out of position with his pace.

McCleary was often drawing in both the full back and the left winger thus freeing up space on the inside.

My only complaint about the substitution was that it required Cohen to move even further out of position.

As for McCleary, I thought he was excellent. Full of running, bright as a button, made the goal and caused them a headache. They were effective down the flanks in the first half as their full-backs were able to get on the front foot. The substitution put paid to that.

I entirely disagree with this statement - I prefaced this post with the statement that everyone has an opinion and a right to have that respected. My opinion and that of many friends and acquantancies who have watched football for many years is that McCleary will not make the grade. An opinion that may (or may not) be shared by the current manager.

I thought it was a good move, their left back was almost as bad as Lynch and whilst I agree that McCleary has a lot of developing to do without the benefit of years of academy training, the fact he made the goal for me is justification enough for the change.

Agree with earlier posts that moving Tys out wide would've been a really bad call.

He was brilliant last night. He works so hard for his team, he's on the road to club legend status in my eyes.

Tyson's best game for us was against Charlton when he played wide on the left.

Irrespective of the actual substitution the post really is meant to raise discussion on McCleary's ability and future. I don't hold with this argument that he is still learning and he needs time - if he needs time he should be sent out on loan to play in League 1 or 2.

In our position we need the finished article and we need men who will stand their corner when the going gets tough, I think McCleary is too frail, too naive and certainly not worthy of inclusion in a Championship team at this time.

I think he merits a role as he had last night, an impact substitute when we're short on options.

I totally agree he isn't the finished article.

We will never know what McLeary is really capable of until he gets a proper run in the team. Being limited to the odd substitute appearence isn't real ideal for him to show what he can do on a regular basis.

I actually like to see Tyson out on the left. With Anderson out for the foreseeable, we certainly need some va va voom to create and carry and convert.

We still have Earnie and Garner to stick up front for a really attacking formation and with Cohen at the back we have a defender who isn't scared of moving with the ball.

With Wes back alongside the likes of Wilson and Breckin, and with Perch, McGugan and maybe Thornhill/McCleary in the middle, I think we have a cracking team in a 4-4-2. Might be a bit short on subs though.

Am I talking bollocks?

ps. my daughter (age 7) just read over my shoulder and wanted to know what 'bollocks' means. I told her it's a grown up word for 'rubbish'. (Waits for her to now suggest she takes out the kitchen 'bollocks' to the dustbin. ::)

Debatable, but my point still stands.

He will have the odd good game on the wing because of his pace but it's generally followed up with several ineffective ones before he's dropped/moved back up front. He doesn't have the variety or the technique IMO to become a top class winger, but up front where there's more space to run into down both the left and right channels, he's much more effective.

my opion on last night sub, where McLeary came on.I agree to it,because lynch was not having the best of games and that there rm,the play was being played through him. Also the goal came from McLeary. If you think about it,Cohen did not put a foot out of place when he went left back, because the play did not go that end as much.

i actually really like mcleary.

hes cocky and arrogant, and fast. prob the best technical footballer we have apart from lewis.

just needs to become a bit stronger and keep hold of the ball.

I thought he was rubbish last night to be honest.

I like that he trys things, but he just seems a bit lightweight, needs to toughen up.

Reminds me of Marlon Harewood in his first season or so.

I also really like McCleary.. afterall, even if some of his crosses aren't great.. he could still make it to a higher level (Aaron Lennon for example).

When he came on he was a certain threat to the Derby defence and if you couldn't see that then you must have no or very little footballing knowledge. He is a more natural winger than Cohen, can play L or R wing and with more match experience I am certain that his confidence and subsequently end product will improve.

Also, his name is spelt McCleary, not McLeary - so to answer your question, yes you are wrong (sorry for being pedantic, you just right royally pissed me off with your thread).

It's typical of a Forest fan to get on the back of a young lad who hasn't set the world alight yet, after all he did cost £20k from Bromley! He has only played 24 professional matches, for goodness' sake, and most of them as a sub! He has shown glimpses of talent and actually looks like he might be a decent player one day. For £20k, I think he's worth a bit more time and effort, especially when Arron Davies who cost a hell of a lot more has never done anything in a red shirt. Bromlinho did more in one half last night than he ever has. Yes, he's lightweight, one-dimensional, without direction, but he has got a bit of talent in there.

I hope he does have a future at Forest.

personally i thought mccleary done ok last night , especially coming into a crunch game like that with not many match minutes in recent weeks , i think he poses a threat certainly more so than davies.

big threads being started to berate the kid, zz doesn't like to see him get a bit of praise for his performance but everyone is entitled to their opinons, they will be read and that is that.
Im sure we will here more from zz when mccleary features and makes a mistake now anderson is sidelined

nevermind, you will make it as a pro in the next lifetime zig zag
mccleary did well
