are Forest overachieving?

I'd agree that we're exceeding expectations to a degree (in relation to BD's aim of a top half finish) but I wouldn't call that over achieving. With our squad we should expect to be roundabout the play offs. I think last season was more a case of under achieving with the players available.

At least he seems to think we're good.

All he means is we higher than he intially expected pre season - and we are. You won't find many forest fans who expected us to be 3rd at this stage of the season. What he isn't saying is that our players are punching above their weight, we've got one of the strongest benches in the division. Teams that are over achieving scrap wins, not dominate games.

I suppose we are over achieving on what was expected at the start of the season, however I think we very much deserve to be where we are now. The large number of additions and Davies tactical expertise are the reasons we've moved up so quickly. Our squad was very strong come the start of the season but the question was whether they would gel together quickly enough to make this season a winning one, so far they have.

I would agree that Leicester are the real overachievers, their squad at the start of the season did not look good enough to be pushing at the top end and fair play to them for that.

I seem to remember that there used to be a bloke who walked up and down the Trent getting players to over-achieve a few years ago. He was rather good at it! ;D

I honestly believe we are but only just. Maybe 2 players short for the season suspensions and injuries that always seem to happen.
But getting the 2 players may be unrealistic as we could do it this time round if luck allows the right players to be missing at the right time.
Dragon fruit is not worth the money for the taste, but it looks great.

He is right, no one expected us to achieve anything except mid table especially with a new team. Why moan, as long as we are the underdogs and no one expects anything from us that is less pressure on the players and club alike.

It makes a change from hearing about "massive potential" or "Under achievers" or "too big to go down"... :)

Thats actually a decent blog. You can tell he knows what hes on about as he picks out mckenna rather than as most pundits seem to do the flashier anderson/earnshaw/tyson/blackstock/gunter etc.

We are over achieveing when you consider most forest fans expected mid table and pushing around the play off spots. Right now we look stunning, and a good bet to push west brom and the geordies all the way.

Wheather we can sustain it- who knows. But right now, we're definitely miles above where most of us thought we'd be :)

Actually, a lot of pundit/media types have cottoned onto this and started doing the same in the last couple of months. Whether it's because they've seen us play, or been reading the message board threads praising McKenna's impact since the start of the season, I don't know.

As for over acheiving... we've got a squad of good individual players who work well together in a team and have proved they can play well from the very first game. How many times have we seen a team outplay us like we've outplayed teams at the City Ground? Not often. We've scraped a few lucky points on our travels, but we were unlucky to lose to WBA and Blackpool at home, so I think luck has evened itself out so far this season. I think our position in the playoffs is very fair, and I, just like most expected a mid table-playoff position at the end of the season. Anything less than playoffs now will be a disappointment!

This. If we win the Premiership next season, we're overachieving and not until then. Any team that doesn't concede for six games at any time is more than worth third in their league. You can't not pick up points if you never let anyone score, and points mean places.

We are doing far better than I expected, but we're not overachieving. We are better than all the teams below us and therefore rightly deserve our league position. Personally I think we play better stuff than Newcastle and Brom too. :)

It is true that our squad needs a couple of additions to protect us should key players get injured, but that's true of pretty much every team in the league.

We are certainly overachieving compared to what i expected at the start of the season, and until a few weeks ago i was just waiting for the bubble to burst and for us to settle back into mid-table. However, at the Sheff Utd game the other month it dawned on me that we do actually have the 3rd best team in the division and are probably 2 quality signings away from breaking the top 2 (assuming the top 2 dont strengthen that is!).

So effectively i think our current position is very fair and i expect us to finish there come May. Whether or not we can get through the playoffs is another matter as thats just a lottery but even if we dont go up the future looks very promising. I base this on the fact that our current squad is probably the only one in the division that doesnt contain any washed up, average journey men. It is a largely young squad that is hungry and wont need to be be broken up in the summer due to any severe financial constraints. Indeed i expect the squad to be stronger still next year and can honestly see us going up in style, a la Reading 05/06.

My expectations were a comfortable top ten finish with a possible play-off push if our new signings settled in well.

So to be pushing for automatic is fantastic. However I wouldn't say we are over achieving as the squad we have has proved itself to be more than talented enough to maintain this position.

I hope he does, because he's very much pro-Forest in the article, calling us the team he is most excited about for 2010.

'Overachieving' is a bit misleading, it makes it sound like he's waiting for our bubble to burst, when really it means we're performing beyond expectations and looking value for it.

We are over achieving.

We had aims and expectations of mid table finish We are fighting for a spot in the top 2 if that isn't over achieving then what is?

Wouldn't count on that, public aims and in house aims would be very different in the situation we were in.

If we finish in the top 6 I will be delighted. Thus, I believe we are over achieving by being in with a shout of a top 2 place.

public aims are always what dreams are made of. I think if you had an impartial person at the start of the year and asked them where they would think forest would've finished then they would've said mid table. The manager and the board clearly set the target out to be mid table finish. Therefore, I feel aims and expectations should lie in a mid table finish. If that's what the board and manager set out then thats what I expect to see, hence the real Kinnear fu*k up with the whole promotion aims.

So the way I see it expectations are being exceeded massively therefore we are overachieving.

I think you will find that article and the piece you quoted was by Matt Holland.

Read my post again and you will see, I replied to the heading "Holland reckons Forest are overachieving in the championship division"

Yea, but my point is I'd put a bet on that with the amount of cash ND spent last 2 seasons, and with it being billy, promotion would have been considered the aim pre season. Plus there's a difference between being higher than expected, and the players over achieving.

I read it as you just dismissing what he said in a humorous way, but I hardly attacked you about it.

Fortunately, as you have dealt with this in such a mature and reasonable way, you've not embarrassed yourself in the slightest.
