Are Derby Bigger Than Us?

Please try to read this post objectively and avoid responding with the typical offensive and sometimes thoughtless responses I notice so often on this site.

Some facts:

Derby County's average attendance this season is 26,500

Forests is 19,000

Nigel Clough said before the start of todays game that "Derby is very close to my family's heart. We have lived in Derby for over 40 years and this is a very special place for all of us"

We get Billy Davies, sacked by Derby County for his miserable attempt at staying in the Premier League

Kris Commons our "star" player left us for Derby last season

Robert Earnshaw, a total Derby flop, is signed by us for nearly £3m

Some thoughts:

Pride Park is a much louder, more raucous atmosphere than City Ground, with our pathetic A/B block making the only noise.

I grew up at a time when we were undoubtedly a bigger, better team than Derby, with a bigger fan base and more appeal. Have the tables now turned?

Insert hateful vitriol here ...........

In short NO.....

They have peaked after many many years of being a small town team. They are now on the 'downturn' with some Premiership 'hangers-on'. Forest have been a sleeping giant for the last ten years. We're hopefully moving in the right direction now with manageable debt. We are a major city with big aspirations and when we do get back to the top level then you will see 30,000 plus every week

Forest have spent the past three years with the big boys of League One, playing ugly ugly football at crap grounds around the country. Ticket prices remained stupidly high through out the period. Derby on the other hand have just come down from the Premier League and have been boosted by renewal tickets due to this. The club have also given away mad promotions to try and fill the ground.

Nigel Clough said before the start of todays game that "Derby is very close to my family's heart. We have lived in Derby for over 40 years and this is a very special place for all of us"

Of course Derby is a special place for them, so what? Clough is now an employee of Derby (We didn't offer him the job so he didn't have much choice) so singing the praises of their bitter rivals isn't going to go down well there is it? He's a professional. Billy Davies got Derby to a higher position than most of their supporters could imagine. No one in the world would have saved that team from relegation and the Derby board acted far too quickly to oust him. Look what Paul Jewell, a majorly succesful manager did.

Kris Commons our "star" player left us for Derby last season

Paul Smith, Chris Cohen, Lewis McGugan, Jules Bennett and Wes Morgan were all better performances than Kris 'Incosistantcy' Commons

Robert Earnshaw, a total Derby flop, is signed by us for nearly £3m

He was a flop because he wasn't given a chance in a poor, poor team. He has the best goalscoring record ever totalled in this league and performed well before his injury. He's slowly starting to regain fitness now too.

Pride Park is a much louder, more raucous atmosphere than City Ground, with our pathetic A/B block making the only noise.

See attendance explanation earlier.

No.

Ok.... Derby and Forest are similar sized clubs. Now p*ss off back to a Derby forum and celebrate your giant killing win against Man Ure.

Yes. They're the talk of football tonight.

Even Forest fans don't talk about Forest anymore.

I think it's fair to say we're very similar sized clubs. If they had to endure the shite we'd seen and had to compete with another professional league club in the city (often forgotten that one) then I'm not sure their attendances would be so good. Although admittedly they are very impressive.

However, for any fan of any persuasion getting carried away about the superiority of Derby over Nottingham simply read the following:

League Clubs: Nottingham 2 Derby 1
European Cups: Nottingham 2 Derby 0
Arenas & professional ice hockey teams: Nottingham 1 Derby 0
Test Cricket Grounds: Nottingham 1 Derby 0
International Watersports Centres: Nottingham 1 Derby 0
Shopping Centres: Nottingham 2 Derby 1
Bus Stations: Nottingham 2 Derby 0
Castles (kind of): Nottingham 1 Derby 0
Totals: Nottingham 12 Derby 2

OK, a bit daft but categoric! And I honestly did try and think of something they had going for them. They sheep gobblers have little left to bray about other than a couple of extra points in the league and a few extra on the gate. And I for one am more than hopeful that both can be overturned pretty sharpish with a couple of big wins in the future.

Derbys average attendance has been consistently bigger than ours for over 8 years, its not just fallout from the premiership. Its a smaller place with a smaller population - but the fans have been there for them, through thick and thin. I have been to most games home AND away so i feel justified making this argument. The rest of the responses seem fair enough.

And as for us scrapping in League 1, we had around 18/19k turning up at that point, even less next year if we get relegated.

Man City filled Maine Road in League 1 with 30k every single week, gaining promotion on penalites in the play off final!!!

If you go to any country and ask anyone about famous teams, most of them will mention forest.
Forest are like cheddar, derby are like wensleydale. No one out of Britain knows wensleydale

I quite regularly (say, once a month) see members of the public locally in Forest shirts or other related attire.

I think I've seen one lad in a pair of Derby shirts at 5 a side, who I needless to say, kicked to shit.

We're bigger, they may have higher average attendences but our popularity is far further reaching.

Recent appointments and transfers have got me thinking about the strange love/hate symbiotic and almost incestuous relationship between the reds and the rams. There are so many shared names in our histories, Clough, Taylor, Robertson, Gemill, Davies, Camp and even some current no-mark winger whose name escapes me.

We seem to have a relationship that other massive local rivals don't have. how many players do you see moving between Liverpool and Everton for example?

Are Derby and Forest a bit like two brothers who don't speak over some long since forgotten row? You just know that when one of them dies the other will be the most upset at the funeral.....And probably won't be around much longer themselves now....

Think about it. What are Forest without Derby? If there was some football club plague that wiped out all of the football clubs in the world and you had two syringes of the cure, which other club would you save?

I know the answer for me.

We could play the Brian Clough trophy every day!

I will still dance in the street when they go down again though.

and i'm not a derby fan.

If I was I wouldnt know Chris Allen was the fastest man ever to sprint the face of the earth

Paul McGregor was a kick ass rock star who brought the house down with Scot Gemmill at Rock City every Thursday night

Gary Bull gave the Bull family a bad name with his performances for Forest, even though he cost us nothing

Dave Phillips only ever passed the ball backwards, apart from that absolute rocket he scored against Bolton away when we won 4-3 (and I even got on the score sheet!!)

Bernard Allou also worked nights as a bouncer at Essence

Want any more???????

No. Attendance is but one criteria which is not comparable to our own. We have been in League 1 wilderness for 3 years paying OTT prices. When Derby get relegated we'll see if their attendance stays as good.

If it does then I rescind my comment. If not. I win, you lose.

Newcastle have been getting consistantly more people to their games than a lot of clubs around the world but they've won jack shit.

If the size of a club was determined only by their attendances, sure, Derby are probably the bigger club. But they're not as famous as us and haven't won as many trophies either, which is what matters. And at the end of the day, we're both in the same league so whoever is the biggest club doesn't really matter anyway.

I enjoyed those a lot more than the first post, so I'm inclined to say yes. :)

Benny Olson was the only decent US Soccer player in history.

Hugo Porfirio had never seen snow before he came to England.

Garry Parker was wasted on the left.
