Anthony Elanga

From what I watched 2nd half, he was always receiving the ball in a spot where he needed a great touch and a sharp, accurate pass. Not what I’d have considered his strengths when at ours. I’d be willing to bet he plays for a Nuno team again one day…

I dare say it's not been a great move for him

And we miss him in equal measure
He's much better with space in front of him including the outlet to another player. How often do we have that now?

Forest sans Elanga and Wood are the single reason we're 17th this season
Wood probably more so than Elanga, although tail end of last season it was clear that tactic had been found out anyway.

Last season we made hay whilst the sun shone in an unseasonable autumn and winter, metaphorically speaking.

There was no way we had the 7th best squad last season either. We just managed to do well whilst people didn't expect us to.

The sooner people stop thinking about last season as the norm and more thinking about it as the outlier the more realistic the ambiitions are.

We are better than 17th, but we aren't a top 10 side. With the Ange period, we are handicapped a few places lower than we should be

The tactic was "found out" circa gameweek three or four I'd imagine, if not before

The fact was teams just couldn't do anything about it! Same as they couldn't do anything about CHO cutting in and scoring

There's a huge difference between knowing what players are going to do and being able to do anything about what said players are going to do

Everyone knew we'd counter up the wing with Elanga's pace ultimately presenting a chance for Wood to score. they just couldn't stop it

Yep totally agree all that’s said here. Strange I don’t think he’s got the freedom the play to his strengths because of way Newcastle play. Maybe Newcastle thought he’d transform into a more rounded player for them?
Still wish him every success wherever he goes, quality guy which was why he suited Forest.

They signed the wrong player, Hutchinson would've been much closer to the type of winger that suits their style.

It's one of my biggest bug bears when you have a player that's all power and pace and a direct runner - then some dickhead thinks they gentrify them and turn them into some technical player. The same thing happened with Ollie Burke - totally ruined him as a footballer. Players like that do things at a million miles an hour, they make mistakes, bad decisions at times, and are typically inconsistent, but when it works it's spectacular. I honestly don't know why Newcastle signed him.

You are right, I've seen a fair bit of young "Ollie" on his adventures here in Germany, and he is best deployed as a "blunt instrument" of a player, sent out there to just run at opponents, terrifying them with his power and pace, and - in the Bundesliga - he has carved a fine career out of that style of play, and it works.

He's been ineffective at best since coming on. Probably just needs to bag a goal but I wonder how much he suits a team that is on the front foot as much as Newcastle are.
