This one isn't closed until 23:01. They've wanted Elanga for months, they won't just accept one no.

My real thoughts:

1) I like Elanga as a player and if he can improve in all technical areas even just a little bit then he’s a massively handful.

2) He might be slightly one dimensional.

3) Jota Silva could well push him for first choice right wing.

So overall there it’s a no brainer to keep him and reassess next summer.

BUT,

The main reason he’s going nowhere is the message it sends out. We’ve not sold a blatant first teamer without strengthening since Samba and whilst Elanga may well not end up being number one right winger, he’s a key player for the squad.

So he doesn’t leave because that would show others that they can also leave for something better. We are improving as a team/squad/club so any net loss of quality is detrimental to the overall aim.

Elanga stays, and that goes for all first team players unless they are expendable… e.g. Johnson.

It’s not all about the money is it but I have a feeling we won’t be offered that kind of sum again for Elanga. I totally get the statement of intent / Marinakis flex point. And I also get that he’s a good lad and a fabulous influence in the dressing room on the group. But a lot of the time remains frustrating to watch.

Yep that’s a fair observation too. Might have been different if they offered 50m a month ago, giving us time to reinvest etc.

What’s good is that we didn’t allow ourselves to be shafted at the death of the window.

Personally I don't think it was anything to do with how good Elanga might be. Although I'm sure the timing might have been an irritant.

Turning down Newcastle was a statement of intent by the club. We're serious about this.

Regardless of fee, we'd have been mad to accept losing who is probably our third choice striker option given we hadn't bought in another one.

Good on the club, and Elanga is the kind of sort that while he may well have entertained it certainly won't be sulking.
