Andrew Omobamidele

We seem to be developing a habit of picking up CBs from lower division teams from the EFL and selling them off to Europe - Panzo, Omobamidele, now Bindon coming in. We must have identified some data that suggests we can grow a revenue stream by trading these profiles of players.

I'm not sure that's been plan A with any of them to be fair - just how it's panned out with the first two.

I remember both signings being quite late in the respective windows, with a bit of a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ type reaction.

I don’t think either of them were intended as first team starters. That’s my take on it tho

Panzo was quite a promising prospect when we signed him iirc (or was a Bowler type for if we went straight back down) and Omobamidele started quite a few games in 23/24.

Indeed. When Panzo signed, being promoted still felt like a pipe dream - even with our resurgence under Cooper. Similar to how when we signed Omobamidele, we'd just come out of a relegation scrap barely intact - can't have imagined we'd have been playing European football in just a couple of years.

In both cases, the club just outgrew them very quickly. I still feel Omobamidele could be an excellent defender one day, but he's not going to reach that potential sat on our bench.

Thought this was a great signing at the time. Still think there is a very good player in there, circumstances dictate this is now a good move for player and club.
No harm done from our point of view, was worth the risk & we get most of our money back

I think Omobamidele was a bit of an opportunistic signing. Norwich had been touting him at 20m plus and had no takers. Feels like they dropped the price quite late on the window and we felt it was a decent punt.

What is the fee? Similar to what we paid isn’t it? No harm done.

He has a lot of the tools but for me he just lacks that aggression. That intensity to want to defend and get in a physical battle. I like my defenders to f***ing hate conceding and love defending, whereas Omobamidele looked more like he wanted to make everything look easy, like a rolls royce of a defender.

You see a lot of it nowadays with young centre halves. The good ones like Konsa, Guehi etc learn it through experience. AO might too, in time.

Give me Milenkovic screaming any day of the week over that though.

It's the culture difference on display right there. Fans in Eastern Europe won't accept a CB strolling around the gaff with a cigar on. They want them knocking f*ck out of the striker in the afternoon and blowing tanks up at night.

Exactly
At his age he needs to be playing matches which he isn't going to get here.

Had potential and still does - just won't get the minutes here given the quality ahead of him.

Good luck to the guy.

Yep, just hope "luck" evades him a bit on the Conference League if he is joining Strasbourg

He was definitely worth taking a punt on but ultimately was never going to get into the side given he was probably fourth or even fifth choice at centre back, and still in his early twenties he really needs to be first choice somewhere

Hopefully for him he can push on at Strasbourg

With Omobamidele I think he doesn't quite fit with Nuno's CB profile: not aggressive/proactive enough there.

He's apparently done very well on loan, or at least he was doing until the last minute of the season when I think he shipped a pen that cost them Europa league football.

Good luck to the lad - he'll be playing for a decent manager in Rosenior who clearly rates him; he's at the age where he needs to be first choice and loved.

Is the fee 8m or don't we know?

Cost £11m. Being sold for c.£6.5m. Not brilliant by Forest. Could have been worse given they were wanting close to £20m initially.

I'm fairness they may also have paid a loan fee last season as part of the package.
You’d hope so. Plus the fee we’re getting means we break even on the amortised fee yet to pay and his wages are off the books. So we only really paid about £2.2m for that first season he was here, and given at times he was the only defender we had left standing other than Murillo it was probably money well spent.

I believe when Leeds were interested at the same time we wanted 10m - wouldn't be surprised if the total fee wasn't too far off that.

It’s completely unrealistic to expect every player to appreciate in value, especially when the two players we’ve been playing instead of him probably have massively appreciated in value.
Aye, I guess. I'll file him alongside Dennis, O'Brien, Shelvey and Lingard.
