20 year old 6,3 CB currently at Norwich City.

I've tapped a mate of mine up about him and apparently he's fairly quick and has a high ceiling, he thinks he could go on further even if he came to us. He's been capped by Rep Of Ireland several times.

I've seen him a few times for Ireland. He looks a really classy player in the making -- quick, intelligent and good with his feet. Definitely one worth investing in for the future.

Likewise - he reminded me a bit of a young Paul McGrath.

I’m personally expecting this link to show up again soon. May even still be u21 classified. Haven’t checked.

The fee of £20m being touted for this chap seems very steep. Can't see us spending that kind of money on someone who is unlikely to go straight into the starting XI.

We can expect a fair turnaround at CB in the next 12 months. Could have 4 out of contract in 2024. Something like that. McKenna is on the bubble for me. I also wonder if Felipe could do a Lodi and want to be one and done. Felipe played that well maybe he’s getting other offers. Pure speculation on my part, but a top quality CB prospect isn’t the worst investment in the world.....

If we hadn't got a lot of expensive work to do filling other positions, I'd agree. But I don't think we are in a position to spend £20m on a player who isn't going to start most weeks this summer. Its a huge chunk of our budget which would leave us short in other areas of more immediate urgency.

Yeah maybe so. I’m not necessarily beating the drum for this lad specifically.

That said, a good example to refer to would be Colwill. Brighton might have to head towards 40mil if they want him. And they clearly do having been bounced at 30mil already.

Prices escalate very quickly. We have a need for a young premier prospect at centre back. Maybe not right now, but I think in 6-9 months we might well hope we’d gone and got one now.

Might be a lot of money but this is exactly the type of player profile we should be looking at for me. High potential, high re-sale value. See MGW signing for reference.

Difference there though is that MGW was brought in with a key position the starting XI in mind. This lad wouldn't be going straight into the starting XI this season

Can we really afford to spend £20m on a young centre half this summer to act as an understudy to Felipe and Niakhate, given that we still need significant additions elsewhere?

Cooper didn't trust Bade to go into the starting 11- supposedly because of his age/inexperience at this level.

So yeah- we're not spending £20m on a promising youngster for CB.

That's a good point re: Bade. If we weren't going to trust a young player who had done well in France (who then went on to to win the Europa League with Sevilla), I can't imagine us dropping £20m on a young Championship centre back either. And that's before you factor in the fact that we need first team quality additions in numerous other positions this summer (goalkeeper, left back, midfield, left wing, upfront); none of which are going to come cheap.

If we do sign a younger centre back to act as an understudy to Felipe and Niakhate this summer, it'd most likely be a player from Europe for a fraction of the cost of this lad.

By Christmas we might wish we had spent the 20m on a player for now.

Of course we need prospects coming through but we need balance and players who are seasoned and performing well and cohesively together before worrying about gambles on who might be the next big thing if they aren’t ready for first team

Bade might have been the unfortunate victim of circumstance.

He joined on the 1st September, and so would have taken 2-3 weeks to get up to speed. In that timeframe was the collapses vs Bournemouth and Fulham, so it's high chance Cooper's insistence on "experience" was shaped by those results. The next game was Leicester away where we got tonked 4-0, which initiated the change of shape to the 4-4-2 diamond which yielded good results and where the centre backs no longer needed to be ball players, but hard to beat, so Bade's skillset less important. That formation went unchanged for weeks, and would only change again after Bade left the club.

HIs lack of inclusion doesn't necessarily mean Cooper will always want "experience" at the heart of the defence, just possibly that when Bade was looking to stake a claim for a spot, that is what we needed right then, and then he just couldn't break through after because we'd found a winning formula.

Cooper definitely stuck with the old guard too long last season. Not just by not putting Bade in, but even more so leaving Boly on the sidelines for so long.

He played straight away then didn't play for about 2 and a half months - he is quite clearly much better than those that were playing at the time. Boly has made a big difference when he has played, I remember that Southampton game away at their place was one of the best aerial displays from a CB I have seen, he was so good in that game. He did the same in the reverse fixture of the bench too when they were lumping it forward.

Yep Cooper stayed loyal then realised it was going to be the death of him and us.

I appreciate we have several major needs still, and the reluctance to plough money into the CB position, but almost all positions in the squad should be fair game if we have options to improve.

And look at the Danilo contract. 6 years was it. Any young players, at the high end of the potential scale, and/or those we really feel could be here for the long term, are getting extended terms.

No idea if this lad signs, or is even a target. But a player in this mould gets a 5 year deal more than likely, which in itself is good for FFP.

To put a positive spin on it, Boly's good performances may have been due to being given the time he needed to adapt.
He struggled when he was thrown into the team immediately after joining (understandably).
