Advice sought - travelling to Reading by car.

I'm taking the unusual step of going to Reading away by car, and need some advice from folk who've done it before.

My missus is going to drop me off at the ground and go off to see friends with our 4mth old Son (she won't let me subject him to NFFC yet).

We need to travel at a specific time to fit in with his feeds & I don't want to get in any jams, as he'll have been in the car for 2.5hrs from Nottm.

I've heard that you get massive tail backs on the M4 Jn 11 to get to the ground. Can anyone recommend an alternative route so I can get near the ground and the missus won't get stuck?

It took me a couple of minutes to figure out what the title was asking for! It's 'Advice sought'...

As for the advice being sought, no Idea chap, sorry.

Where's the Friends she's going to visit?

I'd recommend not going to the ground but getting her to drop you off in the Town, then get the matchday bus from the Train station.

Then you can have a pint with us lot as the designated away fans pub is the one that's built into the station.

She's meeting up somewhere in Reading (I don't tend to communicate much with her, I find life is easier that way ) so this sounds like a very good plan. Am I best off coming off the M4 (westbound) at the Jnc before the ground then and is it an arse to get to?

In a word yes its an arse. If you come off at junction 10 then you will need to go through the town, i.e. down the A329M to Cemetery Junction then onto the IDR (inner distribution road) then back onto the A33 by way of the one way system. Its do-able but would expect junction 11 to be quicker as through the town you get all the shopping traffic and the one way system isn't the best if you not sure of the way.

Other option is to go up to junction 12 and come down but that again is a bit of an arse.

Depending on where your other half is going in town I would think that the bus is normally the best idea, although it can take a bit of time to get out after the game due to every one else trying the same thing. Another option is If you get her to turn left towards Basingstoke at Junction 10 rather than right to town then there are a number of bus stops there, you could also walk from there in 15 minutes.

Nice one Red in Reading. Will stick with the Jnc 11 plan then.

We're staying down for the night, so not arsed about after. Just don't want it all to go tits up before hand!

How long would you say it'd take to get to the ground from where the queues start approaching jnc 11?

Without sounding a bit too obvious, it depends how early you get there!

If you a good hour ahead of kick off, I reckon it won't be too bad. Thing is, theres not really a 'drop off point' so you're likely to be thrown out onto a duel carriageway. :)

I should also say, that having been to at least one Reading game every season since they've been at the "MadStad", the traffic problems seem to have lessened as fans find their own alternative routes getting in and out and parkingwise.

So the info on here: http://www.footballgroundguide.com/reading/ for example may have been written a few years back.

Plan was to park where the Mcd's is and feed him/change him there whilst surrounded by U Reds. Part One of his indoctrination you see. Will I be able to park okay on this retail park?

My worries arose from the footballgroundguide.com website. I'll be leaving nottm at 1130 to tie in with our lads sleeps, and so will probably be arriving at Jnc 11 on the M4 at 2pm. Had these visions of sitting there in a jam with a crying passenger who's s**t themselves.

And that's just the missus.

Yup, you'll be able to park there although it does get busy. There'll be quite a few traffic folk wandering round there making sure people aren't parking for the just going to the game so make sure you get a receipt from McD's to prove it!

Keep an eye out for anybody with Rice on their backs in the ground and feel free to say hello. We're all pretty friendly.

Apart from Winnits.
