Addressing the goals against column

Hmm, does it read like we're not signing any more defenders or is it just me?

Billy Davies will spend this week fine-tuning his Nottingham Forest players ahead of Saturday's Championship opener at Reading.

The Reds completed their programme of pre-season games at the weekend with an excellent 2-1 home win over Premier League new boys Birmingham City.

Manager Davies was pleased with his side's display but can still see room for improvement.

He said: "I am delighted with the effort of players so far and we have brought in players who can win us matches - but now we have to address the goals against column from last season," he said.

"We have to become a better side from front to back at keeping clean sheets and defending our goal.

"We were very frustrated when we conceded a goal early in the second half against Stoke and we conceded a late goal on Saturday.

"Tiredness was a factor in that. We know we have work to do."

It's the complete opposite of how you have read it

I read it as though Billy were saying "we need to sort out our current defenders". On second reading, you might be right though.

I think we're alright for defenders.

Best not mention any of them by name though, for fear of feeding a 'clique'.

Still another month of the transfer window. It would be ideal if all business was completed by this weekend, but if it isn't we still have plenty of time.

It doesn't mean that all.

He may not have the defence ha wants to start the season with so he is not going to try and motivate his current players by saying " you are alll a bag of s**t and I am going to replace you as soon as we can" , is he?

There's no harm in getting what we have into shape defensively, in case we don't manage to sign another player, which may well be the case.

I think your reading a little to much into it. Theres nothing there to suggest we aren't looking to bring players in still, infact Davies has frequently stated there are gaps in the back four we are actively looking to address, most recently after the Brum game. I can see no reason to expect that this has changed over the weekend.
I don't even think his comments are targeted specifically at the back 4; "We have to become a better side from front to back at keeping clean sheets and defending our goal." would suggest to me that he is simply analysing the whole teams performance and pointing out the areas in which it could be improved.

I don't think there's any right way to read it to be honest.

He said our defence needs to get better, that's a fact. It's common knowledge that he's been trying to improve it with signings, but it's also common knowledge that he's not thus far been able to do so, in which case we might have to turn to our current players. Either scenario is still very possible with a month of transfer window still left.

I thought all our defensive problems were solved when we signed Lee Camp. Are you all telling me there were more deep rooted issues as to why we conceeded so many goals last season?
