A serious question!

No the panel is working fine, as evidenced by the massive improvement in signings since it's inception.

Ah another good old panel thread, this time by the delightful fsor12 who through his posts has shown himself to be a most dignified and pleasant individual.

As a club Nottingham Forest has zero money. None. Zippo. Nein. Similar clubs to ourselves such as Cardiff City, Crystal Palace, Watford are struggling to stay afloat and are on a dreadful downward spiral.

We however are 3rd in the league. We made yet more, serious multi million pound offers for Premier League players and internationals in January. Every single one of our players is a talented athlete with something to offer the squad. We've got a £3m striker ramming them home every week and another £1.5m striker on just as many having a brilliant season. We've got 2 million pound strikers on the bench who can't even get a game, such is the level of our reserves these days. We've got a 25 year old goalkeeper who is realistically an England prospect in a few years. The only two teams in the league who we currently can't quite match are West Brom and Newcastle, the two Premier League boys with parachute payments and Premier League squads.

Yet despite all this incredible, irrefutable evidence that Nottingham Forest is being run incredibly well by a shrewd board, aided by one of the most experienced football minds in England, people continue to piss and moan that Mr. Doughty has the audacity to retain a small amount of management over his own personal fortune which he continues to plough into the club.

Just incredible.

Good post.

Whilst it is apparant the club is in better shape than it has been for years, would you not agree the last few January transfer window have been failings? We must be the only club in the whole football league not to sign anyone in those windows.

Depends what you mean by failings. Didn't someone earlier say the only players Davies went in for we Bale, Pratley Moses and Shorey? How could anyone deem it a failure not to land any of these guys? It's a miracle that out club has even got the intention of bringing this type of player to the club.

Football fans are simply never happy are they. Radio Nottingham reported the figure of transfer fees alone in the last two seasons was £11m. £11m ladies and gentleman in this financial climate, for a team not long out of League One. Why are we not all rejoicing that we've got this security? That we can lure players like Majewski and Earnshaw?

Because people would rather nit-pick and speculate about the smallest little decisions because frankly some people are never happy. No one really knows who's been enquired about, who said yes and no, who failed medicals, who said 'no thanks, I'm a Derby fan.....The level of analysis of football in general is just silly really these days. Everyone knows best and everyone wants more.

Well hear this.

I don't care about what's going off in which window. We're 3rd. All our players are pretty good. We're not in debt. We're not in danger. We might go up. Our owner is a local man, so not Glazer or Munto bollocks for us. That's more than enough for me to be extremely happy with what's going off with Forest and frankly with the level of scrutiny and criticism levelled at Mr. Doughty I think he'd be entitled to throw the towel in and tell a few ungrateful clowns he's had enough, then we'd soon find out how good we've got it at the moment.

It's pretty obvious the window creates a panic and deludes quite a lot of fans into thinking we HAVE to sign someone just because there is a 'window'.

For example, what if we'd rushed in to buy a striker like, say, Akinbiyi, and never got Blackstock in? I think we'd most likely have been back in League 1.

The whole point of the panel is we bring in quality, not quantity. I'm amazed people still haven't grasped the concept of this.

Trouble is Adam i think many people have grasped that concept but it still doesn't take away the fact that it really does slow any process down of signing players at the right time and when they are needed. I am all for the panel to a degree to stop shit being signed but does that mean we don't trust Davis then and his judgement?

Don't get me wrong, I am not criticsing Doughty at all, the amount of money he has put into the club is probably the envy of many other fans. Not to mention the quality players he has bankrolled these last few seasons.

I am also thrilled with how well the season has panned out, being third and in with a real shout of going up is fantastic. Whatever happens this will have a brilliant season.

I wouldn't say it was a failure to land those targets at all, more a failure to identify more realistic targets who would have benefited us and bring them in which could have made the vital difference.

who are these realistic targets who would improve the squad? every one of those signings would have been improvements on what we already have. don't see the point in signing players and hoping they turn out alright. we had that after the sheff utd game in 2003. no sorry mr huckerby, we can't afford you. i know you've been knocking the goals in mr harewood but we'd much rather have average marlon king. what's that? gareth taylor? yes please, he's always been about average at this level.

aim for the best and if you miss it, well at least you tried.

every one of the players we tried to sign were potential premiership quality and there's not many of them to go around at our level and you're not going to sign them without a fight.

I see what you're saying, however, does it really slow any process down? If Billy gives them a list of players, does it take them say 30 minutes to ring up a player's club, or does it take them a week to watch him first before deciding we want to try and buy him... who knows? I don't think anybody here does. Pure speculation.

If it wasn't for the panel, we could have signed Matt Mills for £4 million, Rob Jones for £3 million etc etc which obviously would have been incredibly bad business. Billy might pick out some cracking targets, but at end of the day it's not his money and he has a decent amount of good players to work with already.

If anything, persistantly saying we need new players is potentially damaging to the morale of the current squad.

Our own success has created a problem for fans.

Simply put, if we hadn't rampaged through a 19 game no-loss streak, instead moving up to where we are now over a slightly longer period, no one would have given a second thought to the panel and its apparent failings.

Two seasons ago we were struggling to get out of League One. Last season we thought we'd end up going back to it. Now we are on the brink of the Premiership. There's absolutely no need whatsoever to upset the apple cart.

Be patient boys and girls. We're not Chelsea or Man City or Notts County. We're building. If we don't go up this season, I hope everyone will give the boys the ovation they deserve at the final final whistle and be there in August to cheer on the boys again.

On the upward spiral.

Now we're getting somewhere!

But wouldn't this mean that not getting a left back in was therefore Billy's fault? He's the guy who chooses the players. Surely not?

Great post. I think the vast majority of fans do recognise this and will certainly be giving a standing ovation. I suppose frequenting these forums is masochism in a way. One gets annoyed by the ridiculous negative criticism on here, but it's magnified out of all proportion with the internet soap-box phenomenon.

I really should f*** this place off and get back to just enjoying the game on a saturday. Roast beef and yorkshire every night and twice on sundays, and all that.

I still don't see how people can say the panel 'doesn't work' or that they don't back Billy.

Billy chose his 3 targets for January, he himself has said this on countless occasions, so no panel interference there. Doughty then stumped up some serious cash for the bids. How is that process different to any other club in the league?

Short of having a magic wand, what more could the panel have done?

Is this true? From what I remember Mark Arthur said davies gave them a list of 9 players and the panel then ruled out the other 6 for various reasons.

From what I understood, billy recommended the players to sign and then the panel chose which ones they actually went out and got.

I agree the panels been a positive thing, and the rise in our fortunes and more stable financial position are testament to it.

That said, thier failure in each of the last 2 januarys has been spectacular and has almost cost us dearly on each occassion (if we dont go up, people will doubtlessly blame the AP) but without knowing the full extent of what they do and who they chase- i guess is its unfair to slate them too much.
