A serious question!

If by any chance we lost in the play off final meaning we are in the Championship for another season plus taking in to account all that has gone on with the Aqcuisition committee this season regarding transfers etc would you like to see this panel disbanded once and for all? or what changes would you like to see made? if any!

The panel works in the summer, the last three have been fruitful and have seen quality players brought in. However the last three January's we have signed no-one showing it clearly doesn't work then.

Therefore changes should be made to enable us to be more active in the transfer market then.

I'd like to see the Acquisition Panel continue whatever happens. They've helped make some great signings whilst bringing an end to an era where we'd pay out ridiculous amounts on transfer fees and wages that couldn't be justified. They do need to step up their game during the January Transfer Window though, especially if we need a left back as we dont have one at the club!

Clearly, the lack of activity during any of the January windows shows more about the "Panel" than it does about the ambitions of the club.

If nothing else the panel offers an outlet for reactionary 'supporters' to rail again and perhaps keep them at least vaguely positive in their backing for Billy and the boys.

But that's not helping the club thogh is it?.

People are supporting this Panel by telling us that they are doing a magnificent job in not paying out huge transfer fees and not paying out big wage packets but this is not down to the panel anyway.

Doughty holds the purse strings and he will have the final say - The manager is there to manage so let him manage.

Yes, Doughty foooked up with Platt when he let him have his head and so he should have learnt from that lesson by now, so there is no reason why Billy should not put his recommendations straight to Doughty who will only say "Yes or No"

When the manager feels he needs a player (not for the sake of it) like we’ve needed a LB or cover for a certain position i.e. McKenna then it’s at that time we need them not in a month or two when it’s too late or by the time a committee has vetted them.

If Billy can't get the players he wants (through the panel) and he doesn't get the results who will they sack - THE PANEL or DB?

If there are checks and balances in place to ensure our future is sustainable through sensible acquisition policy (ie, not paying over the odds, not granting ridiculous contracts) then YES, I would say it is VERY MUCH helping the club.

I don't recall you stating at the start of the season that promotion was a prerequisite this season, or even expect (most of us didn't even hope for it), so why the panic now? Our squad is young and small - a few more additions and we can start to challenge again.

Some people just like to have people to blame. Personally, much as I like Billy, I like that he can't be impetuous and spunk money on whoever he wants. He did that at Derby to an extent and signed some utter dross.

It's been nothing but upward progression since the panel system came in. Before it started we were a poor league one team. Now just a few years later we are 3rd in the championship.

People forget that to easily and it get lost in the frustration of a disapointing January. To get rid of the panel when it is doing such a good job would be short termism.

Look at the quality of signings we have made under the panel. The only one I am not 100% happy with is Mcgoldrick. I wouldn't say he was a bad player but he hasn't really justified his price tag yet. He is still young though.

The panel just needs tweaking to react more quickly in January.

I like the panel, it works and stops Billy going out and buying someone like Claude Davies for the sake of it.

And I didn't expect us to be 3rd in the league anyway so a combination of Billy being a good manager and the panel working well to bring in quality is great.

Let's face it whether there it's a "panel" or the owner someone has to decide how much we actually spend on players and what wages we offer. Just because we have a panel do people assume that if there wasn't ND would just spend whatever Billy "told" him to ?

As for the suggestion that the panel works in the summer but not in January we have no evidence of this.

Maybe, just maybe the signings Billy suggested in January were simply not available. Maybe the players or the clubs involved just said NO.
Lest's face it if WBA had come in for say Cohen in January would you have expected us (or the player) to sat "Ok he's yours" ?
OK if we had offered £5 for a 4th div left back we would have got him....is that what you want?

The players we KNOW we were after in January are:
Nicky Shorey - chose to go to a Premier club on huge wages(panels fault ?)
Darren Pratley - belongs to a play-off/promotion rival who said NO(panels fault ?)
Victor Moses - chose to go to a Premier club on massive wages(Panels fault)

Lets be realistic here,it's so easy to vent our frustration at not signing anyone on a body that,I believe, has done a pretty decent job.

And here's Billy's answer to that one.

It cost me my job at Derby, because the new faces I wanted, I did not get.

"I ended up bringing in players who, with the greatest of respect,

were not the answer at that level of the game.

"What happened is that I ended up losing my job because of it.

I'm for the panel too i'm afraid, I suspect without it gunter especially wouldn't be wearing a tricky shirt. Though it does worry me that our club officials spend most of their time posing as posters on vital.....lmao

I still don't see how people can say the panel 'doesn't work' or that they don't back Billy.

Billy chose his 3 targets for January, he himself has said this on countless occasions, so no panel interference there. Doughty then stumped up some serious cash for the bids. How is that process different to any other club in the league?

Short of having a magic wand, what more could the panel have done?

Playing devils advocate to some extent because I agree with you to some extent. They could have had a plan b.

Mark Arthur confirmed on radio nottingham that they chased Shorey, Bale, Moses and Pratley and they didn't come off. He was asked by chippers why no plan b and he didn't really answer the question.

Those where great targets and if they had all come off we would probably already have been promoted but they didn't so it was a failure. Maybe we should have had some more modest targets. Especially for left back.

Thing is though we don't KNOW we didn't have a plan B do we.
Maybe the players in plan B weren't available for whatever reason. Or maybe the players on Plan B would not have been good enough.
It's very easy for fans to glibly say "oh we should have had a plan B" without really thinking about who the plan b players would be.
Not having a go at you here BTW just making a general statement

On deadline day he confirmed on radio nottingham that they only chased those 4 players and no others. When he was asked about a plan b he said that there wasn't one because they like to do homework on players etc.

I just Majewski signed up, a left back and to keep our first choice players at the club. If all of that happens I could take losing in the play offs.

Should the club have the same ambition as the fans?

That's not a fair criticism. We've been one of the biggest spenders for the last two seasons. Brought big players like Earnie, Gunter and Blackstock. All expensive players.

When you look at the targets we had they were all premiership quality and decent bids were made. If anything we've had too much ambition chasing players like Bale and Shorey who are good players in the league above.

Er, apart from last January, where we didn't pay over the odds for ok players and ended up bringing in the likes of Blackstock and Gunter on loan instead, who we've subsequently signed for very reasonable fees.

But no, let's get rid of the panel. Let's do a Pompey and sign mediocre players on huge wages who don't give a shit about the club, let's end up back in League 1. I'm sure nobody will mind, because at least the panel will be gone.

Unfortunately the club don't live in a fantasy land where we can sign anonymous superstar players who will turn our fortunes round in an instance for any fee and any wages.
