A question about a Reading pub

If you turn sharp left when you come out of the train station & proceed a short distance down Forbury Rd, what's the name of the first pub you come to on the other side of the road? I remember you have to go up a small flight of stairs, the doorway was on the LHS of the pub, and there was a rather odd orderly queue for the bar, but can't remember the name.

It's good for food, and I want to meet some friends here who are flying in from Boston (not Lincs) for the game.

Ideas?

That was the Firkin - it is now The Oakford Social Club.

And yes, it is quite good as Reading pubs go but pricey!

Agree ok but pricey and only servers "Premium" Beer, no Fosters or 1664 just Star / Peroni type drinks and white beer. I think when the Football is on you also have to prove that you are a local resident in order to be let in, certainly they won't let you in with colours.

Have never tried the food so can't comment on that.

Don't do colours, don't do cooking lager and will have a local with me.

Perfect antidote to 1 1/2hrs of screaming at Lewis to pass the f**king ball.

Thanks for your help Tutts & RR

None of Reading town centre does colours - even Reading ones!

I'm sure I've told the story once of how a friend of mine, after Reading had got promoted, wasn''t allowed into a Weatherspoons because he had a Reading scarf in his bag (which they searched!)

Don't worry Liatroim - stand of the steps of the Oakford and we'll give you a wave from the scummy Three Guineas!

I'll doff my cap to you dear boy. Indeed, if I have a few spare pennies, I'll scatter them on the floor outside for all you poor peasants to fight over as I make my way over to my chauffeured limo parked on double yellows next that awful MadSki public transport service (not that I deal in coins - notes only for my type).

We got into a pub 5 minutes from the station without any problems. We took left when we got out of the station, to the end of that street, and then left again. Don't remember the name of it though. There were a couple of Forest shirts in there, and some Reading as well...

I had my Forest shirt in my bag and they let me into Reflex after the game!

The Three Guineas is shocking- best to be avoided.

Last season we drank pre and post match in The Nags Head which also did a bus run to the ground for £3ish return. Home fans were a decent bunch and had some great banter with them. The beer was excellent with a good selection available. I recommend it big time. :)

Can you not hang around Kings Cross for as long as possible and go in the Flying Scottsman ? lol

Personally found the Three Guineas perfect for our needs last season!

It was good before the match,, but after the match dont you remember that Chelsea fan kicking off in front of us when the Rugby was on? The day kind of lost the vibe from there

I'm glad you did! i ended up forking out extra for a train ticket home cos the Foghorn didnt want a night out as planned,, cost me a fortune that day did, and completely took any joy out of it :(

As a result i'm a little cautious about what this weekends trip has to offer

Well what have you planned for your train tickets?

Nothing yet. Last time i paid to come home on the sunday as it was cheaper than open return but obviously that was no good in the end. To top it off i was put on a rail replacement coach and so took me a while before i made it home, completely sober! I'm really not sure what to do about saturday
