A Full Back Who Hasn't Played For 10 Months?

I don't know so I am not going to guess (Murphy sounds like a good shot though from the guy above).

However I would say that the fact Davies has told us about it means that particular enquiry is not happening - he has said how hard it is already so he won't risk losing a deal that he wants by putting any clues out

I was interested to read the article from Davies and the salaries etc:

I do know that one of the first players on the list Billy put forward much earlier in the season was Enrique at Newcastle who was crossed off by the panel almost as quickly as he was put on it (based on wages of £50k plus per week)

Bale when he looked out of favour at Spurs was being lined up with Forest hoping to pay him £12.5k per week which was a significant drop on his existing wages (obviously another deal dead and buried due to the guy getting back in favour)

And Shorey I mentioned elsewhere was on £28k per week at Villa but Forest were only paying £11k of that whilst we got him back in the limelight and playing well again !!

So I know that wages of £12kish don't scare off the panel but anything much higher than that up until now most certainly do

For sure Forest would be prepared to pay £10 to £15k per week for a good left back longer term however Davies appears to be rasing the question of paying significantly more than that short term

I get the feeling most of us would say pay the extra til the end of the season and go for it

I'd say it is from Bouma, Ball, Murphy and if it is Ball maybe that was why there were behind closed door friendlies. Ball has been out a while but did have a short spell at a Prem Club trying to earn a deal, I forget which one, also seem to remember he was linked and or training at County.BD seems to split the 'not played for 10 months' in one catergory and Prem player on 40k another. If it were Ball and he is fit then he would be a decent guy to have.

Bouma and Murphy are both playing in reserves. Talk on Villa site quotes O'Neil as saying he is not quite there yet but hoping to be involved for run in. Murphy has played reserves recently.

Bouma would be on about £40k I'd imagine. He was an established international prior to his injury.

Murphy would easily be within our wage budget and I'd imagine that Ball wouldn't command massive wages anymore.

Are we allowed to sign people on free transfers now still?

The most likely of the three would be Murphy, in my opinion.

If Ball was fit and able, I'm pretty certain someone would have at least offered him a trial.

Let's write him off for now.

Murphy is the most likely.

Ball clearly doesn't want a new club; Portsmouth and Notts County have shown interest earlier in the season but he hasn't even gone on trial at those clubs.

Murphy is a realistic signing, but how good he will be after being out for so long is questionable.

To be fair, if it's true that Pompy offered a trial he probably didn't want it because of the same headlines we have all been reading.

Regarding Notts, he may not have been interested in the circus that has followed them all season let alone the division they are in.

Get Mauritz Volz in. Even if it's just for the comedy factor.

With great RELUCTANCE, I'd have to say there would be high RESISTANCE to this signing.

Not sure he's CURRENTly available, and even if he is, a work permit could prove an insurmountible IMPEDANCE.

All I have to do now is work the AMPersand symbol into this post & we have a winner....

If he wanted a new club, playing for Pompey in the Premiership, especially at the start of the season when their woes were not so apparant would not have been a bad thing.

There's no way he'd have been fit at the start of the season.

He had an operation on his patella tendon in January and was going to be laid-off for 10-12 months. That's a return of November at the earliest. Pompey were very much f**ked by then!

There's a potential difference between having Volz and having a makeweight full back

He's not very well grounded though, still unlike some other reported targets he wasn't arrested for assault and battery.
