7 man transfer committee.......

am i the only one who thinks its a good thing?

our loan signings have been great, and im guessing pleat had something to do with getting gunter.

some guy on radio nottingham was just saying billy should have ALL the power...

i think this is wrong. His transfer record was pretty poor at derby....

I think it's fekkin brilliant. Loads of our fans are down on it but to be honest they don't know what they're on about. The majority of signings we've made in recent years have been pretty solid for our level in my opinion.

Most importantly though it stops the club getting shafted. Gone are the days of muppets like Platt financially ruining the club by buying clapped out useless Italians, neither are we getting held to ransom as a 'big club' and paying over the odds only for it to cost us like it has done many other teams. I'd rather we never end up in the kind of financial dire straits that Leeds and Southmapton have gotten into, in fact all these rumours of us spending £20mil to build a Premiership ready team actually worry me more than they excite me at present. Lets not gamble the clubs future for the short term, slow and steady wins the race and all that! :p

It shall be judged by the results. In January it clearly hindered us, although subsequent loan signings were excellent.

Come the start of next season we shall be able to answer this question.

I think Calderwood was a bit too much of a wet lettuce to deal with a committee situation, I think Billy will be better at ensuring his views and requirements are understood by the rest of the committee.

They've definitely had some benefits.

They also didn't strengthen our defence in preparation for this season.

The 'committee' has signed duds Andrew Cole, Lee Martin, Carl Fletcher, Iain Turner, Neil Lennon, Matt Lockwood and Arron Davies.

No system is fool proof.

Name me a Manager who hasn't signed a few bad players.

The way I look at is. The Manager has to be given a wage/transfer budget to use as he sees fit. He then will be judged on results. If you don't trust the Manager to spend said funds correctly then don't appoint him.

Mr Brian Clough signed quite a few.

In all honesty based on our defensive record in the promotion season it shouldn't be a suprise that we decided to spend elsewhere as a priority. I think at the time many of us were more or less happy with the defence aside from at RB.

im guessing thats due to calderwood more than anything as he didnt feel he needed one

im guessing it works like this....obviously more complicated tho.

'hi, i need a new left back'

'ok we'll get onto it'

they return with a selection who are available

That's a pretty fundamental part of defence though! I would've preferred to replace Bennett and have a serious contender for centreback alongside Wes/Wilson (putting myself back in 'start of season' frame of mind).

I must admit I had written off Brecks and underestimated the contribution he would later make to steadying the ship.

All managers make bad decisions from time to time regarding signings. Its the ones that realise they have made the mistakes and learn from them that become good managers

I hope that Billy doesn't get too slated for us not getting promoted next season. We need to build on the squad we have now and then the season after (2010/11) start to look at pushing upwards to the Premiership

I really don't want to end up doing a Derby and get there too soon and be humiliated week in week out. However, if we sign the right players in the close season and add to what is no doubt lacking in the January window, I see no reason why we can't push for a top 6 finish. Wouldn't want to get promoted too soon as it'd put us back to square one!

Indeed, far too soon for thinking about promotion. Consolidation is the name of the game.

I see what you're saying there, but this very system got us promoted from League One, then kept us in the Championship. I can see why it's controversial because it appears one of those situations like at Newcastle or Chelsea where players are thrust on managers who don't want them. However I just don't think that's what's going on here, it's simply a bit of help and a more hands on role from a board who have been often shafted and lumbered with expensive shite players, and so long as Billy can live with it I think it's a worthwhile process.

It's a good thing because it stops clowns like Platt spending all our money on shite players.

It seems to work okay in the summer, so we should be okay. Especially as Davies has made it clear that we need an adequately sized squad.

The main problem with the squad this season is that there is no strength in depth, we need to sign more than what we let go this summer with maybe a few free signings on the cards to add more depth to a very thin squad.

The million dollar question is:
"Would the Forest board financially back the club back in the Prem to the same extent as say Everton & Villa boards do?"

Forest is a club that can benchmark itself, and be sustainable, against the upper Prem clubs like Everton, Villa & Spurs - but will the money be made available?

Out of interest, do you know what Everton's net spend is over say 3, 5 and 7 years?

I don't think it will be too high, they spent £14m on Screech and about £4m on Jagielka, a fair chunk on Yakubu and Lescott but these were all spread out over a period and players were also sold in that time. They've picked up a lot of bargains for what they have like Howard, Arteta & Neville. They've also used their youth system to good effect.

Good point mate! Nothing we should not be able to emulate though with the right manager and owners?

Everton are a great example to other clubs of what you can do if you run yourself well. Shame it's only 5th though, I think if they or Villa can break the top 4 monopoly it'll open up a little like in Spain but doesn't look too likely any time soon.

He also occasionally turned them into great players who then went s**t again when they left for pastures new. Unfortunately there were also quite a few duds that he never got going - but he's allowed to make a few mistakes!!

I honestly don't think there is such a thing as too soon. It's how you deal with promotion that matters. As long as you don't waste money, there are untold riches for promoted clubs. Better to go up and spend nothing and come straight back down (but with a war-chest for the next season of about £30 million) than to go up and spend inadequately (any money spent then will be invariably wasted). This is where the skills/talents of the club management comes in. Hitting the right balance. Having said all that, there are several issues...............
could we possibly make all the whole-sale team changes necessary to get us up?
if we fail to go up soon, would we lose all the young players who might be useful in the prem - one or two could make it!
