Old Billy Davies up to his old tricks again lollol

Three years ago Davies took Derby to the top flight via the play-offs but, with his hands tied by a lack of investment, he quit after winning just six points in 14 games. And he warned Newcastle they need to splash out if they are to survive and compete at the top level.

‘They’ll be facing a very difficult task,’ he said. ‘When Derby went up, Tottenham were a very good Premier League side and they spent £50m on top of what they had.

'Newcastle are different from other clubs who’ve been promoted because of where they come from. They’re already sitting here with a budget that exceeds X amount, with a squad depth that has huge experience. But they still need to spend and, as a greedy manager, I think at least £40m for the first window and £20m for the second.

He loves it!

Newcastle won't spend half of that but they will not need to. They will still be better than half the shite that currently occupies the bottom half of the Prem with the squad they have now.

They have good Championship players, most not proven in the Prem, a season of strugling I think.

Considering how Newcastle were relegated with the same side as they have now plus the likes of Shay Given, Michael Owen, Damien Duff and Obafemi Martins available to them for significant parts of the season I don't think Davies is far off the mark here.

John Robertson
Yeah but with a decent manager and without the turmoil at the top they'd have finished mid table with that squad.

On a serious point, and the one i intended to make the point of, apart from King Billys spool ,before our now, infamous sticky away patch we were truly in touch with Newcastle Utd in with a serious chance of going up top two.
Now BD has stated all along we are not ready both in infastrucuture ,squad size or depth etc etc etc.
Now i feel, i know what BD thinks we need to 'compete' in the Premiership how much would we have to spend if we got promoted?????

I dont believe anywhere near 40 million nevermind 60 million so whats your estimate and what do you believe Nigel Doughty would be willing to put up to see his Nottingham Forest compete and survive in the Premiership??

A once famous quote from ND was "If you want to win and you want to compete, it costs money"

but at what price in modern day football can a newly promoted side compete and survive ?

Billy could do it on 10 million if you ask me.

Thoughts?

I don't think £10 million would suffice at all. Primarily we'd need three top quality players that are proven at Premiership level to make up the spine of the team (by that I mean a striker, a midfielder and a defender - hopefully Nicky Shorey!) as I think Lee Camp has the quality to be a Premiership number one. I think for those three alone we'd be looking at a minimum of £10 million. Quality rather than quantity would need to be our priority rather than a contingent of mediocrity similar to that which we ended up with in the 1998/99 season.

We'd then need to strengthen the squad to allow for injuries which, to me, demonstrates that the amount required would greatly exceed £10 million. I think you'd need to double that.

At "An Audience With...Billy Davies" at the Approach late last year, BD casually dropped the answer into the conversation.

Asked "how much would need to be spent", he answered (without flinching or missing a beat, I add) £30 million in the first transfer window, and £20 million in the second.

£50m as casually as you or I would say "loaf of bread and a pint of milk"...

Newcastle have had too many Championship standard players playing for them whilst they were in the Prem.

Billy isn't too far off the mark here.

No wonder my post count..
I think the geordies will manage a good run next season. Relegation last season came around mainly because no f***er gave a shit. Hughton has magically switched this right around, kept the majority of the prem players and got them all working together.

Billy has got so much stuff spot on that you really can't argue with what he is saying there

They'll need to spend a lot - Hughton has made some excellent signings this season, but not for the Premiership. Routledge has shown countless times that he's not good enough to make the step up.

They also don't have a 15-20 goal a season striker for the Premiership - they cost quite a bit of money. They'll also need a very good defensive midfielder because they won't be able to play with four attack-minded players in midfield next season. Danny Simpson isn't good enough either, so I reckon a right-back is also needed.

So I make that:

One right back - £4m?
One winger - £5m?
One defensive midfielder - £5m?
One striker - £8-10m?

That's £22m already. Goalscorers are so expensive - Kevin Doyle cost Wolves £6m from Reading.

When you look at the squad and pick out the solid Prem quality players there is

Harper
Enrique
Taylor
Collucini
Jonas
Guthrie
Nolan
Barton

Thats the basis of a solid team but there is nothing up front and strikers are the most important and most expensive part of a team. An excellent prem striker is at least 10 million and you can't do without one as West Ham found out this year.

They should sign one real good striker for about £15-20m and another that is decent but cheaper like Doyle or Beattie for support/cover.

A right winger too. With the wages they pay they should be ringing Joe Cole's agent as we speak.

They could do with an experienced right back so just those 3 players takes them up to 30-40million.

They'll be desperate for a defensive midfielder next season. What they have now is a team full of attacking players.

Better make that £50m in the first transfer window Billy! lol

Well we are never going to spend even half of that so we may as well give up now.

All conjecture and nonsense. How much did Wolves spend, who may well now stay up? And their squad is still arguably no better than Newcastle's current squad.

I'd imagine they need a top rate striker or two, but they're got top Premiership quality throughout. I'd argue that with Nolan, Barton, Colocini, Gutierrez, Enrique they can concentrate that 60m on fewer players and hence sign even better players and be a real force next year.

I seem to remember most of those players being regulars in the team that got relegated last season.

People like Collucini and Enrique have crumbled under pressure from better teams, they've not been tested in the CCC because most teams struggle to cope with their midfield strength, fitness and experience, which won't be the case in the Premiership.

They might be excellent for the CCC, but unless they spent HUGE and bring in very good quality players, they'll be battling relegation again.

The major factor regarding Newcastle's required expenditure is the fact that they owe an eye-watering £100 million AND needed another £15 million from Ashley to keep them going this season. I doubt Ashley will allow all the possible Sky money to be spent and realistically will want some of his money back. On the other hand, when we go up, we will probably be given £20 - £25 million by ND. We'll need it, but it should be enough to keep us up at least.
Things are going to change in football - European FA is proposing that clubs can only spend what they earn ie no sugar-daddies. Could affect Chelsea, Fulham, Man City, etc. Also, the plan is not to let clubs compete if they've got huge debts. Note this Newcastle, Liverpool, Man Utd, Hull City, Portsmouth, etc. Also, I think that the Sky bonanza won't last for ever. To be successful, we need to plan carefully to make us a self-sustaining club.
Personally, I believe we need a larger-capacity ground to help us cash in and the best academy in the country. (NO MORE DEBATE ON A MOVE FROM THE CG PLEASE!).
BTW - I guess we've only got about 5 players who as part of a much larger squad would cut it in the Prem. Camp, Gunt, Wilson, Cohen, McCleary. Thought I'd stir it up a bit. Wot no Raddy? Wot no Wes? Wot no Dex? Wot no Earnie? etc etc.

I think McLeary would do better in the Prem.
Raddy, Camp, Gunter and Wes are the only other I can see coping. Cohens first touch is too poor and he doesnt have the pace to make up for it.
Dex is too weak to be a target man, too slow to play off the shoulder, doesnt win enough headers and doesnt finish enough chances for the Prem.
Earnie would still get 10 goals if he played enough I tihnk.
