1977-78 Season

A Greek sports site had an article today, about Forest's matches with AEK Athens in 1978, including videos.

The only memorable details (which you may already know, but I didn't) are that Forest travelled to Athens on a charter flight (extremely rare in those days) and that Clough insisted that the team should stay in a hotel by the sea because the sun would be good for his players, and indeed you lodged at the Asteras Hotel at Vouliagmeni, one of the most posh resorts back then (and now as well).

In the game at the CG I like the bit, right at the end, where Jimmy Gordon squeezes out his sponge and empties his bucket; all over for another match.

We do put Clough on a pedestal because what he achieved at our club.

But that 78/79 Euro campaign was truly revolutionary in football managment terms. The marginal revolution as a prototype.

The fun thing for me about that period is that it was so unexpected, I thought it was going to end at any moment.

That sounds like the complete opposite of the hostel that I and my friends stayed in for the two nights we were in Athens for that game. Not that it spoilt our visit to the city.
