Chris Wootton went about things in the wrong manner, although it's difficult to refute his opinion that Clough was no longer capable of doing the job - and that the extent of his spiralling health issues and drinking were being 'swept under the carpet' by a pathetic board at the time.

Of course, because we all rightly revere Clough we readily accepted the demonising of Wootton, certainly I know I did at the time.

However, he was right. Clough wasn't fit to do the job any more - and the current board were content to sit on their gravy train and dutifully ignore what was presumably pretty obvious, much like the stalwarts Clough surrounded himself with at the club turned a blind eye.

That relegation could potentially have been avoided, and Clough could have got the help he needed off the field too, and potentially enjoyed a longer retirement.

Of course, that's pure conjecture - however, I think it's too easy for us to start slating Wootton because he was one amongst many who actually tried to do what he felt was right for the club, whilst the others sat idly by and let us slide to the beginnings of the oblivion in which we still find ourselves.

of course Cloughie was in a mess but theres no need to release stories to the press about him to get him out. I think after all Cloughie did for us he deserved a bit more respect, and should have been given the chance to go with some dignity.

Hence the first eight words of my post ;)

Don't forget the media can bend words to say things the utterer didn't intend.

"DIRECTOR SLAMS FOOTBALL LEGEND" makes a much better headline than "LONE DIRECTOR STANDS FIRM AGAINST A BOARD INTENT ON IGNORING THE PROBLEMS AT FOOTBALL CLUB"

Not least because it is punchier, but you get what I mean lol

Chris Wooton was elected back on the board once Cloughie left, Hewas the top body in building the new Trent End. As he was a shareholder at the contruction company Taylor Woodrow who built the Trent End.

hmmm most of the time - he does tend to be right a bit too often though. At least I think he is, he's very convincing either way. If he's wriong, I don't want to be right.

I think the Wootton episode was the spur for Clough's rose tinted view of Derby County FC.

If he'd been allowed to leave us under his own steam I doubt he'd have harboured such residual bitterness until his death and Derby fans wouldn't feel so compelled to claim him as theirs.

If that is true, then it reflects poorly on Clough, in my opinion.

We can only speculate as to his state of mind around this time, but he was on a pretty rapid decline, and knowing his bullishness even in his prime, I don't think we could rely on him to leave under his own steam.

I think it certainly caused resentment towards the people in charge of the club from both Clough and his family, but that doesn't extend to the club itself, nor the supporters.

As for the continued 'ownership' issue, I think in the case of Brian Clough it is safe to say that he owned both Derby and Nottingham, and neither owned him.

The sorry Clough episode should have been avoided. I'm sure that he could have been eased out in a way which allowed him to retain his dignity. We loved Clough the manager probably more than we loved Clough the man. However, all the crap within the club could have been kept behind closed doors.

When we were relegated at the end of that season, we were still a strong club which needed picking up by its bootstraps. This was proved by our immediate return to the top flight. It was AFTER this time that the true rot set in and for that we must blame some of the back-room goings-on (or not goings-on) which took place.

I am so unbelievably angry that my once-proud club are struggling like this. If we avoid relegation, I think things will be better - a new era.

Clough was massive; he gave us a chance to set ourselves up as a premiership fixture and someone threw it away by apalling management at the top. Someone tried to say on this forum that we basically punched above our weight - I say - 'RUBBISH'. We had an opportunity because of the great man to stay at the top and blew it. RIP Cloughie - let's hope not RIP Forest.
