Comparing the play off team of 02/03 with the current squad, what would your dream squad be?

I'd go for;

Camp

Gunter Dawson Morgan Brennan

Anderson Mcgugan Cohen Reid

Harewood Johnson

Subs; Ward, Walker, Hjelde, Mckenna, Lester, Earnshaw, Blackstock

I'd have Gareth Williams (of that year, and nothing he has done in the game since) in ahead of McGugan. I think him and Cohen could firm a nice little partnership, with Cohen doing the hard yards and Williams spraying it about.

I'd also have Earnshaw ahead of Johnson, as I believe they are similar types of player but Earnshaw is better and would score just as many goals, if not more, given those sort of chances. Harewood would be a good foil for the amount of work he puts in.

The rest of the team is about spot on for me.

yeh i agree with all of the team, except id have blackstock swapped for Johnson up front. otherwise great team, we'd be sure of promotion :)

Earnie for Johnson and Des for Morgan. Sorry people but Morgan wouldnt cut it for me and even if Des might og been on the decline sentimental value would easily have him in there over "mr ill try and header a ball away on the penalty spot when it 5cm's off the floor" although I guess there is always the chance that Des could slice it in his own net but Morgan could deflect any shot in from anywhere. It could go on forever ;D

Louis-Jean Dawson Walker Gunter

McKenna

Majewski Reid Tyson

Harewood Earnshaw

Subs; Ward, Morgan, Cohen, McGugan, Williams, Johnson, Blackstock

I think...

Good question though. Do you think the 02/03 side would beat the current side?

I'd only have Dawson, Brennan and Reid to start over what we've currently got. Blimey. We've come a long way

No our current team will lose 1-0 to a deflected goal off Wes

Depends who was at home ;D

Brennan has to be in as left back, no question btw.

Was Wes in the 02/03 squad? He must be our current longest serving player even if not.

I think he came into regular first team reckoning a season later from memory.

He is our longest serving player, though.

Thought it might've been a little too early for him. Strange though to think that 6 years on, it's a completely different team.

I remember idolising DJ when I was a real young 'un and thinking that going to Forest just wouldn't be the same while he was injured. It didn't really matter one bit in the end!

It's laughable that Morgan is getting in any of these sides. Des and Dawson were perfect together - we saw the best of Dawson with Walker guiding him along. Personally, I think very few of the current side would make the 02/03 side. They were better footballers playing a superior style of football and were capable of destroying sides on their day. That side went to Portman Road and thrilled in one of the most wonderful matches ever seen, against a talented Ipswich side themselves on the cusp of the play-offs (that killed off their chances). In contrast, this side managed to limp to a dour, unexpressive draw against the worst Ipswich side of the past ten years.

Ward

Louis-Jean
Brennan
Walker
Dawson

Anderson
Reid
Scimeca
Cohen

Harewood
Earnshaw

By the way, I'm not counting loanees like Huckerby, or someone like Prutton who left midway through that season. Louis-Jean vs Gunter was probably the hardest match-up to decide, but I went with Mathieu 'cause of personal favouritism.

I wouldn't have Ward in goal, but other than that it's hard to disagree there.

I heard reports that we played nice flowing football against Ipswich on tuesday! Unlucky not to get the win in the end

The only players in contention for that team now are probably Camp and Majewski, and possibly Earnshaw. Cohen is a workhorse, I'll give him that, but ability wise he's nowhere near Williams or Scimeca. Earnshaw is probably very similar to Johnson, however Johnson and Harewood's partnership was sooo good that probably even he wouldn't command a place in the starting line up.

Aaah the days of Matty Louis-Jean and Jim Brennan. Good times :(

I think Williams and Scimeca were two players who had their best season in 02/03 without ever actually being good footballers. That's not to say that either player lacked talent, but it very rarely came together while they were at Forest, and certainly hasn't shown itself since. It's easy to dismiss Cohen as a work-horse, but in a worse team in a division that is pretty strong, he strung some assists together last season and performed with consistency throughout the season. He is probably the sort of player our midfield was missing under Paul Hart. There was lots of talent there but no-one, once Prutton was sold, who would really put themselves about. I didn't rate Williams highly at all though, he was a pretty boy in the middle of the park, your prototype footballer. Lee Martin reminded me of him a lot. The sort of footballers who could be good players if they put their soul into it, but never will.
