If you sign Freuler, Sow and Aouar as is claimed by press reports you will have 9 players who can play in midfield, 10 if one includes Hammond who still is part of the first team: Colback, Yates, Cafú, Hammond / Kouyaté, O'Brien, Mangala, Freuler (?), Sow (?), Aouar (?). Even if you let Cafú go, disregard Hammond, consider Colback primarily a LB, and Aouar primarily an AM, that's still 6 players for 2 positions. That's the definition of an overkill (or nouveau riche territory).
It does look a lot.

We'll see what the plan is soon enough, but I think it will be shaped by two things: 5 subs from a bench of 9; and different approaches to the midfield in home and away games.

Yeah it isn't overspend, it's heading quickly towards too many cooks territory though. The plan seemed focused and clear at the start of summer but this last week has seemed like we're just throwing bids out and seeing what lands. It'll be interesting to see what our 25 man squad looks like come the end of the window.

I only see issues at the wingback slots?
At the CB slots as well, in my opinion: McKenna, Niakhaté, Cook, Worrall, that's four senior players for three positions, plus Mbe Soh, who's completely unproven at this level. Not a skeleton crew, but one more would probably not hurt.

Kouyate played most of the 20/21 season at CB for Crystal Palace, I could see him being used there with the amount of CMs we still seem to be targeting.

Sauce salad?
As I see the central defense we have two fir each slot. Wingbacks we don't, though partly due to injury and uncertainty about Biancone.

The worry is FFP, but experience tells me we shouldn't be worried GBG?
Why should you? You're getting something like a gazillion of pounds in the Premier, and as I've repeatedly said, it was never EM's method to overspend (his stated goal when he took us over in 2010 was that the owner should not chip in; he failed, mostly because of his own mistakes, but the stated goal was a worthy one). You should worry about ffp if the transfers underperform and need to be replaced.

Yeah, that's my point - others are worried about ffp, but I don't think our Mgmt would allow it. It's about what happens if relegated, but I think they have that covered with some of the spendier deals we've made.

They just showed a graphic on Sky Sports build-up.

It showed every promoted team for last 4 seasons and how many players they bought on going up

The lowest was 12, highest was 14 which was a joint 14 between us and Norwich.

So it goes to show, it's how it happens.

My worry - but it is what it is - that there is a correlation between large squad turnover and relegation. But let's face that when we get to it.

the team v Newcastle barely resembled the side at wembley, in about 4 games time it will be overhauled again, that’s the one we need to hit the ground running. A few points pinched in the first half dozen matches would be great though!

I can't keep up with all these rumoured bids/ signings, lol.

I know we need more depth to compete in a PL season, but when i look at that match we just won, my first thought is that the likes of Lo'b and Toff were brilliant and I'd not want to see them sidelined with minimal minutes.

We need to be careful now. With Dennis / Frueler / Kouyate signings the squad is starting to look solid , but too many more non-targeted signings starts to become unwieldy imo.

I thought todays game illustrated exactly why we need those signings.
It was played at a million miles an hour and the technical level was very high so its wasn't just harem scarem football.
At that pace there has to be rotation-players will be knackered and if you push them repeatedly beyond their physiological limits as the season goes on there will be injuries not to mention errors that at this level will cost us.

Look at the bench today GBG.

People from outside and even some inside don't understand the task at hand. We have signed loads of players and are still miles short.

We have gone in the first two games with no option but to select the starting 11 and limp through with 1 or 2 subs.

We need players. Just a few injuries will make us even weaker. We have a world class manager, we would be insane to give him a squad that cannot compete and prove that he is a superior manager to others.

I understand that; and I don't expect to see Hammond and Cafú on the bench again. But there's a limit of potential starters you can have for the same position. What will you do if you sign all three midfielders you're supposedly close to? At least two will not even be on the bench. And I'm not talking about Colback, Hammond and Cafú, I'm talking about multi-million dollar transfers.

Edit: I hadn't seen the Sow transfer is off when I wrote this.

Even still we need 11 starters and 11 players who can push to start. We need competition and the middle of the pitch is the most important for how we play.

People say we are doing a Fulham when they would rather we did a Norwich.

f*** em, we are doing a Nottingham Forest.

Interesting take on our midfielders but consider these things.
  • We now have a match-day squad of 20. That's arguably room for 3 midfielders on the bench.
  • Different games are going to call for different kinds of players. For example, West Ham, the way they play would have been a Yates kind of game. He'd have loved the physicality.
  • Players will sadly get injured.
  • Players will lose form.
  • Next Man Up isn't just a buzz phrase for interviews, it's the mentality of the team. You have to fight to get the shirt and fight to keep it.
Look at Lingard for example. If Aouar comes in, then he's not just fighting for a new contract somewhere else next year, he's fighting for his place and he cannot let his standards drop.
