Be interesting to see how this pans out. There's still big questions on whether he's can do it at Prem level.
Well he's definitely too good for the Championship. From what I've seen he's definitely good enough, in fact I'd go as far as to say he could be involved with England in a few years if he can get regular game time in the Premier League.

He didn't exactly do much against Leeds apparently...

A fairly timid and quiet display from Gibbs-White. He improved in the second half but throughout the game he struggled to make an impact. 5/10

Anonymous in the early stages of the game. While the other attack minded players combined to good effect, Gibbs-White struggled to make a positive impression. He brightened up a little towards the end of the half and was much more imposing in the second. 6/10

What were the reviews for BJ like?

Sal makes a good point about the money: if EM he’s the dosh why do we fans care whether he splashed out £30m, £40m, or £50m? It’s not coming out of our wallets is it?

However, I think we should care, because EM might be funding it, but is our club! The reputation of our club reflects on us fans, and if we see a 22-year old with no real track record at this level bought for a ridiculous (even by Prem standards) amount of money, it will be reflected in our reputation.

Furthermore, if we are relegated at the end of this season, we may have parachute money, but our ability to comply with FFP back in the Championship may be made more difficult.

And should EM fall out of love with Forest, and English football, our club (OUR CLUB) could well be doing a Direby in 3 years time.

Personally, I would rather see £40m invested in really good, strong, powerful midfield general, and a decent centre-forward who could receive the ball, and hold on to it before laying it off for the midfield to capitalise on it.

We have a mountain to climb and so much is at stake. If MGW is the man then great. The risk is that, like Johnno, MGW is going to need time to acclimatise and raise his game to the level needed for us to survive this season. With only 37 games left, every game is vitally important.

If he got anything more than a 2 out of 10 it's a lie
Harsh, but also not too harsh!

Johnno got virtually no service, so getting into the game was tough. When he did get the ball played up to him it was generally a long hoof. That said, he kept on trying first-touch flicks, which just didn’t work.

He had 1 full season in the Championship, and that was a massive step up for him - a raw talent but only 20 years old.

He now has to make an even bigger step up. He has the talent, but needs time, and better support to ensure he makes that step.

Not necessarily blaming him capt! Just like you say he was almost completely uninvolved, I'd be surprised if he had more than 5 touches.

Now, I’m going to preface this by saying I know the square root of sod all about where or how MGW plays but, is it possible he is the kind of player that will play in the nominal no. 10 role where Lingard played against Newcastle but is able to drop and provide more support defensively when we’re out of position? Something Lingard lacked leaving our cm 2 somewhat exposed.

Lingard can be shunted anywhere on the front line but I think we missed the Zinckernagel pestering press at the weekend.

Think that's what you get from MGW. He had pretty much identical numbers to Zink from a defensive point of view last season (pressing, winning the ball high up the pitch etc.). I think Lingard will provide more of that once he's fitter but I'd say MGW is more comfortable deeper than Jesse is, could see him slotting into a 3-5-2 if we went that way.

It was noticeable that Lingard struggled to sit on their playmaker.

Until we start to get a foothold in midfield I think having a fluid 2 of Lingard and Johnson up front with 2 midfielders makes sense.

Especially as they both drift wide naturally and MGW has a tendency to make central runs and has played as a CF/False 9 in possession. Then Awoniyi and Surridge offer bench options

Captn-but it isn’t quite so simple. Marinakis isn’t just writing a cheque from his personal account-it’s not a gift. Whilst we’ve all got used to more and more complex financial origami the money will be on the club ledger in one way or another. Clearly we have considerable slack this year related to hitting the sunny uplands of the prem but let’s face it football is littered with clubs that have overstretched themselves and ultimate pay the price particularly if they don’t back up their risk with progressive success on the pitch. That’s all-I just hope we have shit hot accountants making sure we cover all the scenarios and aren’t left in a year or two selling the family silver again.

Listening to the Garibaldi podcast. Darren Fletcher (not sure what people's views on him are) is fairly adamant that the deal will happen as 1) he's been the #1 target all summer so it's an important the club show their intent 2) player (supposedly) wants to come and play under Steve Cooper. 3) would fit a front three with Lingard and Brennan...

We'll see. I think £30m and £10m in add ons isn't such a bad deal..

I agree totally with you on the problems that unwise spending can bring, as evidenced by my concerns that despite parachute payments we could find ourselves in FFP Queer Street in a couple of years time. Our immediate and most pressing problem is to complete the assembling of a squad with the quality and "togetherness" to compete at this level - something not yet in evidence on saturday's showing.

If it works for us on the pitch and in the results, then £40m would be a bargain as it may well give us a 2nd season in the Prem, with fresh opportunity to build on the squad we assemble this season. My concern (and this is the last time I will type this - promise!!) is that at 22 years old, with little by way of Premiership track record, and only 1 season in the championship, MGW may not have the ability to make that difference on the pitch just yet. I think he has the potential, but realising that potential when opposition teams already are stuffed with experienced, high quality, proven players may take more time than we have. Time will tell.

I think we are probably agreeing Captn!. The main issue for me is that we have no idea how he will react and perform this season and if we are honest not much in the way of pointers given the pace, strength and power of premier teams to which hes had very little exposure. If we were paying 40M for an experienced performer (say for example a Kalvin Phillips to stiffen up our midfield) then fair enough but this lad is a gamble, a calculated one for sure, but a gamble none the less...

Don't see a front 3 with Brennan and JL. Theres no number 9 in that 3 and whilst we might like the fantasy we can play with "3 false nines" a la city, facts are we need a big strong bastard who knows how to lead a line just to get us up the pitch at this level i.e. we need to walk before we run.
I could see Brennan right, MGW left and Taiwo in the middle, Lingard then has to occupy a midfield role....

Do we? How many sides play with a big strong bastard to lead the line?

We need players who can find space, keep the ball and either run with it or move it onto a teammate quickly.

Uneducated non itk guesses:

- Wolves have conceded the player is ours, and have said we can have in once they bring in replacements/targets.

- their manager isn't enamored, hence the 50m comments.

- the previous offer wasn't far away and has been restructured.

- the 40m is bollocks to appease their fan base.

The one thing I do know is Marinakis has repeatedly said we won't be violating ffp regs, so he is protecting his investment in the best way possible, by investing to keep us up, in line with our Manager's wishes. Our manager who is another asset.

I'm happy.

He was great on the whole podcast, well worth a listen. Putting a few right that are doom and gloom including the host.
