Thread: The semi-pro, Sunday league and 5-a-side thread

Default The semi-pro, Sunday league and 5-a-side thread

A thread for everyone who had trials at 15 and is still "turning out" on a Saturday, Sunday, or Thursday night after work. Let us know how you're getting on, whether you're banging them in or blowing out of your arse.

As a starter, here's a brilliant Twitter thread about that class of absolute fraggle who takes it all too seriously:

Does your 5-a-side team have a DoF?

To be fair, they clearly know more about running a football club than Fawaz.

I read that thread yesterday and imagined Rich and Oscar trying to implement those rules on our LTLF Powerleague squad.

I thought I’d wandered into the future Notts County thread when I saw the title.

I've just got a pair of these.

A lot of people I play with/against wear blades and studs on hard astroturf, which I don't get. I made the mistake of wearing studs on a hard pitch 10 years ago, instead of going and getting my astroturfs out the boot, which I think contributed to me killing my knee.

I'm only playing for fun with a bunch of people who a work mate knows through his brother in law. It's not too bad a level and no proper tackling so it's quite chilled and fun. Tried to get a work team going last year and we were so unfit, we were proper blowing after 2 minutes and kids were running rings around a load of 30-somethings, a few of the lads were the types you know don't really play football as well

Fucked my knee up wearing blades on 3G pitches during training for years.

Think they got stuck in the turf as I was running for a ball (not even full pelt) and twang! Never been the same since.

Or maybe I’m just getting old.

I play every friday with some mates, sometimes play with a group from work if they can muster the numbers. Still love it but I'm just not fit enough to play 11 a side.

Anyway, before Christmas we were playing and as I landed on my left foot, it completely rolled underneath me. It was one of those where straight away I thought I had done something serious. After giving it a minute or two, I walked it off, it was still really sore and I couldn't turn on it but played on. Anyway, over Christmas it has still been painful, especially first thing in a morning after waking up.

Anyway I played again yesterday, first pass I did with my left foot it made me wince, still can't change direction on it and it has swollen up again. So the question is, does anyone think it is worth going down to the doctors about?

    Mate.

You need to see a physio at the very least. It shouldn’t be so swollen still.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

„Don't forget you're alive. 'Cause sometimes when you walk around the city and you're in a bad mood, you can think, hey, wait a minute, we're alive! We don't know what the next second will bring and what a fantastic thing this is. This can get easily forgotten in the routine of life, and that's something I'm trying to bring to my attention at all times. Don't forget you're alive. We're not dead, you know. This is the greatest thing.”

I had similar and it wasn’t until I had a couple of months off that it cleared up. The best thing is to go to the Drs and they may refer you to the hospital for a scan (which is what happened with my knee, after I had gone to a physio after being misdiagnosed as “bruised ligaments” the first time).

Cheers for the advice lads. It's weird because putting my weight down straight on it and it fine, but anything at an angle or sharp turns and it feels like it is going to go again. I thought a few weeks off over Christmas would have done the trick but clearly not.

I’ve ask Mrs Beardo (A Dr) and she has said go to your GP’s as it sounds like it’s ligament damage. It won’t hurt when standing on it straight as those ligaments won’t be used. But twisting will use them. You may need an MRI. Playing on will only make it worse and will increase recovery time and may require surgery it it snaps!

Cheers mate I really appreciate it.

I thought as much, and I know it sounds stupid, but I love playing on a Friday with the lads so that is the reason why I have put it off so much.

I still play quite regular down the forest playing fields astro turf. I've gone from a left wing position as a youngster to the fat ronaldo goal hanging role now though

So you’ve gone from the left wing into the centre?

Any chance you could offer the same advice to the Labour Party?

I rolled my ankle a couple of times and it's bastard painful so I got myself a couple of these things, and can't recommend them enough. They've saved my beleagured joints on more then one occasion since.

My Sunday side are struggling this weekend

My desperation has led me to here. If anyone fancies running about attempting to play football this Sunday let me know!

I forgot the rush you get from coming on as a sub and telling the ref the name of the player you are supposed to be.... at uni i played as a ringer and my name was Mohammed akbar or summat like that.

    Ref believed it, the fool
