Default Top 5 Worst Forest Moments

With the forum full of doom and gloom and memories of previous disastrous failures it had to be done.

No rules other than it has to be a genuine low point for you.

    1) Yeovil. Yes that one. - the club remains stuck in it’s lowest ever league position after a truly comedic play off semi final. Derby go 2 leagues above us shortly after.

    2) Wolves League Cup final 1980. My first trip to Wembley literally ends in tears after Shilton and Needham reenact a scene from Laurel and Hardy. Devastated.

    3) The FA Cup final. Milford-Gazza-Des-Cloughie. A very bad day. Devastated. Note to self: Never go to Wembley again - luckily I support Forest so this has been surprisingly easy.

    4) 5-0 at Derby. I still have flashbacks of the simple way our team was destroyed that day. A proper white flag surrender. Followed by many months of hilarious banter from my Sheep supporting family.

    5) The last days of Fawaz. We had become one of those tragi-comedy clubs who lurched from one calamity to another on and off the field. I despised the club at that point.

Forest has left me with Schadenfreude through these moments I relish in other big clubs now suffering its like Karma for me now

    1) Yeovil and that will always be the worse. Little old Yeovil against the big bad Forest everyone wanted Yeovil to do it and no one gave them a cat in hells chance after losing 2 nil.
    2) Stoke game how can it not be when the whole footballing community call you chokers
    3) Losing out in the playoffs the first season Davies was back again after being in a commanding position
    4) Little old Blackpool beating us after we played so well all season
    5) Swansea scoring from the halfway line to seal the playoffs

There are so many though, for me signing Paul Evans and Gareth Taylor was a particular low moment and we thoroughly deserved relegation for selling all our best youngsters to be replaced with utter dross.

Losing 4-0 to scunthorpe on tele I watched it with my mate.

Losing to Chester in the FA Cup, obviously living in Wrexham at the time got stick.

Losing to Oldham 5-0, I was there that fateful day

    Fawaz years in general.

I need to post that sogn from the disney Robin Hood cartoon film again, ill quote it "Can there be some happiness for me....... Not in Nottingham"......

    1) Relegation to League One; it doesn't get much worse than that.
    2) Yeovil play-off semi final, 2nd leg at home. No explanation required.
    3) That Yeovil game in League One where we lost 3-0 and Gary Megson invited some fans into the dressing room to have a go at the players.
    4) Losing 4-0 at home to Scunthorpe on TV.
    5) Losing 5-0 away at Oldham.

As disappointing as the Stoke collapse was, it isn't even on my radar when it comes to worst Forest moments, I could come up with plenty worse.

    1. Chester away in the League Cup. I was at work with the radio on. Realised after a while that I was doing no work and just crying at the state of it.

    2. Nigel Doughty dying when he did. It left the club in real danger of ceasing to exist, needing a generous owner willing to take on a basket case of a club. You know how that story played out. That was a dark, dark time for NFFC.

    3. Yeovil. To be so close to Wembley with a good team, and to have it taken away so quickly....

    4. Sheffield United playoff 2nd leg. Similar to the above but with longer lasting, slower burning hurt.

    5. 1991 Cup Final. Twat Gascoigne and twat Milford. If ever there was a "sliding doors" moment for this club, that was it.

By "relegation battle", do you mean 7th, 12th or 14th?

    1. Relegation to League 1 with a particular highlight being the 3-0 capitulation at home to Plymouth in a 6-pointer, of which I couldn't be bothered to stay to the end and was in the Fellows Morton & Clayton before the final whistle.
    2. Yeovil playoffs with the added bonus of being on a stag day in Derby the following day. Took me until about 4.00 to build up the courage to go.
    3. Losing to Carlisle a few weeks before the end of the 2008 season, it felt like automatic promotion chances were over and we were crap at playoffs, so another season in the 3rd division beckoned.
    4. Relegation in Clough's last season, it was the first time I'd experienced us be rubbish, plus the decline of Clough was obvious and heartbreaking.
    5. The embarrassment of Pierre van Hooijdonk going on strike along with selling Cooper and Campbell after promotion, leading to the realisation that the club owners obviously did not have the best interests of the club at heart.

I'd not considered the SheffU/Clough last game thing. Yes it was heartbreaking but I still feel it tempered with the celebration of the era of Mr Clough. Plus, the relegation had been coming for a while and I guess I was mentally prepared for it even though we could possibly have escaped on the last day with a win.

Yeovil, Derby, Oldham..........individual games suck at the time, but much like the other night I'm over them quickly. What sticks are the bigger decisions from up on high, which essentially made those games happen in the first place.

    So with that in mind.....

    1) The day they sacked Hart.

I mean, really? This bloke had worked utter miracles after Platt decimated us, not only taking us to the playoffs, but being the man who reared half the squad which we did that with.

Huckerby available for thepance? Blake availble for threpance the year before? Nah, let's make Hart pay for Platt's sins, and follow procedure because we'd sooner be conditioned drones incapable of employing independent thought and feel safe, rather than recognise what's happening in front of our very faces.

    2) The day they sacked Billy Davies MK1.

After enduring years of shitness, and FINALLY clawing our way out of L1, we'd suddenly gone from potentially sinking back into that mire, to being on the cusp of the Prem again. It really felt as if we'd turned a major corner, and all the club had to do for once was buy a good left back, and spend modestly in a few other areas.

Surely after all those years Marthur had learned? Surely after seeing the likes of Hart cop the blame for "failure" he'd woken up to the fact that to get promoted you need better players?

No. Principles, snobbishness, and a bizarre desire to teach people lessons ruled over the greater good of the club. Nose duly severed, face duly spited. Years of hurt awaited.

    3) The day they sacked SOD.

Similar to Hart, he wasn't the greatest manager, but created a great situation. The team-manager dynamic, esp with Reid & Geddy in there at their pomp, was an odd but brilliant balance.

Fazza however pulling SOD's sacking out the blue after a 4-2 win for Mcleish, I mean, it's probably the single most stupid act I think any owner has ever made.

    4) The day they sacked Billy Davies MK2.

Always cops the blame for "behind scenes shenanigans", but the simple fact is that it wasn't his fault he & his contacts had to do the owner's job for him, and we'd got another mediocre squad punching above it's weight and on course for the playoffs.

Fazza could have signed Austin & Leadbitter as we sat comfortably 5th, instead Rafik & Abdoun came into the frame. Poor Jan recruitment & injuries let us down, and all that was left is a lesson for us not to repeat yet again this year.

Folk will site all the backroom stuff, but the correct course of action was to bare with it, give the playoffs a shot, then act. Not act and leave Brazil in charge for several months & not at least give the playoffs a go.

    5) Employing Platt

McClaren, Megson, so many we could throw in there, but in a key season where it was vital we bounced straight back, we entrusted that task to a frankly think as fuck fish-face, who couldn't go half a sentence without dropping an "erm..." in there whilst his brain caught up.

Worst of all though he'd had about 6 weeks of managerial experience. I mean, how naive can you be? I'll never forget I was eating my Cheeseburger outside the Jug & Glass when I heard they'd appointed him, and inside my gut said "here comes years of hurt" It wasn't just the cheeseburger talking.

The reason I haven't included the sacking of Pearce? Because, even though it stung more than all of them, it was the catalyst behind Fazza finally fucking off.

Failure? I can accept that if we at least have had a go. But the above embodied handicapping ourselves before we'd at least even had a shot.

Nothing has ever hurt like Bramall Lane.

Yeovil was so tragic it was almost comical.

Getting relegated was on the cards for a long time.

By Stoke, it had become predictable, like a tired sitcom that has gone on too long. You’ve written this episode in previous seasons - MK away, Chester in the cup, Scunthorpe, Oldham, Woking......

Nothing has ever hurt like Bramall Lane.

    1. Bramall Lane. There is a mandatory forum-ban for anyone who posts that photograph

    2. Megson. Just. No.

    3. The tragic passing of Nigel Doughty. A genuinely decent man who loved his club.

    4. Yeovil.

    5. The 1991 FA Cup Final.

    1) Relegation at QPR down to League One - featuring Darryl Powell being sent off after 30mins and an own goal from the very average John Curtis. Took a load of non-Forest mates, they have pitied my chose of club ever since

    2) Woking away in the LDV Vans - The mate I went with became an Arsenal fan the next day. To compound matters I left my phone on the train back to London.

    3) Getting humbled by Bayern Munich in the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup, the day I realised we weren't ever going to be the club I thought we were.

    4) Every moment of the Megson era. that was dog shite football, start to finish

    5) Last week.

Honourable mention for the 1-8 v Man U. Left after the 5th and watched the last 3 go in whilst having a pint in the Supporters, eyes full of tears.

And to think we equalised through Tank.

    Horrible afternoon.

    1 The sad end to the Clough era;
    2 The awful injury to Joe Baker in the F.A.Cup 6th Round versus Everton;
    3 Nottingham forest 1 Manchester United 8... scarred me for life that one did;
4 Being trapped in the bus station in Leicester in the bad old days, being pelted with broken paving slabs and bottles...
5 Ian Storey-Moore being sold to Manchester United... I was young,he was my hero, I cried when I read the headline in the Nottingham Evening Post.

Losing the FA cup final to spurs was the catalyst for it all really, everything that came after that was because of that.

See, stuff like that I hate, but I can accept. We gave it a go, the ref dicked us, we lost. Shit happens.

But the decisions which we ourselves make which handicap us? Those sting the most.

Selling Capmbell is another. Totally unnecessary, totally self harming, yet we chose to do it. Crackers.

It's the oppositions job to beat us, and the refs often favour the opposition. But it's in Forest's nature to defeat itself. Which is crazy.

Don’t get the people saying Yeovil. A club at its lowest ebb doing stuff clubs at their lowest ebb do. It was more comical than anything. It cost us one year more in league one, woop de do.

Sheffield United in the playoffs however, has arguably changed our destiny for decades. We had a great team and great manager that season, feel good factor was the best I’ve ever seen it at Forest. Where would we be now with the prem millions had we finished the job?

That’s deserving of a worst moment for me.

The poor results like last week are often easier to take than the poor decision making which makes you think 'this is my club and I don't trust the people who run/own it'.
Saying all that, it's just as well that most other clubs are run by clowns or we'd be non-league by now.

    1. Yeovil
    2. Blackpool
    3. Relegation to League One
    4. Stoke (last week)
    5. Nottingham Forest F.C. 1–8 Manchester United F.C.

Special bad moments, but not truely embaressing to:

    Sheffield United
Losing to Bayern Munich 2-1 and 1-5 in the UEFA cup
    Selling Collymore
All of the first season in League One
    Relegation 98/99

"Worst" is an interesting choice of word to use for me as there's been disappointment, anger, resentment, worry at different points.

    1) Yeovil - Disappointment, anger, worry all rolled up into one, came off the back of a mediocre season the season prior and at the time felt like a moment which would cement us as a League One club for a long, long time.

    2) Doughty giving up on us - Not his death, as sad as that was, but a lifelong Forest fan hounded out by the fans who decided he was the devil and Billy was our saviour, despite Doughty bankrolling the club through very tough financial times. Felt like the club had lost its soul at that point and I resented most of you for a long time after.

    3) Sheff Utd away - Gutting for our young lads who had a great season and deserved more.

    4) Losing 4-0/5-0 to a bunch of dross League One clubs - Wasn't too fussed about the relegation as long had made peace it was coming, but apathy for the club reached peak in the League One days where we laid down for anyone who wanted it. Oldham was probably the worst of the bunch. Chester, Woking and whoever it was from the 8th tier or whatever when we drew 0-0 at home in the first round of the FA Cup. Some part timers from the south coast I think.

    5) Sacking O'Driscoll - Lost hope with the club (again). We'd apparently been 'saved' by a benevolent rich man from abroad who started well by hiring what I thought was both the best appointment for the short term and the long term. Sacking him after a win would have been forgivable if we were in 22nd place but the kneejerk of it made me feel like we'd be in for a decade long roller coaster ride of moronic decisions, financial mismanagement and probable relegation. Got 2/3 right, and was close to the 3rd, just glad the tenure didn't last the full decade.

To be honest I don't think Swansea, Blackpool or Stoke come anywhere close to the above. Blackpool/Stoke was disappointing but we'd seen it before with Yeovil. Swansea were the better team over two legs and deserved to go through, and we'd been pretty average all season anyway only sneaking into sixth place near end of season. I got over the Stoke result within 48 hours.

    1. Yeovil 07. Perhaps never to be beaten. Anyone else go on a night out after the game? Thousands of very sad and angry Forest fans decending on the city centre. One of my mates got glassed and I ended up spending the night in Rileys. Never forget the state of the city centre at about 7 am. It looked like a scene from the Omega Man. I think this will forever be number one in my eyes.

    2. Sheffield United 03.

    3. Blackpool 10.

    4. 2020 collapse.

    5. Swansea 11

I've managed to blank out relegation to league one and most of the embarrassment we had to endure.
