Which is all great in theory, but there's every chance history repeats itself and we see a promising team broken up with the best talent leaving the club. Watson, Sow, Grabban etc will all be another year closer to retirement, and you're then putting a lot of faith in our scatter gun approach to recruitment to find key replacements and somebody able to get 20+ a season.

There are absolutely no guarantees we'd be able to build on what we've achieved season, so we need to do everything that we possibly can to capitalise on where we are now, while we could very much be at the crest of the wave.

How many times do some people need to be told how the accounts reflect transfer fees?
    Acquisitions:
The total transfer fee including agents commission is written off in equal installments over the contract term.
If a player is sold or his career is ended before the end of the contract then any balance of the purchase cost is written off at the point.
    Disposals:
The sales proceeds less any balance remaining from the original purchase cost are taken as a profit or a loss in the year they occur.
    If we take 2 examples:
1 Joao Carvalho: acquisition cost £13m; contract 5-years duration.
Annual charge against profit and loss account : £13m divided by 5 years = £2.6m
If he is sold this summer (after 2 years of his contract have elapsed and we get (say) £10m for him then the "profit2 on sale would be: £10m less £7.8m (the remaining 3 years of the original contract).
Alternatively, if we sold Matty Cash for say £15 million, that would all go to profit and loss account as he is a product of our Academy and his acquisition cost was £nil.
It isn't that difficult to understand.
So,before anyone posts about what we can or can't afford to pay for a player, bear in mind that the total cost isn't written off in one year (unless it is a 1-year contract!).
