Don’t know about her pimp but her best customer was a polish plasterer from Sutton.

Freddie's does sound like a record shop I'd go to. Not sure about Samuel's but I'm sure you could knock something up rather cool

You've got to have a certain type of record store out of Nottingham I think, Langley Mill and Ridgeway (also not there anymore) had a vibe about them that I wouldn't want to own.

Vinyl Lounge in Mansfield seems to do okay, but that's in a town centre.

I think it'd be called 54s actually. I have a thing for the number 54.

No idea why, I just think it's cool.

He obtained a lot of imported soul stuff from America long before many of them became part of the Northern Soul scene.

I actually went on to work for him for a couple of months in the summer of 1975, when I helped out his distribution manager and head buyer, John Bratton, who I'd got to know well through him being a fellow Forest fan. One of his employees had to take time off to recover from illness, and so I agreed to take time away from my job in the construction trade to cover for the bloke.

Selby had a wholesale and mail-order centre located in the former Canal Street School building (later to become Sherrif's Lodge before eventually being demolished) which mainly supplied his Selectadisc outlets and other shops. The job was to take a truck that had been converted into a mobile record shop and set-up in various markets around the East Midlands, mainly in Mansfield, Loughborough and Melton Mowbray. It ended up being much harder work than I anticipated, but on the other hand quite rewarding for someone like myself with a strong interest in music.

I would just love it if... folk supported their LOCAL football team instead of Liverpool FC, Chelsea FC, etc etc.

Sadly it won't happen, the best you are going to get is where they support a Plastic Club AND follow their local lower division side. Young kids always want to associate themselves with big trendy things and the media publicity machine is geared to punting the Plastics.

I remember being a Forest fan between 1971-75 and it wasn't fun even back then.

    .
My Dad started taking me to the City Ground regular back in 1969. I agree the 1971-75 years weren't the best, especially relegation to Division Two.

Even during those bad years it was still very special. Peter Cormack was my first Forest Hero.

But for me it was about being part of the Forest football culture back then and going with my dad.

I supported Forest because my dad took me to the City Ground regular. Bought me a scarf and a few badges. That was enough to get me hooked on NFFC, win, lose or draw.

I think the point I'm trying to make is, perhaps (if affordable) parents could take their kids to local football matches and enjoy quality time together before they turn into plastic Scousers etc.

Oh and take their mobile phones off them for 90 mins.

If I could just ring up one company without having to press option 1,2 or 3 and then have to listen to some poxy music for 20 minutes.

    Good old British customer service.

You can mock German bureaucracy (and I do, frequently) but I do like that I can walk into a real physical office of virtually any government department and speak to a real person (badly, in my case).

Also, a couple of weeks back I had a non-urgent tax query so I used the online website of the Finanzamt to send them a question via a secure web form.

Not ten minutes later, they phoned me on my mobile. A real tax inspector. I was pleasantly surprised, but this is considered quite normal here.

Of course, this is supported by higher taxation, but it is a clear benefit because you’re not wasting half your day having to listen to some insipid music whilst on hold and being told how important your call is.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

No, just a thought that your love of 54 might come from reading 45's on shop windows from the inside.

The French 'fonctionnaires' have a bad reputation, yet we have never encountered a problem, they are always friendly and helpful, mainly I suspect because we are polite to them, which I don't think the French are.

I have been dealing with HMRC recently over my pension, where you do spend ages on the phone waiting, but to be fair their problems have been caused by the ridiculously complex changes to UK pension law that Cameron brought it.

I can only imagine how much worse it's going to become back here then Chris given the seemingly unstoppable direction of travel towards lower taxes, less regulation and even less public spending.

    Less public spending?
Blowjob and his Minions are going to break the bank on a feasibility study about whether it is doable to build a brunnel (bridge and tunnel) from Scotland to Ireland.
And before you think "a feasibility study won't cost much" remember he spent £55m on a feasibility study for a simple bridge across the Thames.
That was £55 m without a sod being turned.
So how much for a feasibility study on the Brunnel?
Public money will be spent aplenty: most of it will go straight into the pockets of Blowjobs cronies (allegedly).
