Built a cracking side in those seasons in the premiership in the late nineties, full of flair and "characters".RIP.

    Six promotions as a manager.

Clough spoke highly of him. Sold him Trevor Francis

Remember one quote of Smith's when asked what he was going to do next after a defeat. Went along the lines of 'I'm going to go home and watch a video of Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest'

I thought he'd managed loads of different clubs, he managed 8 league clubs, 1 of those being in 2 different spells, and 1 non-league club, in nearly 40 years of management.

As a comparison Garry Monk has managed 5 clubs in nearly 6 years as a manager.

33 years as a manager across those 8 eight clubs.

Back in a time when people were given time to create something, instead of being turfed out after fewer than 12 months for not making a rag-tag team of mercenaries perform to the best of their abilities.

It might be rose tinted glasses, but football is utterly shite these days.

A lesser-known fact about Jim was that he was the first British manager recorded as having played a 352 formation.

It was apparently his funeral today. Someone in twitter asked Alan Nixon for a tribute / anecdote. He wrote ‘ Funny guy. Twinkle in his eye. Also smart man‘. Should have got old al in to write the obituary

I know it was the funeral and you say nice things as a matter of course, but not often in football you hear comments from all sides praising the guy, with not a harsh word. Genuine affection.
