Default Matchday 15: Luton Town Fan Comments

1986 is one of my earliest memories of a Luton game. 4-2 to us, watched from Oak Rd to left behind the goal. My dad bought me a scarf. Seemed like there was a goal being scored every 5 minutes. Oak Rd seemed very lively. The good old days.

Losing 2-1 to Forest in 1984/1985 was my second ever game. I think they scored after 2 minutes. Might have been Steve Hodge.

That was similar time to the four one win v liverpool. Put 8 past the 2 best footballing sides in the land at the time in the space of a few weeks. Liverpool had never lost in a game in which Rush had scored, so when they got a pen at 3 or 4 nil down, he stepped aside to let Molby take it.

One of my first games too. Brilliant. I remember how fast franz Carr was!

Didn't see anything wrong with that what so ever.

    Fuming, we should be ahead.

    1-0 down.

    Our defence is pathetic.

    Same every game.

The goal was a blatant a mixture of error between Bree and Bradley. Both went for the ball, both missed it allowing Grabban to run through and slot past Shea.

Itís been ALL us. Losing Izzy is a massive blow. Hope itís not serious.

Can not believe how shite that goal was to concede. Unbelievable. Iím livid. Apart from that weíve played really well and to throw it away like that, and lose our best player all in the space of two minutes is gutting.

If ALL us means passing side to side across the back, then yes, were comfortably winning. But games are about goals and threat. Of which so far, we've had very little.

Looking at it again (and the camera angle isnít great) but I think Potts was offside as it was played by half a body and then when he heads it and the camera is clear he is in an onside position. Very close though and gutting.

    2-0. Shambolic.

Not much else you can say about that. Apart from our defense looks absolutely ponderous.

All about end product. That half was a perfect example. Forest look a million times more dangerous. We just look pretty in possession.

Ponderous at the back. Ponderous in possession. Way too many touches. Side to side. Our possession stats are great I'm sure. But Forest look ten times more dangerous.

Unlucky with the disallowed goal. Couldn't see anything wrong with it.

    2-1.

    With two goals disallowed.

BBC stats reckon we had 70% possession today but you wouldn't say that we dominated or put Forest under much pressure.

It was an even game that they edged by, unfortunately it has to be said, making less mistakes and with a bit of luck.

I wouldn't say that they dominated or put us under much pressure.

Wasn't even. They looked stronger than us all over the pitch.

    You think they dominated us?

At least 4, plus disallowed goals. I can't remember our keeper having to make any?

    I can think of two...

Despite the limitations of Forest's forwards, Town's defence never looked particularly secure.

It was tough to watch. Forest played two banks of 4 in a very unambitious mind set and waited for us to make a mistake which ultimately we have been doing most weeks.

We were really unlucky with those disallowed goals.

Tbf Forest had a shout for a couple of handball penalties (definitely seen them given) so be careful about remembering all the bad luck and forgetting all the good luck.

I would laugh my head off if we'd been given them.

One was offside, the other clearly on.

    Jones on the defeat:

"I could hide behind 70 per cent possession, two offside goals. I am not going to, I was disappointed with the performance for the first time, really, really disappointed. The performance wasnít good enough, a totally different challenge to the one we have had here previously in the Championship.

We had Nottingham Forest and we need to mark how far we have come sometimes, former two-time European Cup winners, sitting in and playing on the counter-attack at Luton and I think we struggled for craft and creativity. To break them down and thatís the true assessment of today. Losing Izzy Brown so early doesnít help, we tried everything and it wasnít enough."

If Graeme Jones really believes that our 'little' club's Championship survival depends on the contribution of one on-loan Premiership player, it doesn't say much for his opinion of the rest of the squad - including, presumably, those he brought in. As for yesterday, we could hardly be expected to beat Nottingham Forest - having lost to them in the 1959 Cup Final.

With all his references to Forest being two times European Cup Winners you could forgiven for thinking Jones had put a side out to beat Shilton, McGovern, Francis, Woodcock...

The 2 time European champions v plucky Luton thing is bollocks, almost like we didn't play them in a final 30 years ago. Largely he's honest, and talks sense, let's stick with him.

Excuse after excuse after excuse. He talks like he is surprised, Forset play the counter attack. That is the way they play every game. He knows that, or he should.

    Thanks Calvin.

I thought they were going to ignore the penalty shouts. Could have had us a third goal after Grabban had missed the first one.

I didn't really get a good look at the first offside 'goal', but the second was well off. We were better in all areas.

    Sensible comments overall.
As to the 2 disallowed goals:
I have looked at the 1st several times on the highlights and in all honesty I am not sure one way or the other.
The lino was right up with play and flagged - so I'll trust his judgement.
The second was clearly offside - Collins did run back onside, but from a clear offside position.
    As for the penalties:
the 1st probably would have been given as many times as not, but I think the ref believed that the defender was chasing with his back to the ball and his eyes on Grabban.
Undoubtedly, if the ball doesn't strike the arm it would have gone through to Grabban, who was onside and goal side of his man - a clear scoring opportunity.
Is the defender's arm in an unnatural position?
I can't be sure, but I think the ref probably erred on the defenders part and actually should have given the penalty.
The Luton shout near the end was absolutely not a penalty.

I know I'm biased but both of their "goals" were off for me. First one was close but if that went to VAR he was slightly off.

Our penalty shout was stonewall though genuinely shocking.

I haven’t seen Luton’s disallowed goals but for me they were definitely offside & we should’ve had a penalty

One thing seems to be clear, we are definitely not getting the rub of the green with penalties, thatís four games now where bolt on pens have not been given, you might think thereís some sort of conspiracy going on if it wasnít so annoying.

I do like how we're branded an "unambitious team", yet we've won 4 of our 8 away games, with no-one in the league winning more than that.

I don't know how you can be unambitious going away from home and coming back with that. You're being ambitious, you're just aware that going gung-ho isn't the way to be ambitious in this league.

Reasonable comments again, most have been this season, surely we will come across a deluded lot at some point?

The reference to Franz Carr made me smile.

    Thanks for posting Calvin.

ĄI believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialismď

Just re-connected to the internet and this is one of the first threads I look for, thanks again Calvin.

I like the guy who says remember the good referee calls as well as the bad ones. May not even out, but they go both ways.
