Default Matchday 12: Wigan Athletic Fan Comments

This was going to be a tough one as we played 2nd in the table, but suddenly in the last 40 minutes Nottingham Forest have become 3rd, and made it all a bit easier for us.

It is traditionally the type of game we turn up for and we generally have a really good performance once every 7 games or so and we are way overdue now so hopefully Sunday will be one of those games that we leave the ground saying 'that's more like it'.

On paper should be hard one and likely loss but we have seen enough to know we normally do everything back to front and pull out good results when we shouldn't and stinkers when we should. We are so used to the pattern we are now expecting us to pick up results against these type of teams which must look odd from the outside considering our form has been a bit lacklustre overall.

I'd be happy with a point.

Just hope we don't embarrass ourselves in front of the Sky cameras.

It appears from all the bumming sky have been giving Forest today it's a matter of how many we let in.

    Cook already bumming them up.

They've won the European cup and Cloughie was their manager you know - massive club etc etc - it's pathetically getting the excuses in before the game - again.

Get this clown out of your club.

All the Sunday papers previews talk about Forest, not one sentence about Wigan.

Forest are going for promotion, we are an irrelevant club doing nothing in the league, of course Forest get the headlines, I’d write the same if I was a journo.

Thought we looked much better today. 3 points vs a good team. Much needed boost of optimism for us.

    Cook in.

One very good game today, I'll give him that, but it'll take more than one game to erase the year and a half of absolute shit he's delivered so far. But no complaints today. Played well against quality opposition.

Another toothless attacking display (although Moore’s work rate was outstanding) but defence and Forest’s wastefulness made up for it. Those points will make up for the zero points we’ll get in the next two.

Ref was a homer for both sides.

Alhough they didn't play well today Forest have some good players that needed to be contained.

2-0 would have been a fair reflection.

Good result against a form team and lots of positives.

Not seen us so up for a match in a while, chased everything down. Enjoyed the match. Had a couple of friends in the Forrest end moaning about them making 5 changes.

The ballboys were mom for me, they knew how to slow the game down and take the sting out of the Forest attacks. I reckon they could shoot better than Forest too! When one was bouncing the ball to himself before returning it, that was just an audacious show of confidence beyond his years.

Was the ref sponsoring the match ball? He certainly liked hold onto it and carry it around.

It's so feckin infuriating how we can win so many points at home and get nowt away.

Exacfekintly!! On wednesday we're playing a team of drink drivers (I know, that's not true, it's harsh and a gross untrue generalisation) and guess what'll happen. It's going to be so frustrating after today, possibly the best game we've played at the DW since we beat ManCity! Bloody great game, good football, stunning team work and 11 MoMs.

Don't get to giddy forest where poorer than thay have been for a long time.

Maybe it’s our noisy home support that lifts them to greater heights as every player today was trying to get a foot in and battled. Derby must be there for the taking on Wednesday night but the reality will
    Be depressingly familiar no doubt.

Ben Watson looks like he has lost what pace he may have had. Some nice passes at times to the wings, but thankfully missed an easy chance on goal. Thought his limp attempt at a tackle allowed Lowe to score too.

Sammy Ameobi ... hahaahahahahaha bloody awful and should still be playing for Bolton.

Enjoyed the game today. Both teams created chances but I thought we looked more likely to score again.

Ameobi was an absolute joke. Dove twice and stayed down pretended to be injured, Bolton reject.

Must say the crowd playd thar part today both sets of supporters.

Got to give their keeper some credit for keeping the score down.

I was shocked when I read the Forest team sheet as soon as I saw it I knew our chances of winning increased significantly. If you'd have asked me to name the possible strongest Forest 11 I think up to 8 of them were missing from the starting line up today. Some of them were injuries like Semedo, Darikwa, Dawson, Sow but Grabban, Carvalho, Adamoah and Silva all on the bench as well - I can only assume they were so over confident that they felt they they could save some of the big guns for their mid week game. In the past we've been guilty of taking opposition lightly and results for granted and we were the beneficiaries this time.

Saying all that you can only play what's put in front of you and it's not like Forest didn't have a decent team on the pitch.

Forest seemed to have one of those days where every shot or final ball was off but you'll happily take that.

Can we just point out that Forest brought on a sub who they paid 13 million for this is what were up against in this league

Quote from the Sky Sports folk today. Wigan had the second highest net spend in the Championship this summer. If that’s actually true then you can shove this “what we’re up against bollocks” straight up your backside!

Erm maybe your a bit thick and can't understand that 13 million for one player, just let that sink in, one player, is a tad more than what we spent on eight ( players then again you said if it is actually true

We have spent a little on fees for once but our wage bill is tiny in comparison to clubs like Derby. God knows what they will be paying Rooney.

A battling performance. The lads played well deserving the win. Hanging on at the end though.

Good performance against quality opposition, to be fair. We pressed well and didn't let them play their game.

Not to be pedantic but why start a new thread about the Notts Forest game?

Not to be even more pedantic but there's no such team called Notts Forest. It's Nottingham Forest. Notts goes in front of County.

Thought Forest were poor, looked an average mid table side.

Forest did look average, but I've seen them play a few times (highlights) this season, not to mention their league position speaking volumes about their quality.

I think the performances of Williams and Macleod had a lot to do with how average we made them look. Those two in particular were fantastic at pressing and harrying; never gave the Forest players space or time to play their game, and consistently forced mistakes from the Forest players.

I think we made them look average but they're clearly a good team.

Glad to see Forest have gone back to being average again.

They're right mind, our backup players drag us down to being an average, mid-table side.

Two comments that werent far off for me. Particularly the shooting, we haven't looked anything like from 18yds & over this season.

Had a look back. Watson flung a leg out as he was never catching the man. Wouldn't blame him, more Worrall being caught out of position. I would have expected Sow to have just ploughed through the guy in the same position though.

I fail to believe Ben Watson ever had any pace.

Some fair comments again, can’t really disagree with any of it based on the performance.

    Thanks for posting Calvin.

The difference between their home results and their away results is quite amazing.

Probably down to the intimidating atmosphere at their rugby stadium.

Looking on a brighter note we have given them some confidence and their next game is away at Prideless Park...

Yes I think its obvious SL underestimated them. Hopefully he learns from this. I'm sure he will.

Most leagues aren't as tight as the Championship.

It was a catalogue of errors really! Robinson was too far forward, so Worrall had to cover but missed the tackle and floored Robbo, them Watson failed in his tackle.

This is why SL needs to settle on a consistant starting XI, and stick to it as much as possible. In his system the communication between the full backs and wingers is key. So much chopping and changing means no-one is getting used to linking with the same players.

If you remember, the Blackburn goal was caused by a similar defensive error.
