    That was unexpected. Miller-Uibo beaten.

48.14. That is effectively a WR. If you ignore runs by eighties runners from behind the iron curtain...

That is mental, nobody has come close to that time in the effective drug testing era.

Barshim brought the crowd with him.

From my club Daryll Neita. And Steve Backley back in the day. Well represented today.

Best night tonight. Couple of great races. Sounds like a World Champs now. Go on, Barshim.

Blimey. That is probably an unofficial WR too.

    On the red button now...

Eliud Kipchoge's latest attempt at becoming the first person to run the marathon distance under two hours. He's going to do it today. 45 mins in.

I see he did it. Amazing. Most of us couldn't cover that distance at that speed on a bike.

Amazing achievement, but if I was the runner I'd not feel any real sense of satisfaction.
Perfectly flat course; pace-making car with lines on the road.
Other athletes providing a human windbreak.
Yes, it is amazing and hats off to him, but when he does it in a proper race, without all the artificial assistance then it will be it will not be just an amazing feat, but a genuine one.
And I know I'll get slaughtered for voicing this, but my back is strong and my shoulders are broad.
Whip me - I can take it

Does it matter what aids he had?

He ran 26 miles at a pace faster than 13mph.

    It's a massive achievement.

It will inspire the next generation of distance athletes to do this in competition conditions.

I agree totally about the significance of the achievement.
But it matters nought until he does it in a proper race.
    This was not "athletics".
This was a scientific experiment to see if a human being could actually do this.
When it is repeated, even bettered in a full-on race then it will be an athletic achievement.
But, and I repeat myself here, it is an amazing achievement.

So when you ride your bike but it's not in a UCI sanctioned event it's not cycling?

    You've seen me ride then
No, when I ride it isn't cycling - its bike-riding for pleasure..
When a chap sets a new world speed on a bike by being towed by a Porsche or something like that it isn't cycling.
When a whole running "event" has no other runners who are competing to win, it isn't a race, and it really isn't "athletics".
The achievement has been recognised only by the title "World Best", which it absolutely is, and the runner deserves fame and fortune for a fantastic achievement.
It hasn't been recognised as a "World Record" by the World Athletics Governing bodies.
And in my mind it isn't athletics.
I don't want to cause any upset or provoke anyone to anger here... I think this is a milestone in the endurance and capabilities of the human body.
What would have happened if any one of the other runners who provided the support had actually taken on the challenge, gone for the line and "stolen" that World Best title?
