Default Clubs with unique or funny names.

I worked in Asia a lot, so today with some free time decided to lay a few bets on Asian footy, Chose Indonesian League 1

And decided to bet on Semen Padang. Padang in Indonesian means field. Don't ask me what Semen means, but if you mixed English and Bahasa Indonesia up, it would mean Semen Field. Not the kind of ground you'd want to play football eh?

I have 1 Asian friend who's a compulsive gambler, forever loses but never deterred. And he'll stay up the whole night betting. Once I had a peek at his bets and realised he had bet on the following teams:

    1. Deportivo Moron
    2. Cockburn City

which would aptly describe him and his betting style.

Anyway back to unique names. Ours is kinda unique - Nottingham Forest. We're a very eco friendly or a 'go green' club!
Others I can think off hand

    Go Ahead Eagles Deventer
    Rasenballsport Leipzig
    Crystal Palace

    Derby County.

Everyone pisses themselves every time they hear it.

    My two favourites:

    Deportivo Wanka:

    And Wormatia Worms:

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

Heard about the Worms of course, but thought you were joking about the Wankas! Had to google it! Peruvian club eh?

So they might have the chance 1 day to meet Deportivo Moron in the Copa Sudamericana or libertadores.

Imagine the headline: Wankas meet Morons to decide Continent's Champions!

    Panaspropyrgiakos (Greek fourth tier).

I'd love to hear their fans chant the name.

    Ynysygerwn F.C
    (Welsh Football League Div 2)

No, not a 'Benny Hill innuendo' type name I'll grant you. But many a time I've been left starring vainly at those letters on my scrabble rack.

And as with many a Welsh football team name, I'd love to know what chants the crowd (if they get such a thing) manage to come up with.

If I remember correctly, Wormatia Worms was where goalkeeper Rudi Kargus came from. He played for HSV against us in the 80 European Cup Final.

    Some interesting ones:

    Genclerbirligi (Turkey)
    Quick Boys (Netherlands)
    Colo-Colo (Chile)
    Millonarios (Colombia)
    Nueva Chicago (Argentina)
    Racing (Argentina)
    Huracan (Argentina)

The origins of club names is interesting. Racing Club for instance was named after a French auto racing magazine that circulated in Argentina. Huracan was named after the hot air balloon of an early Argentine aviator.

I know in South America there's some teams just named after dates. there's one team called something like Club Atletico 3rd of February.

Also just remembered Botswana Meat Commision FC, but sadly it appears they've rebranded as Gilport Lions.

You remember correctly; Kargus was a youth player originally at Wormatia (he hails from Worms) before he moved to Hamburg.

I've always liked club names born out of their original formation. A few north of the border:

    Inverurie Loco Works
    Forres Mechanics
    Wick Academy
    Civil Service Strollers
    Burntisland Shipyard
