No likes, cuz hardly any fukka likes the hard stone bitter cold truth, and I mean very very few.

We all have to live in the nicey nicey fantasy world to mekkus all feel at ease and be comfortable. Then cry and bleat about it when the dreaded fears come true.

Optimism is shining through my shell like a beautiful summers morning.

Good keeper. Good defence with depth, good midfield with depth. Good striker. And a good coach to get the most out of them. (And a good scout that brought them in, and dare I say good owner?)

We’re a bit short of pace and physicality on the wings and at CF, and back-up for CF. I’m expecting top 6 if injuries don’t intervene. I think they know what we’re missing so I’m hoping for something to arrive in January to give us a boost for the second half of the season.

I put my admittedly annual bet on us for the season last week, though went for winner each way, not just promotion / top 6 this time. And I put a cheeky one on us to beat Swansea too. Not that I’m encouraging it kiddies, just shows I’ve got my hopes up and expectations up!

We're ticking over nicely but really feel we need a backup striker for Grabban. One injury there and can see us getting derailed. Dont think Mir necessarily has enough to substitute for long periods.

How much did we get for Appiah? 8m? Could be a nice investment for that money..

I have mentioned this before. Quite topical when we are facing Swansea at the weekend, a club who are in their second season of PP.
You can add the Canaries and Cardiff to the list as well. But there are clubs without the parachutes who've come close - for example 19th placed Derby County

I think it's more of momentum besides the stronger demoted clubs. Eg Newcastle never looked like in any trouble. Not really because of the payments but the overall squad strength. I was quite surprised that the World Boxing Association didn't get promoted last term. They had a good team and a proven striker in Mr Dive. But to elaborate, it's the team with momentum that usually goes up. Norwich and Villa being my examples. Leeds lost that momentum at the crucial spell last season.

The research is over 11 seasons. PP teams are twice as likely to have “momentum” than non-PP teams. Coincidence?

And “twice as likely” doesn’t mean all PP teams go up, and nor does it mean non-PP teams never go up.

In regards to the original discussion which was contemplating why relegated clubs need parachute payments to manage wages when they should be doing it themselves...

... I would argue that parachute payments despite being sold as that have nothing to do with helping teams manage wages, because the Premier League doesn't care about that.

What they care about is their "product" and the revenue that it makes. The product is billed as the most competitive league in the world, and partly that is the case because at times the weakest club in the Premier League can overturn the big boys, and they can do that because the weakest clubs (aka the newly promoted ones) have probably been in the PL recently, and have maintained a decent squad, so aren't necessarily completely rebuilding like Villa and Sheff Utd have done this summer.

Essentially it creates a pool of 10 clubs or so who over a 3 year period are likely to be going down and then back up again, and those 10 clubs are all going to be better than a club going up to the PL for the first time ever or in a long time.
