Default The Best/Worst Players Forest Never Signed

Another spin on the signings discussions, which players would you have liked to have signed over the years or were glad we avoided?

Nicky Shorey is obviously there from me as a player I'm gutted we didn't sign. Robbie Blake another, 250k as he was pushing us towards the top & Marthur did his typical Marthur fucktardedness.

Thank fuck we avoided Verhoek though, Marthur's incompitance finally benefitting for once.

Who was that lad who was going to sign but then the London riots put him off coming?

    Roberto Baggio.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

Alex Ferguson from Rangers in 1969. He was evidently quite eager to sign, but his wife wasn't keen on moving south at the time and the deal collapsed.

    Martin Keown.

Met with BC. Agreed to sign, but on the way his agent phoned to tell him that Arsenal wanted him. Off he went.

It only takes a second to score a goal.

Gary Mcallister. Would have loved to have seen him play for forest. The story I heard at the time was that he met with Clough who was a bit 'unpredictable', Clough ridiculed him for the cowboy boots he was wearing, so he drove to leeds and signed for them instead.

I remember this one - would have been the Neil Webb replacement. Would probably have been a very good one too, looking at how he did at Leeds (an upgrade even?).

But maybe we'd not have seen Garry Parker as a centre mid, maybe we'd not have signed Bohinen, etc etc. Miss out on one thing and others things follow instead.

Others that Clough showed interest in:
Neeskens was mentioned which I didn't know but maybe Cruyff too in the 80s?

Laurent Blanc - at the time he'd have been partnering Des Walker - that seems a pretty good partnership to me!

    Alan Shearer

    Matt Le Tissier

One that were rumoured to be targets in the summer of 1995:
Dennis Bergkamp (I don't think it got to the Baggio stage, but maybe he'd even have been better suited to playing alongside Roy, and Baggio's form wasn't great in 95/96 either)

Mark Draper (as good as Bart-Williams turned out to be, I think Draper would have been a better signing at the time, alongside Bohinen as a kind of more progressive Phillips, or if/when necessary as Bohinen's replacement)

Someone who Cloughie made a big effort to sign during his early days at the CG was Kevin Hector. Despite Hector being keen on the move to happen, Derby, understandably, stood firm.

Also, IIRC, Cloughie made an effort to bring Johan Neeskens to the CG.

Didn't we also try to sign Ron Webster

Yes Phil, we did. I'd forgotten that one. IIRC it was a deal that collapsed at the last minute.

There were a couple of others who Cloughie was keen to bring to Forest during his early days but, for whatever reason, couldn't complete - Tommy Booth from Manchester City, Arnold Sidebottom (Ryan's dad) from Manchester United and Mick Bates from Leeds.

For players we loaned who had a massive impact and we didn't sign them, Huckerby in the season we lost to Sheffield in the playoffs.

    Him and Harewood were devastating.

    Another bit of Marthur genius.

    1m Norwich wanted for him

Yep, the Derby game midweek when we hammered them and Gregory got the sack after was fucking brilliant.

Robbie Blake mentioned in the opening post, and Hugo Porfirio the year we came down from the Prem.

Was over on trial, Clough said “no better than what we’ve got!”

Not saying whether he would have been a good buy or a bullet dodged, but that Jack Marriott seems to have been one we missed, for good or bad!

I didn't know about this one though!

I guess he meant Webb was just as good, or Parker if later! Or he'd just signed Sheridan and thought he was the Irish Valderrama?

Aye, bloody international breaks. The devil finds work for idle hands Thomas.

Mind you, if we ever get into the Prom-iership, combine these 'dead air time' breaks with team sheet meltdowns on any given night of the ruddy week and, forum-wise, we'll look back on these as "those halcyon days".
