No-one irritates me to the point of muting the TV. Problem is the lack of distinctive voices and vocabularies. How do you tell Guy Mowbray from Simon Brotherton? Can you recall a killer Sam Matterface line?

    Edit: Alan Green, complete arse.
I remember way back when in the early days of Sky TV you could get the radio on audio for commentary through satellite whilst watching the pictures of the footie channel.

Not aware that’s available these days, and like you say getting them in sync from the radio last I tried didn’t work. I guess they want you to consume their ‘product’, shite as it is with all these ex-players getting the job ahead of people that are good at it.

Not commentators, but the ex-players mates club on MOTD irritates me too. I just record it and fast forward past their inane drivel, maybe looking at ‘tactical analysis’ which people behind the scenes have probably put together for them anyway.

Got to have celebrities everywhere don’t we?

Barry D was absolutely the best. Motson used to be decent but went kind of senile at a certain point. Mike Ingham was magnificent on the radio.

I can't stand Tyldesly, or Mowbray, or Ian Darke, or Peter Drury (he obviously writes all his big lines beforehand and you can almost hear him practising them to himself before the game). Can just about deal with Mattaface or Fletcher in an inane sort of a way. Alan Green is an absolute arsehole and joy vaccuum, I don't think anyone likes him do they? Martin Tyler can also do one, he kind of did a Motty and basically became a parody of himself...

Not trying to be a sexist prick but Jacqui Oatley grinds my gears.

Pearce could make Leeds 3 Forest 7 and Villa 5 Forest 5 sound like paint drying.
I don't know what he is like physiologically, but I get a mental picture of him being obese, gresey black hair, lank at the sides and bald in patches on top.
Watching women play their version of football at the WWC was bad enough, but having Pearce do the voice over - it was never good enough to be called a commentary - meant the only way I could watch was to turn the sound off.

Agree with most about the greats. Sam Matterface on Talk Sport is very good.

I can’t stand Robbie “I’m richer than you” Savage or Mr Moan Alan Green. He could have made our 5-5 last season sound dull and boring.

Locally, Steve Hodge is a very good pundit. Brian Laws speaks in word salads.

It only takes a second to score a goal.

Clive Tyldsley is an absolute embarrassment. He clearly pre-prepares his terrible jokes and thinks he’s some sort of comedy icon.

He also tries desperately to be “down with the kids” which is even more cringe inducing.

A couple of years ago I was watching a game with Mario Balotelli playing and Tyldsley actually quoted a Drake rap to describe Balotelli.

A low point not just in Tyldsley’s career but football commentary in general.

I like Martin Tyler as a commentator but he has well and truly sold his soul to the shiny PL “brand”. That “and it’s live!!!!” shit he does before every game is embarrassing.

Alan Green is a cnut and Jonathan Pearce is a shit wanker who made his name by screaming and shouting like a 70s South American commentator on London radio. Ironic that he’s now a boring twat.

Pundits are the worst though. Lineker gets paid 1.75m quid a year to introduce the football highlights every Saturday in his smarmy manner and doesn’t even respect the BBC code if conduct enough to keep his shitty opinions about brexit, politics etc to himself on twitter. An absolute tosspot.

Then you’ve got Shearer, who pulls in 1m plus a year to describe exactly what my eyes are watching in a dreary monotone geordie accent.

Can’t pay for old folks tv licenses but they can piss money up the wall on these useless twats, who most people fast forward straight past anyway.

Just get some bloke off sky sports news or the radio to introduce the programme and then chuck a couple of pundits a few hundred quid a show to chat shit about it on a rota basis. Would save the license-payer millions and nobody would fucking care.

Agree Ravi. At least Hodgie sounds as though he's had some involvement in the modern game.

Basically this thread can be described with the following mathematical equation:

    Barry Davies > Everyone Else.

Even my wife (who isn’t a football fan) likes Barry Davies because of his splendid gymnastics commentary (her favourite sport).

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

Barry Davies is another one who's Mrs was a stewardess. In the old days we used to get a dedicated crew bus from terminal 3 to the crew car park and I've seen him several times on the bus with his family after their holidays.

The head of Sky Sports has a holiday home down the road from me, he drinks in Wirksworth and Ashbourne on a regular basis, so I've chatted with him on a regular basis. He reckons Sky have deliberately set out to Americanise the commentating to appeal to as big a global audience as possible as it's American TV that is consumed around the world the most.

That might be statistically true, but it makes the commentators and pundits sound like even bigger twats than the majority already are.

Ultimately Sky aren't looking to appease the fans of the "beautiful game" in the UK, they want to sell it to the world.

As ever, it all comes down to money!!

The nesum dorma football podcast did a cracking motty Vs Davies episode. Check it out on ACAST when you're stuck in traffic.

Watching womens football was tough enough, Jonathan Pearce just made it 10 times harder.

    Cringeworthy.

I think Jon Champion is the best commentator around. He is superb whoever he pairs up with (I remember the duo with Ally McCoist being particularly delightful during the Russia World Cup) and has a distinctive voice that isn't annoying.

The worst by far is Jonathon Pearce. The worst thing about him is he thinks he's so good at it and the BBC execs love him so put him on all the big games. His jabbering is embaressing and he just never shuts up. Almost all his commentary work is scripted and you can just tell he practices saying stupid shit in his bedroom the night before a match as prep, his wife must hate him.

Jonathan Pearce is insufferable; who thought he was a good idea? It makes me wonder if once football commentators are in the job, they are immune from getting sacked for being shit at it.

There are a few commentators I like from other sports, but I don't think there is a modern football commentator I like.

Barry Davies and Ken Wolstenholme are the all time greats.

Not my favourite commentator, but I like Jonathon Pearce. He seems a sound bloke. And I think he found his niche with women's football, he does it well.
