Quality post amigo. Interesting that Burke has made his debut at a similar age to Jenas, McGugan and Bastiens, players that have all gone on to a very good level

    Excellent work.

You could make a very decent squad out of that lot!

I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

Darlow, Lascelles, Dawson, Morgan, Prutton, Williams, Perch, Reid, Jenas, McGugan, Bamford, Osborn, Burke - That's 13 of 44 where we can pretty safely say they are good enough quality for this level. One in every 3.4 which is not a bad ratio.

That's before you look at those that still might - Evtimov, Grant... and those who showed real promise but didn't get deeloped for whatever reason, like Bopp, Thompson, Sinclair (Who scored 10 in 30 for P'boro in the championship, better than most of our recent strikers), Thornhill, Freeman...

Basically about half of those who step up can and should do well at this level. Of course they won't all do so. Injuries, club crises, attitude, lack of chances - there's plenty of banana skins for them. But it is heartening to see the quality up there, especially as the class of 2000 have had a career's worth of time to demonstrate their potential. There's at least five full internationals in that lot, I'm sure.

He's the youngest of the lot as well, admittedly only 10 days younger than Bastians was. I think Westcarr was still younger though.

Not enough youth given a chance in recent times. Great to see Burke come on Saturday. Hope Dougie gives one or two more a chance.

Another side with FFP is the amount of money sales reap too.
A big part of Southampton's model has been money they've recouped on the likes of Walcott and Shaw. Darlow, Lascelles, Reid and Dawson have recouped plenty of money too.

I watched Nial Rodney playing as a teammate with my son, the other week, he now devotes his time to his clothing business and plays amature football for his enjoyment, Greyhounders at Aslockton, incidentally the side are sponsored by Marlon Harwood, Bopp is a regular at their training sessions.

I didn't include a player like Josh Rees. Was never in our academy. Same could apply for the apprentices era. If I didn't include Josh Rees then should I include Steve Blathwerick, Richard Irving & Andy Marriott for example ?

Nigel Clough was at our academy so I will include him even though he went to a non league side for a bit. Roy Keane joined us so young he made appearances for the youth side so I think I will include him. But Garry Birtles only joined us at 20/21 so I won't include him.

Donny, brought back some memories with some of those names who never made it.

    * Stainwright was the first player to sign apprentice forms at the club. Hall , Bridgett & Hall above were youth players at the club but didn't sign apprentice forms.

The following players were the best known youth players before apprentice forms were signed at the club and played for our youth teams or made their professional debut with us after the war.

    Sammy 'Bob' Chapman - debut 18/1/64 17 years, 5 months, 0 days

    Geoff Thomas - debut 31/8/46 20 years, 6 months, 10 days

Like not including Josh Rees with the academy section.

There could be a few questionable one's in the apprentice era.

The 3 Irishmen O'Kane, O'Neil & Keane wouldn't have signed apprentice forms but did play for our youth side.

Blatheriwck (Notts County), Iriving (Man Utd), Marriott (Arsenal) weren't included as similar too Josh Rees.

Nigel Clough was a youth player at the club but played a bit of non-league football & came back to the club.

Famous non-league signigns from young like Jack Burkitt (Darlaston), Tommy Wilson (Cinderhill Colliery) Garry Birtles (Long Eaton), Peter Davenport (Cammell Laird), Gary Crosby (Grantham) & Ian Woan (Runcorn) not included & I am sure there are others like Tony Loughlan & Neil Lyne in the late 80's.

Good idea RedSox. Think teams along different themes is a good idea.

Think we can look at stats like appearances and goals too down the line.

Williams left on a tribunal fee didn't he? There's also the others like McGugan, who left and we didn't actually offer them a new contract.

Bobby Howe went to Swindon after us, and IIRC, Norm went to Fulham.
